Holy shit the "Hook" reference when all of the firelights started cheering. I nearly lost my marbles! Can't say that I've ever seen anyone else make a reference to that movie outside of my family!

TheManatee

I’m late to the party, but I’m surprised you never talked about the romantic connection between Caitlyn and Vi! As a queer woman I get really excited whenever there is that representation in media. Your commentary on relationship dynamics is always very insightful and you usually pick up on these things, so I’m curious if you didn’t think it was worth touching on or if you just didn’t pick up on it.

raine

So uhhhh, i hit a wrong button halfway through typing up the quote comp and....it all went away. Here is what I have/ remember. It is tiny. I am sorry. Also, since I'm going off a lot of memory, it's all pretty out of order. Maybe I'll edit it later, but I'm still playing catch up, so I probably won't lol "Being poor doesn't earn you moral points, just like being rich doesn't earn you moral points," "Blame is responsibility's unproductive cousin," "Ugh, Sevika. We hate Sevika," (Part 5? I think?) "Pish-posh," "I knew the wine would get it," "Now we can show those snooty rich. FINALLY," The entire decapitation fakeout "Focus more on Clagger than on Milo," "Pish-posh," "I guess blood is NOT thicker than sludge water. OH WHAT. Blood IS thicker than sludge water," "It's too late for Sky, though, isn't it? She lives on in embarrassing letters," Various funny comments about the Power of Chairs "Everyone's a gangster until Parliament gets hit with a Shark Laser," "You know who I blame for this? Vi," As I lost the majority of this, if I missed any good ones, comment maybe??

Geneva The Weeba

Let’s be real. We all had our buttholes clenched as a clam during that scene.

T-mo

I also think its a throwback to the Get Jinxed video. In which she does that.

LockeKappa

Well dang. I really love this analogy 🤣

LudicrouslyLuke

LMFAOOO your reaction to the Caitlyn decapitation fakeout was priceless.

benj

I think she was just trying to bring the person she was back by trying to make her remember who she was before so yea it wasn’t the right thing to do but like you said vi had good intentions

Amber

i hated when vi started screaming names at jinx and telling her to picture them. i understand her intentions were good but jinx had a very different perception of these people than vi. they appear to her as overwhelming monsters and make it impossible for her to think clearly

Lulu

Also my theory with the airship and Powder saying “one day I’m gonna ride one one of those” is a subversion of expectations. Because right after that, Milo says “And one day, I’m gonna shoot one of them down”. Which is what I expect Powder (now Jinx) is going to end up doing

Rudy Strother

I think what makes Silco such a great villain for me is how vulnerable he actually is. When we first mee him he seems like an overly confident dude. Then for a brief moment in episode 3 we see him scared for a moment when Vander chokes him and he’s reminded that Vander is this physically opposing force who almost drowned him. And little moments like this appear from time to time. But this episode has my favorite, when he is clearly terrified that Sevika might actually kill him, and he’s not sure until the final moment and he’s breathing heavily. Idk how to explain it but it’s cool to see the “mastermind” villain have occasional moments of weakness

Rudy Strother

If you ever have a spare 30 minutes, I highly recommend you checkout the YouTube video “ Silco and Jinx — Therapist Reacts”. I think it’s been recommended to you once or twice. Just keep in mind it’s made from someone who professionally deals with human relationships and I’m curious if it changes (or at least adds insight) to your opinion on the Silco/Jinx relationship. I think it’s a fascinating watch even if it doesn’t change any of your thoughts

Rudy Strother

I've been hearing great things about the show and recommendations that it would be especially meaningful to me. I can't wait to watch it someday

Alex G

Yeah as I think I mentioned that is one of the elements I'm most excited about as well! I liked Ekko a lot despite limited screentime and I like Heimdingers escape from ignorance or what have you

Alex G

I think this episode filled in a lot of what I was missing from him for me

Alex G

That's a great point about Caitlyn being that potential force for Vi. I think one thing that mitigates what I said to some degree is for some reason I thought reason 1 would have a more definitive wrap up. But as this is clearly a cliffhanger for season 2, there's so much room left to run with to develop the characters in sorts of ways :)

Alex G

Didn't want to throw my hat into this but since you brought it up, just wanna say Silco being a ruthless son of a bitch is one thing, but him being a groomer would be another level entirely. Gotta give the man SOME credit.

secretsecret

Thank you Goodwin for such thoughtful and beautifully worded reactions to this show! Im afraid I cant stick around on patreon but I would regret not letting you know how much I enjoyed your analyzations of the characters and plot, cheers! :)

Ritoo

"You'll be with her a day before she realizes you aren't that girl anymore." To be honest, I feel like Silco is right here. Throughout the show, its been shown that Vi is stuck on saving Powder and she refuses to accept that Powder has turned into Jinx and there is no going back.

Angel Hernandez

An example of this is Gus from breaking bad, kills workers just cause, kills children, drug empire etc, but nothing sexual with children.

Wheeler

I was so happy when you said you were going to watch this show! You know a show is good when your appreciation of it and understanding gets deeper and deeper every rewatch, which was especially so with this experience. This was an incredible journey!

