The two guys who failed to get a cultural festival date in the 2nd skit are Miyuki's friends from the karaoke episode. They are also going through their own struggles in love. If nothing changes, Kashiwagi (stay at Shuchiin), Tsubasa (med school in another uni), and Maki (going to another uni) are set to go their separate ways after high school. This is the same for Miyuki (abroad), Kaguya (Shuchiin), and Chika (another uni). The countdown to separation has begun. Time is running out. This element of time has been hinted at in the OP for this season.

In contrast, the TOEFL is specifically for studying abroad, and it's an annual news story that Japanese average scores are lower than students in Korea, China, and the rest of Asia. Also random, but I used to work for ETS (the giant, evil corporation that makes the TOEFL, SAT, GRE, LSAT, etc.), making questions for the TOEFL. I think the modern test design is actually pretty well done ... but obviously that doesn't take away from the fact that it's used to terrorize people into 100s of hours of "test prep" that take away from their general enjoyment of life.

2022-07-31 05:38:08 +0000 UTCIn S2, Shirogane holds a book labelled "TOEFL" ( https://imgur.com/9VwksjD ) TOEFL is "a standardised test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enrol in English-speaking universities" The only reason anyone would ever read this book would be if they were interested in studying abroad. Incredible piece of foreshadowing that is incredibly subtle and 100% intentional.

I really enjoy how both Maki’s warning from the end of last episode about not ending up like her because of waiting for too long to confess and Miyuki trying to convince Haysaka to be her true self have combined to push Shirogane over the edge to finally start walking the walk. Great writing.
