Don't get me started man. When I read this chapter I enjoyed it perfectly fine, it felt like the natural progression of the story. Then I found out everyone thought it was cringe or whatever. So now this second time around watching it, I looked for the cringe as hard as I could. Lo and behold, there was no cringe to be found. Of course they would team up! What else would Reiner, Annie, Pieck and McGath do in the story other than team up with the scouts? Anything else just doesn't make sense to me.

yusuf is down bad

benj

Yes. Isayama def was going for an Avengers Assemble moment there at the end, and I’m all for it. The majority of manga readers seriously HATE that scene and they hate the teamup, I am not kidding. Crazy right?

benj

Did you get a haircut recently? You look cuter and handsomer all of a sudden. hmmmmmm

Yusuf

Are you kidding me? I love how they focus on the characters, a group of Marleyans and Islanders, and have them work together in the most depressing and grim circumstances. Idk what show people are watching if they call this cringevengers lmao. Now that you mention it, that shot did look like the one where they’re all standing over Loki in the first Avengers movie.

iaani

This is the reaction I required. Thank you for the weekly vindication with this show Alex, it gets tiring with the majority of the AoT fandom literally being IRL Floch’s. Can you believe people’s reaction to the ending of this episode isn’t excitement like how you reacted? People call the teamup the “Cringevengers” Unironically…its actually insane. I’ve never felt such a disconnect with a fanbase before.

benj

I'm so ready for next episode. The last three episodes adapt each one a chapter of manga. (I didn't check the rest). And the next manga chapter is one of my favorites

Who tf eats pie with their hands. Marley was right after all, Eldians are savages.

"Things have just been going really great for Hange. Her leadership really brought everyone together, there was no division or infighting among the military under her leadership. Not a single one of her comrades or friends died or turned into Titans or got exploded. No major disasters happened," "Oh, it's time for the broadcast," "I'm gonna call the mid-card: wheelbarrow mid-card!" "Power emanating from Hange," (My favorite character for SURE) "I don't know how you sleep with all this noise. The noise of the Colossal Titans, and the guilt in your own heart," "I promise, we're almost to Disneyland," "Think on your shoulder pats and reflect. Repent," "You ever seen a Chicken-Leg Titan? Get in. GET IN," "That was one way to appeal to the heart. The most dramatic and epic way possible. And then they hugged it out, on the ground," "She's just been sitting on this roof, saying 'Okaeri' to everyone," "There's no freedom like annihilating the rest of the world," "Things did not work out for Yelena," "A lot of hygiene talk in this episode," "People who are not going to slip into just intentional blindness to the evils of the world," "As long as you're alive, you can anticipate a future," "We have sacrificed for our present selves,"

I love when people actually try to understand Floch past just 'fuck this guy!' Even villains have reasons as to why they're acting a certain way, and that can be so interesting to dive in to and try to understand. I agree with you about him, but I have a compounding reason as to why his emotions have spiraled so far out of control: survivor's guilt. I think Floch, ever since he sat up in that field of bodies, has been desperately looking for a reason why he, out of all people, survived. He even mentions it briefly in his desperation while he's arguing to bring back Erwin. It's not just because he believed they needed a person like Erwin, but saving him and getting him to Levi and the injection was what he perceived as his reason for surviving. But that was taken from him, so he was left to search for another. To be a part of something huge that would justify his miraculous luck that day. Thus, he was easily pulled in by this grand cause, and even further invested by Eren 'confiding' in him and making him a part of this secret annihilation plot. From there, he's become so engrossed and proud of his role, that his mind seems to have slipped too far to go back now. Then, pair that with Erwin's plan... Not blaspheming his good name or anything, but the only time Floch saw him, he sacrificed his and the life of the recruits in order to achieve victory. It would be incredibly easy for Floch to internalize this solitary element, and be fully convinced that the end they're striving for is worth the means. Perhaps this helps him disassociate from his immoral actions, justifying it all in advance as a necessary evil. Condemning himself to be a kind of devil, alongside Eren, because he believes that's what they've always needed, and why he was spared.

I don't get how people can unironically think Erin does nothing wrong, i get thinking he's right about needing to attack even if i disagree but c'mon he's done some awful stuff

ErrantSara

The Eren stans hate this alliance so much they call them Cringevengers.

ArmdVctr

I see your point about Eren, however I think it's more complicated than he is doing this "just" to bring everyone together. There's a very clear precedent already that he has no issue demonizing and destroying people he perceives as enemies or oppressors. I mean, he's been contemplating killing everyone across the sea since the end of S3. So while that may be a part of his goal, I think the driving force is his selfish desire to right the injustices done to him and make sure no one ever threatens his "freedom" ever again.

Steve.

I'll never forget that shot of him standing by the bonfire of bones as he came to peace with his resolve and purpose The lighting in this episodes scene was reminiscent of that too with the steam/heat from the colossal titans as well as the sunset

Nick

Reiner has been done with everything except for Gabi and Falco since the end of season 3 haha

Nick

Analysis of Floch in this video was on point in my opinion

Nick

i'm gonna share my prediction for Floch, i have not read the manga so this is just my prediction. 1) death by Erin, thinking he means anything to Erin he'll try talk to him or try defend him and just get caught up and killed by Erin 2) revolution, a split in the Jaegerists will make him the "new old" they rebel against, (perhaps from a belief he worked with Jean?) and he will be killed or held prisoner just like he has done for those not loyal to him

ErrantSara

Yeah I really liked the laugh as well. I think I wanted to go back to normalcy too as a Connie fan. That moment was reminiscent of the old days

Alex G

That's such a great point about Mikasa and the scarf. It adds so much to it now, thinking about the moment where she asks for the scarf back while struggling with the implications of it all.

