One thing I like about that last sequence is that Oikawa puts everything on the line to get the ball and crashes into the sidelines...just like Hinata does in Ep 1 of the first season.

Joshius

Oh yeah it was him! Watching that speech I immediately thought of Haikyuu

Alex G

Also so glad you've finally joined the Oikawa fan club now that he's no longer a threat!

Dana

God the two minutes of the last rally between when Oikawa points to Iwaizumi and the end of the game are some of my favorite two minutes in anime, period. This scene and another one to come are the ones that, in my opinion, cement Haikyu as the best sports anime I've ever watched. Kuroko's Basketball comes in at a close second but would be a good followup to this show.

Perfect episode love it so much, there is this manga and anime blue period in which they talk little about talent and this girl says that she hates that word because it is not talent it is effort and a lot of work, talent is nice and all but effort is what is most important.

Iwa-chan's digs were so good

Taking out Noya is never a choice. He switches out with Hinata when he gets rotated to the front. After Tsukki serves and the other team gets a point Noya comes back in to replace Tsukki. That is why it will be their weakest defensive rotation, because Noya isn't in and Tsukki is in the back row.

Athena

lol I hate to break it to you, but every time a pinch server comes in (aka Yamaguchi) you'll always have that feeling of anxiety because it's in the name! They come in at a pinch so tensions are gonna be high!

I wanna put some insight into Oikawa as a character. He's definitely built up to put Oikawa on this pedestal but I think what they're trying to say is that some people like the geniuses and the monsters are able to grow and become so strong so much quicker because of higher natural talent. Oikawa is a strong player but because he's put so much time and effort. He's a 3rd year and Kageyama is a first year yet in a single year Kageyama was able to surpass him. As someone who does a lot of different things and can't seem to become fully talented or amazing at the things I'm "good" at his character really resonates with me. I really like the words of his old coach saying "you can complain once you've actually done everything you can do." This is not to say that the geniuses don't work as hard as Oikawa does, but more so that they were able to make their talent bloom earlier than he could. Love this show so much

Also to your point about the term "innate talent/genius", like you said, it's such a broad word that can be interpreted in different ways, in different contexts. In a way Oikawa is a genius compared to someone else, in his own right, with the way he's so perceptive and clever in game strategy. But also, that talent might have stemmed from his incessant hardwork through his middle school and high school years, keeping in mind that he's built up this reputation because he's also had a two year lead being Kageyama's senior. You can't really tell where talent stops and hard work begins. I guess the mangaka considers Kageyama a genius more so than Oikawa, since the talent that Oikawa has struggled to build over these three years of high school through hard work, Kageyama has almost already caught up to it in his first year through his own hard work(without a doubt) but also his innate talent of (in his case) spacial awareness and insane adaptability, almost like his mind is tuned differently. (Side note- The environment Kageyama is in could also factor in to his exponential growth, what with great senpais and a leader like Daichi, and an overly supportive and passionate comrade in Hinata who always pushes him to do his best. People are always dealt different hands, be it fair or unfair, that is beyond control) What Oikawa can do, Kageyama can also do, but what Kageyama can do, Oikawa cannot. Some people are born with minds tuned to numbers unlike anyone else, where they can compute calculations in seconds like it's second nature. Some people have bodies built differently that help them physically overperform than others. Obviously this isn't to take anything away from them as they can only hone and properly use this innate ability if they put in the hardwork, but there are many people with innate abilities that others can't ever achieve in their lifetime. Acknowledging that talent, but also realising that no one is unbeatable as long as you put in the work, explore all your avenues, push your limits and discover your maximum capacity, then fight smart is what the mystery man was trying to convey to Oikawa, is my interpretation. As Oikawa quoted- Talent is something YOU make bloom(be it innate or acquired) and instinct is something you polish(and keep polishing). Sorry for the jumbled mess that this is. Hope it made a little sense.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is the player, and it was a great speech. 😀 110% on how insight from literally anything can be of value to everything. And absolutely, just like Jason said, Oikawa's last line is great, and has really been taken up widely in sports and coaching in Japan. Talent isn't something you're just given; it's something you make for yourself. Instinct isn't just something you're born with; it's something you cultivate through focused intention. Honestly my favorite part of the whole last rally though is Asahi's back row spike. He goes from not even having the nerve to jump serve to going for a wildly risky play and having it pay off. Asahi's growth doesn't get the same spotlight, in part because he's in a role where he's expected to pull off stuff like that, but it's great that he grows into that role.

Also you would be happy to know that the theme of ‘talent’ and ‘genuis’ is nowhere near over. Furudate constantly comes back to it and reevaluates it throughout the entire story. It’s honestly one of my favourite parts of Haikyuu.

Sacha

“A volleyball team with six strong players is stronger” All 12 of the players on the court touched the ball at least once in that last rally. Everyone played to their current limits and no one should be ashamed at what they achieved in this game. Maybe I’m just in a really emotional mood since I’ve just come from watching a reaction to the latest Vinland Saga episode but here I am crying again even though I have watched this episode an obscene amount of times. Tbh I would have probably cried anyway. But that last rally and the final moment is just sheer anime perfection. I know it’s really easy to just root for the Karasuno boys on people’s first watch through (I get it) but they really do miss out on the true magic that is Haikyuu.

Sacha

this episode just has everything. I'm happy that you are hyped for episode 25, you definitely need to check out the aoba johsai ending from the movie. It's about 5min and you can watch it on yt.

Tylo

"Talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish." Line always gets me... one of the many great lines in the show tbh

Jason Serrano

You've probably already watched it, but just in case here's another annoying reminder for you to not miss the 6 min extra clip after next episode!! "Talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish" "Rather than despairing and giving up because you're not a genius, believe that your strength is not limited to this, and continue on the path straight ahead of you." So many great quotes and moments in this episode. And the theme of talent versus hardwork explored. I think that second quote was such great advice to Oikawa who was probably experiencing a slump. And that last stretch, I think everyone got to touch the ball at least once to save it, the epitome of teamwork and passion. Also the beauty of scoring the last point by doing the exact same back quick attack, from the same position, same shot. And yes, Tanaka our unsung hero!! This was such an epic game, and I'll miss Aoba Josai dearly!! But now you can drink the extra powerful tears of Aoba Josai and sexy stupid Oikawa and add their power to your arsenal to boost our Karasuno boys in the next round. Edit- also Iwaizumi's underrated receives this episode, so good. And Oikawa's super long set!!
