Haikyuu!! 2x7 Reaction Extended (YT link below)
Added 2023-03-05 00:06:07 +0000 UTCIn Haikyuu 2x7, Tsukki: Origins, a series of refreshing hill-sprints give the team time to reflect on the bizarre fact that Tsukki is the only one not willing to commit to 24-7-365 Volleyball practice sessions.

2023-03-05 04:01:56 +0000 UTCGlad pople find it interesting. I should say, though, that the idea of 'haragei' doesn't derive from the grammar; that was just my example to try to explain how it works. Haragei has its roots in 1500s Zen Buddhism and the samurai code with philosophers like Sen no Rikyu, but omission as a grammatical feature (what fancy linguists call "topic-drop") existed many hundreds of years before that. Sen no Rikyu is the guy who codified the tea ceremony where the entire thing from start to finish is conducted in complete silence, and everything is communicated in symbols, gesture, and non-verbal communication. That's where "haragei" is talked about most frequently.

2023-03-05 03:18:47 +0000 UTCCoach Nekomata compares Karasuno with their mascot and says that crows are omnivorous, they eat everything there is to eat, and take advantage of the strong in order to survive. Just like the essence of volleyball, whoever fails to adapt will lose. I'll comment again later on when we see more but I just love how the main characters of this show are the epitome of what volleyball is supposed to be, adaptation. Also obligatory, "I love Tsukki!" and "He's my favorite!" lol

2023-03-05 02:31:01 +0000 UTCAh! Forgot. Noya's shirt (for completion) at 13:38: 切磋琢磨, sessa takuma, "polishing / improving something by grinding off the rough edges" is what it literally means, but in modern day usage, it means "teammates improving each other through rivalry / constructive criticism / butting up against each other"

2023-03-05 02:15:45 +0000 UTCThank you for the laughs at 20:20, haha. So refreshing. "Aaaahhh" 13:04 is a pretty famous line from Tsukki. In English, they call it "just a club," but there are lots of ways to say "just X," and the way Tsukki says it is really rare / unusual. He says 高が部活 (taka-ga bukatsu). Bukatsu is "club," but then the "taka-ga" means like, "at most / at its highest." Anyway, no one else talks like that, haha. If, say, Yamaguchi wanted to say something like "just a club," it'd probably be more like "tada-no bukatsu" or "bukatsu dake da shi." The way Tsukki says it sounds like it comes from many generations ago. The whole "telepathic communication" trope at 19:25 is something that actually has a name in Japanese. It's called 腹芸 'haragei.' It kinda seems silly as I'm writing this out now, but it literally translates to "the art of the gut," haha. Anyway, the idea is that most communication in general is non-verbal, and as we become closer to each other and more expert at whatever field we're in, then we become better able to communicate successfully without having to make everything explicit in words. In Japanese (much like in Korean), you can drop the subject, the object, or really any part of the sentence as long as it's understood; the logical extreme and ideal end-point in all of this is to get to where words are no longer necessary at all. Often in Japanese media (live action and animated), you'll see this idea of 'haragei' expressed with everyone looking at each other, pausing, then nodding in unison before committing to some action. The point is that it's not meant to be completely superhuman, but rather something that Hinata *should* pick up on given how dedicated both he and Asahi are, and how close they've come through the intense practices. For Chris or others interested, this was a great episode for Japanese onomatopoeia if you want to learn them in context, haha. - 4:00 'gangan' (Ukai saying keep going at it with abandon) - 10:12 two in a row from Bokuto: 'ude ga *pokkiri* oresou de shinpai ni naru. motto *gatto* tomenai to. *gatto*.' (Tsukki's arms look like they're going to snap like "pokkiri." You have to try to block like "gatto." "gatto") - 18:45: Ukai says, if only Tsukki could become a dependable blocker, then the whole teams level would go up a whole bunch (like "gutto") - 20:43 'zawazawa' (Tsukki is prickly / chilly)
