I think the show being about "connections and bonds between people" is spot on. It's largely Rei's journey for sure, but more broadly, it's about how the company and care of others can ultimately enrich the lives of everyone involved. His time with the Kawamoto sisters is definitely healing for Rei, but what I think he doesn't realize is that him being there is healing for them too. Rei sees their kindness as a nicety, as just neighbors being friendly, failing to understand that his company is already providing them something of value. I think part of the reason Rei often fails to understand Akari and Hina isn't just because they're women, but because he can't understand how they are so giving towards other people. He can't understand why Hina is crying because in his mind, what she did is already amazing, and more brave than anything he thinks he could have done. He also can't understand why Akari and Hina would want him around when he feels he has nothing to give back to them. The feeling of being wanted for nothing in return is so foreign that it confuses him. He can't fathom that just his presence is enough, so he ends up feeling like a burden instead. Even in spite of his obvious kindness, like when he stops Hina from throwing out her bento, he feels this way. And that's probably the saddest part: he can't see how much he also has to give. It's super obvious that both Akari and Hina are intense caregivers, and as someone who also tends to be that way, I like to think of it like this: the worst thing you can do to someone who wants to care for you is to deny them that ability. To deny that you are worth being cared for.

@Sacha yeah I suspect that I will enjoy season 1 just as much as season 2 because of how in love with the series I already am

So in case you missed it: The sweets the butler brought by actually were from the shop owned by the grandpa of the girls.

I remember when I watched the first 10 episodes from season 1 I said to myself “this will be the easiest 10/10 I’ll ever give”… and oh boy was I right. Personally for me I love both season 1 and 2 (I have a particular soft spot for season 1 though) but I can totally understand why season 2 is higher rated.

Sacha

well ive already "wow"-ed times a thousand so far and im 10 episodes into s1 so, not that its a competition or anything

Just here to second the opinion that season 2 is even better. Multiple episodes made me audibly go “wow” to myself while watching them and that almost never happens. Can’t wait until the reaction reaches that point.

hina’s springtime of youth has arrived, its so wholesome seeing her want to cook a bento for the boy she likes, very innocent. its also great to watch rei build this support system with all the sisters, its so blatantly apparent that being with this family is the best place for rei and frankly for any human being. looks like theres some growth there as well with him buying some items for his apartment after leaving akari’s. speaking of akari, of course she knocks it out of the park being an incredible big sister for hina, instantly jumping to comfort and console her after she failed too deliver her bento. all of this fun wholesome stuff put aside… wtf was going on in that brief black and white rei flashback when he was observing hina’s love on her face while looking at her baseball player crush… that was the girl from the beginning of the show who said that rei has no place to belong too… but like, why was she pinning him onto a bed and taking his glasses off… right after we are looking at a scene about hina’s love for this boy… if this show is going down the sexual violence route i pray its handled with the same level of maturity and quality everything else in this show has been so far. when you combine the flashback of rei passing out drunk on the street with this weird “love” flashback, and the fact he is only 17 years old, this dudes gotta have an insane backstory we’ve barely uncovered so far.

ive only watched 10 episodes of march comes in like a lion so far, but i gotta thank everyone who intensely advocated for this show to be watched by goodwin and thank you goodwin for choosing it. honestly i never watched this show up until this point because i had judged, based off the poster alone, that i wouldnt like the art style of the series and decided to watch dozens of other slice of life anime saying that “ill get to march eventually” while starting a different series everytime. I was so stupid its unreal, this is one of the best animation styles i have ever seen, its breathtaking. so far, this series has been perfect. If it keeps this up, and there has not been a single reason to think it wont, this will end up being one of my all time fav pieces of art ever made. It feels amazing to be watching something truly special thats new to me again, its been a while. everything about this works, from the family of three sisters all being unique and so fun to be around, the best friend being hilarious and also loveable, the OST is just… the best, a lot of the stuff with rei is really hitting way to close to home and his internal monologues are simply incredible. the quality of the writing and the type of themes this show is exploring, but specifically how deep they are going into it and how well the production (music and animation) coincide with the lessons/perspectives being displayed, thats what makes this show so special. apparently, season two is on a whole different level from this season, which im not even going to try and comprehend with my brain, just gonna wait until i get to season two and see why people say that and why it has such a higher score than season one does on mal. because right now i fail to see anything this show could possibly be doing better up to this point. i love this show more than i love myself, and im not even halfway through s1 yet