Chris Sharpe

Woah great point!

Megan

It’s ironic that Silco ended up becoming very similar to Vander in terms of his struggles, things that an earlier Silco would have scoffed at. They were unable to keep their ranks together due to dissent, tried protecting their daughters, and their daughters ended up becoming their downfall. Silco scoffed at Vander’s weakness of family and his seeming incompetence, but ended up being served the same plate for his troubles.

Chris Sharpe

Attack on Titan is like a burger. Not a McDonalds Burger, but an angus grilled burger, with American cheese, onions, bacon, and curly fries on the side: It has tons of different flavors, is extremely filling, a great meal for when you are very hungry, and will keep you content for a long time. Arcane is like a filet mignon: It’s small, but extremely rich and full of flavor. There isn’t a gram of fat on it, and every bite is perfect. Extremely delectable and will leave you wanting more. Also very expensive.

Chris Sharpe

After thinking about this a bit. I also when I first watched this show saw all of those small odd things of Jinx and Silco. I just think I did not and still dont see it that way, I think Jinx is still mentally very young and does not see these littler personal boundary things for one. But further more I see Silco as someone who is vengeful and power hungry, and I dont really see how he gains anything like that through being with Jinx that way. I also think it is very true that lots of people draw the line at children like that, for instance, in a lot of cases people who go to prison for anything involving hurting innocent children and especially anything sexual, a lot of times get attacked by other people who have murdered, drug dealt, etc because of the morality of it I suppose.

Wheeler

It's a kinder reiteration of what Ekko said a couple episodes prior: "You still block with your face." I find that criticism representative of the same brute force fighting method Vi has that you touched on, where she looks for the shortest and most direct route through any fight. Why take the time to guard when you could be landing another hit? And what changes the tide of that fight following Vander's advice is that for the first time using the gauntlets, Vi finally DOES block, and by doing so discovers their shielding function that had been there the whole time, under her nose but undiscovered until that moment. I'm very curious about what this might mean for her character and her approach to conflict going forward, it could potentially mean being more deliberate and thoughtful, or perhaps more defensive and reactive. It could go either way.

Marin Kirk

The interesting thing about the imaginary Vander pep talk I think is actually the very first thing he says: "Well, your guard needs work."

Marin Kirk

That's just glass half empty, it's a meaningless statement. You could just as easily say war is a hiccup between peacetimes, which is logically equivalent but at least focuses on peace as a goal or standard rather than an interruption. Edit: Maybe not "meaningless", but "needlessly pessimistic/defeatist" is more what I was going for. There are more helpful and productive ways of framing the same trends.

Xylen

Arcane was one of the bigges and better surprises i had in shows last year, before watching it i was like "a league of legends series? no thanks" then "people are talking about this show with high praise, it must be lol fans but at least i'll give it a go" then after watching it i'm the one recommending it to everybody... On another note, now that you finished one of my favorite shows of all time, i'll insist in recommending you one that i also like a lot and having watched your reactions since midnight gospel i honestly think that you would love: Assasination Classroom. Despite it's "violent" name, it's (mostly) a lighthearthed show (with deep moments) all about the mentor students relationship. It's a story where the teacher is the protagonist and it's a great story (despite the wired openings but maybe you like them xD)

Rodrigo Torres

I'm really glad you liked this show, and I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on Vi's character in this episode. There's a lot of cool characters in this show, and I basically all of them have depth, which is awesome. Highlights of this reaction is definitely the platter scene! It's even lampshaded a bit by Jinx's line after it, haha.

jdthebud

Yeah the whole we hate Sevika joke aside she is actually one of the more under rated characters in this show. She's there making her presence known in episode one and has been directly influencing the plot ever since.

benj

I'm a little sad we didn't see more of Heimerdinger joining up with Ekko and the Firelights, but it just means I'm excited to see more of that in season 2. Probably one of the dangling story threads I'm most looking forward to. It's a real beacon of hope after those final seconds.

Xylen

lol if I were vi I'd be kind of pissed toward the end there, haha. like you brought me here, tied me up, gave silco a gun, who tried to shoot me, then you SAVED me, and I have to be the one to pay for that?? lolol. vi just can't win

Jay Aniakor

Other than Jinx, Silco is easily my favorite character to come out of Arcane. It was such a hard hitting moment to see that he actually loved Jinx all along. In the end, Silco was never manipulating her, every word of encouragement and support was actually genuine. He loved Jinx like a daughter. More than himself, and even his plans for Zaun. He was still an evil man, but would never give up his daughter for his ambitions. He loved her above all else. Such a well written villain that you can empathize with deeply. One of the best antagonists I've seen in years. So complex and multifaceted. He stole the show for me whenever he was onscreen. Even though his motives and goals are that of a villain, his whole character revolves around doing anything to achieve power and that should be respected. His voice actor is the cherry on top that ties it all together, amazing work from Jason Spisak. He is the definition on how to write a sympathetic villain.

benj

Although it's hardly the most notable thing in the episode, a moment I really enjoy but don't see anyone talk about is just after Sevika kills Finn and she and Silco exchange words. Silco: "Were you tempted?" Sevika: "Not for a worm like him. But he won't be the last." I like the additional twist that last remark puts on their relationship and her character. Her loyalty is not unconditional (I mean obviously, looking at Vander), and he knows that. There's a mutual understanding that she is only here because she believes in him and his cause, she is prepared to take action on her own if that ever changes, and she's honest about that. Of course, it's not SUPER relevant anymore... But I like the tiny hint of nuance it gives her.