Alex G

Free for a bit at least. We don't need to ask any questions, especially with all this pie just sitting around waiting to be eaten...

Alex G

Armin was ready to lay it all on the line. Lest we forget the episode "Hero" when he sacrificed his life already to defeat Bertholdt. I remember back then Eren saying Armin is going to save the world, and it's looking more and more like that'll be the case here. There was absolutely no way Jean was ever going to take a cushy life ever since Marco's death. That was really the pivotal moment. And it might've never been possible for him if Marco wasn't such a nice person who recognized Jean's strengths. I think it's a testament to how much of an impact you can have on others even if you don't do something amazingly impressive yourself. I honestly feel like Eren is becoming a supervillain on purpose just to bring everyone else together. Like that's gotta be his big plan.

Kotryna

Noticed Armin looking a lot like Erwin in this episode, his new haircut after the timeskip in general makes him resemble the commander a lot more and I really love that. His action of trying to sacrifice himself to save Falco and Connie is exactly what Erwin would have done. Make a gamble. This episode proved to me, at least, that Armin can stack up to the commander and has always been capable of it.

Nick

A moment that I feel is underrated is Connie laughing at Annie. It seemingly feels weird because this was a former enemy, but she was also a former comrade. He cried with Sasha when they thought they killed Reiner in Season 3 and had a very hard time acknowledging that Reiner was the Armored Titan. I think a part of him wants to go back to how things once were. That laugh is something that is just so much like Connie, because, at his core, he is a very pure person. I also find it kind of hilarious that Reiner just slept through this whole thing, and it isn’t even the first time. Can’t blame the guy though.

Chris Sharpe

Lots of great character moments this episode! Like you said, I loved that Hange and Levi were the first ones to basically offer the olive branch and make steps towards a coalition to stop Eren. For Connie's part, I really liked that whole mini-arc. It didn't drag on too long since there are bigger things to worry about than child endangerment, but it really encapsulated the bigger conflict well in so many ways. Armin's approach was great for all the reasons you said — although I do think there was a part of him that selfishly wouldn't have been mad if he did die there. I hope he's got that self-doubt out of his system, because the Survey Corps/ Warriors/Avengers/whatever-their-name-is are going to need him. Jean has that same sort of internal conflict as well, but he's a bit more sure of who he is and knows that that isn't the kind of person he's become. I think it also makes sense that, as much as we'd love to see it, he did *not* shoot Floch or even let him get stomped by Pieck. He understands the fear, he understands the temptation, and while it's not for him, he's not ready to condemn those who feel it. Like Marco told him: "You're not a good leader because you're strong, but because you understand how it feels to be weak." Then Mikasa has an interesting moment with Louise. A lot of people say she was just mean and rude to Louise here, but I think more so she's feeling a lot of guilt/shame about the whole situation and recognizes she can't do anything. Here's this little girl basically saying "I'm about to die because of how much I idolized you, isn't that great?" And Mikasa of course wants to say No, I never wanted any of this, but she knows better than anyone that it won't get through to her. Louise is her future if she doesn't get rid of that scarf, and how can Mikasa say anything to Louise when she's not able to do that yet? I feel like that scene threw back into her face something that Mikasa had thought a little bit about in the OVA. Ultimately, she cannot keep following Eren through hell, and the time is coming soon where she's going to have to make that decision.

LEVI OMG HE LOST FINGERS BUT AT LEAST HE'S STILL ALIVE SO THAT'S GOOD I GUESS O.O LMAO I need Mappa to chill with these faces omg XD oh my god connie, armin holy shit ....idk i don't think ur free floch...cuz like...where all those titans gonna go? wont they just come back? can they even turn back into humans??? Too bad he didn't take enough time to think about a proper ending while he was getting his teeth cleaned.

L.C.

its comfy? he needs to be able to hear what's around him?

Brimmy

i feel like isayama must have gone to the dentist right before writing this chapter or something.

Lofi Tech

I don't know if you've answered this in a Q&A, but why do you wear your headphones like that on one ear?

Jupiterninja

7:09 Alex: "Yep, i don't know how you sleep with all this noise. The noise of the colossal titans and the guilt in your own heart." Reiner: sleeping peacefully since 2 episodes ago

Kei

I think that ties back to a conversation Eren and Pixis had way back in the beginning where Pixis suggests that perhaps mankind needs an enemy in order to be united.

Alex G

The end of this episode was amazing! I feel like in a weird way we owe this reunion to Eren, for being the villain that forces the two sides to drop their useless war against each other and unite against this much bigger evil. They were all victims of this chain of events, of the violence that bred more violence, including Eren. It feels like a return to the beginning of this show when things were so much simpler and the characters had conviction that they were doing the right thing. Then they all became aware of the strings that controlled them and the way they were just following the path set out before them. A path that only led to more death and violence. It seems that Eren becoming this villain freed them in a different way than he intended. I’m reminded of the way Bertholdt, Reiner and Annie accepted that regardless of the friendships they formed, they were slaves to the path and couldn’t choose any differently. Now, because of Eren, they can choose differently, and they have.

raine

When Jean said “those ashy bones would never forgive me” at the end of the episode, he was referring to Marco, since he was cremated back in season 1 and that was when Jean decided to join the Servey Corps instead of the interior.
