Especially Thorfinn and his scars. The details on hands are all consistent

Nick

There are a lot of subtle details in the animation like when Einar steps and slides his foot across the ground to land a punch he's digging up bits of rock and dirt with his heel which I thought was cool. It's kind of amazing how well the animators are handling such complex character designs

Nick

moar pls

Emman Reed

Time and time again my hopes are gone... yeah that's about right.

That's a great point.

Wow that's a great reference and makes a lot of sense to come up now. Watching FMAB is largely what helped me define a lot of my beliefs about the nature of good and evil. It's also the 2nd reference I've gotten from the show today, the other being Scar on a YouTube video (I think)

Alex G

Different situation but this just instantly made me think of Father in FMAB. Hohenheim warned him in episode 62 (which took me forever to remember which episode he said this 😄) “Only through them (humans) can a philosophers stone be created, and only through a stone can a homunculus arise, but what does a homunculus produce? What do YOU create? Creation is all and you’ve done nothing but destroy. You may thing you have reached a perfect state of being but in truth all you’ve reached is a dead end!”

2x9 remains at the top of my all time favorite anime episodes. I still struggle to explain fully what the coming episodes mean to me, they are just brilliant.

Pater is a literal saint. I love that man.

CastSenpai

It IS evil. I think part of what makes evil evil is not necessarily the destructive nature, but the destruction for destructions sake. It's like, the universe did all this work and made all these sacrifices to create something complex and beautiful and you destroyed it and added... What exactly. More destruction

I think Thorfinn just feels like he did terrible things, but now doesn't want to be that person at all. So he's course correcting almost too hard the other way. If he judges people who do bad things and wants to harm them like Einar did, it feels to him like saying they can't change for the better in the future and are just bad, which would mean the same is true for him, and he really doesn't want that to be the case. The things he's done are way worse than anything they're doing, so he needs to believe everyone deserves a chance, because if they don't, neither does he. It's just a very extreme version of these feelings cause he's going through some stuff right now.

Next episode will change you as a person get ready

I remember reading this part in the manga and honestly felt sick when I realised what the retainers did to their wheat. I don’t call many things ‘evil’ but there is something about being with these two, caring about their relationship, caring about their freedom and futures, caring about wheat (OF ALL THINGS) and the process of creating life, seeing how much hard, honest work it goes into creating just a patch of land, seeing Einar’s joy and Thorfinn’s curiosity and spark back, and realising how easy it is to destroy it because of what exactly? Jealously? Just wanting to kick down so you can feel better about yourself? It’s soo heinous. Soo unnecessary. It’s sickening. Also that punch. Oh boy. It’s one of the few times that Yukimura did a full page spread. There’s a real sense of gravity to what Thorfinn has done. It was not the right thing to do. And Thorfinn instantly regretted it and tried to tell Einar to not continue what he has unfortunately started. Thorfinn played into the retainers hands. That retainer knew he just needed a good excuse to punish these slaves. He just didn’t predict how bloody hard one of them could punch… Sverkel is the absolute best. I still think about it years later after reading it his simple answer to Thorfinn’s question/ predicament. WORK. It’s soo simple and yet I constantly have to remind myself of it when I’m at my lowest. One thing at a time. Fill yourself up. Working on yourself is hard work but that’s how you climb out. You made an comment about Arnheid’s situation … When it comes to Arnheid as a slave I think it’s very important to remember the difference in facial expression while she has her morning chats with Einar (and Thorfinn) and her defeated expression while naked with Ketil. Her position now is really ‘acceptance’. She’s a man’s property, comfort therapist, and his sex slave. Sure her situation could be soo much worse, which is also true with Thorfinn and Einar as slaves, but it’s still awful. It is still being treated as property and not a person with their own will and desires. Just as Einar says “Even if they like you, you become bound to them. If they hate you this is how they treat you. What kind of lives are we living?”

I'm soooooooo hyped for next episodes reaction

Very much agree Alter! It actually works well as a precursor to 2x9 anyway. Plus Yukimura has a response to it that I have saved too!

Sacha

every time the episode ends and we're hit with 'time and time again my hope is gone' it makes me laugh because no matter how good things get during the episode just having that as the outro reminds u exactly what ur watching in case things felt too good LOL

Yukimura Twitter thread for 2x8 “Thank you for watching Vinland Saga episode 8 ‘An Empty Man’. I wondered what kind of person would bully a slave. “A person who is close to a slave but not a slave,” I thought. The strength of Einar’s life force is really expressed in his voice. Takeuchi’s voice is powerful and youthful. I read somewhere that in the early 11th century, slaves were being used less and less in Europe. Why was that? And ten years later, it was around the time when the ‘Last Judgement’ was approaching. Free the slaves and their good deeds bring them to Heaven. It seems there was also a slave liberation boom.” (if you remember in 1x10, with the backdrop of the broken Roman columns, Thorfinn and Askeladd were discussing this particular event ‘Last Judgement’ or as the Danes would call it Ragnarok. Panic basically went through Europe at the time because it was said that in 1033, the 1000 anniversary of Jesus’ crucifixion was set to be the end of the earth event. It was predicted in The Book of Revelation.)

Sacha

Ok thanks, I'll add it to episode 9

Alex G

I think it's a good addition in terms of context, and what's going on in Thorfinn's mind. I wouldn't say it's pivitol for plot purposes, but I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on how Thorfinn is processing his past, and what that means for him now and in the future.

Alter Nate

Just found it. Before I watch it, do you think it's worth adding to a video or just watching now?

Alex G

Excited to watch the reaction. Did you end up watching the 6.5 episode MAPPA released on YouTube? Amazing visuals that correlate to this episode.

Alter Nate

I'm probably going to change the schedule up next week but for now, I'm going to be posting the first episode of JJK tomorrow