Xylen

I agree with your criticisms of Vi to a certain extent. I think you were spot on when you said her character flaws were impatient and punching her way through problems. Her prejudice against the topsiders is only harming her and the people around her, it’s not conducive to real progress. Both sisters’ issues were reinforced by the environments they were in during the time skip. It’s easy to see how Powder/Jinx was affected because up until this episode, Silco was alive. We can see how Silco shaped Jinx since he’s been so present in the show, but the way Vi was shaped by her time in jail is much more subtle. Vi was in an environment for 6-7 years where those traits of ‘punch first ask questions later’ were rewarded and vital for survival. Any “oh maybe trying to fight my way out of everything isn’t the answer” realization she had at the end of act 1 was basically erased by her time spent in prison. You say you want Vi to be there for Powder and step up as a sister but who is going to do that for Vi? To me, it seems like Vi doesn’t have the emotional capacity to work through her own issues and skewed worldview by herself. She needs to step up but how is she supposed to do that with no foundation? I think that’s where Caitlyn comes in. I’m super excited to see how their relationship develops in season 2 because I think Caitlyn can help Vi reevaluate her black and white thinking on Topsiders. I’m interested to see where Vi’s story goes in season 2, it’s clear her character arc is far from over. I think we’ll see major development from each character. Watching you react to Arcane was so much fun, so thank you. I want to talk more about some of the other characters too but I have HW lol so maybe I'll come back.

Megan

btw extra sad fact, in the scene where Silco says "is there anything so undoing as a daughter?" the song playing is calling "is there anything so endearing as a daughter"

Francesca White

The crazies thing in this episode is that Viktor attempting to kill himself plays out the same way when Viktor is first introduced to Jayce. Only then, Jayce was the one who almost jumped and Viktor said, "Am I interrupting something?"

themightyabe

dude i hate Silco, i just don't think he's dating Jinx because the show tells us time and time again that he sees her as a daughter lol. that's not to say that their relationship isn't toxic and codependant, because it is, it's not a healthy relationship at all, but it's not romantic or sexual. also, i'd like to add that this show LOVES parallels, from Jinx and Vi to Silco and Vander. with this being said, Jinx and Silco's father daughter relationship is supposed to parallel Vander and Vi's father daughter relationship. sorry for typing this all out, i know i've made it clear that i don't think Jinx and Silco have that relationship in the past, but i only bring it up because you said in your video that you think it's because people think Silco is justified, and i don't. i think he's a terrible person, he is not helping the undercity, he is simply grabbing at power. however, i do think that viewing his relationship with Jinx as something that it's not is kind of missing the interesting nuances of his character. either way though i'm excited to watch the rest of your reaction as besides this point that keeps getting brought up i really love these reactions lol

Francesca White

Peace is only a pause between battles/wars.

Nick Heiney

Having not finished the reaction yet, I'm getting my popcorn ready for responses to his comments about viewers' perceptions of Silco (and/or his relationship with Jinx) lol

Xylen

I call Mob Psycho 100 the king of sakuga because they add sakuga animation to non action scenes too haha. Character movement flows like any regular fight scene it's incredible. Even when it's more slice of life, they animate the hell out of it studio bones truly cared about it and you can tell in the presentation, not a single wasted frame

Nick

Nooo I don't do well with waiting

Alex G

And just like that...Arcane is a wrap! (Until Season Two which probably won't be for at least another year) These were fun, but I'm super hyped for Mob Psycho 100 coming up. I watched the show for the first time recently when it was winning in the poll and boy it did not dissapoint. I have a feeling you're really gonna like it, I'm hyped to get it started on here. You are being treated to some of the best fight animation of recent years with these last couple of shows you have started. Arcane and Demon Slayer have that amazing 3D CGI but MP100 brings better 2D traditional drawn action scenes than almost all other anime I have seen, seriously some of the coolest hand drawn action I have ever gotten to witness.

benj

First thoughts, keeping in mind I've only seen the first 3 episodes, the art is insanely detailed. It reminds me of any game by Arkane studios (funnily enough), like Dishonored for example. There's a lot of nuance to pretty much every character so far which I really appreciate. People hyped up this show so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed but wow Also... the voice acting, what the hell? A welcome surprise, it's phenomenal. Phenomenal all around

Nick

I just watched the first 3 episodes with my brother and wow this show is incredible so far. It's also weird watching it with a sibling but enriches it at the same time

Nick

Now, you have to wait like the rest of us… the next could take three years at the least, considering this one took six years to make… ugh, and I thought waiting for MHA’s next season or the final season of Bleach was bad…
