The fact that you don't know anything about League and didn't have any idea how Powder ends up after this first three-episode arc honestly made your reactions all the better!

crow pancake

Unfortunately we can't really expect Vi to be mature in that situation. End of the day she's still a kid. Powders voice actress is only 15 btw. She did amazing in this episode.

War2244

"Who is this unsavory character?" She was in the bar in the last episode, calling Vander weak for not wanting to fight

Stephen

Well, I needed a good cry after work today and ho boy did I get one with this episode.

Bells_Sparrow

SAME lol

Geneva The Weeba

As someone watching this season of Attack on Titan alongside Alex, it has been very tough not watching it on my own as I wait for the release of his latest episode lol

ComicalSkate

YEP YEP, dude is my second fav character in the whole show. So complex and his voice actor nails every line. Incredible villain.

benj

Yeah tbf I thought the same, that Powder would show up and mess up the plan by having to get rescued by the rest of them. Little did I know...

Pat C

Just a shout out to Powders VA she was just a little kid when she recored her lines.

Jacob Keyser

I sobbed my eyes out after watching this for the first time and took a week break from binging the show. That was just too much. All the feelz 😭

Your reactions to Heimrdinger are so funny but also kind of showcase his fatal flaw, as it were? He's ultimately probably right about how magic is going to ruin everything and all that, but the way he speaks about the whole issue is like he's so removed from what the people he's supposed to be in charge of are actually feeling and experiencing. If he just tried to relate a little bit more and be realistic about how a young, idealistic scientist views the world instead of expecting everyone to defer to him on the basis of experience, it would go a long way. There is validity in Jayce's perspective, and you can't ignore that Jayce has seen first hand how magic has been used to save people and better their lives. Plus as Medarda has expressed, the city is in a time where they're looking for something to change the world. Understanding the context of these motivations and decisions would help Heimrdinger to approach the conversation from a better angle to dissuade them, or at the very least be able to meet in the middle and guide this exploration safely. Instead, he's like a parent that only says "because I said so" and then acts shocked when their kid disobeys them. It's not that his experience doesn't merit respect and credence, but at the same time I think it's a "you gotta give it to get it" situation when it comes to valuing each others' perspectives. I think there may be ways to explore the arcane safely, and I think there may be approaches that will cause the armageddon-hellfire-end-of-the-world thing that Heimrdinger's worried about. But what's more certain is that it's this black-and-white dichotomy between "full steam ahead" and "slam on the breaks" that's going to cause the most problems down the line.

I'm not even 100% on this, but I think the significance of the cog going through the magical focal point in the Jace-magic-floaty scene was that it was transmuted from whatever metal it originally was to pure silver. Sort of an old alchemical principle.

MikeWest

The woman they kept showing with Silco and got caught in the blast is Sevika. She was the one who told Vander 'you look weak'. She betrayed Vander and went to Silco side because Vander wouldn't fight. The bomb only exploded once. They showed multiple perspectives so it looked like the bomb went off multiple times but it was once.

Yusuf

Give Goodwin some time with Heimerdinger...I'm sure he'll be won over eventually.

benj

Love the parallel visually with powder’s explosion and Silco’s drowning. This show is so smart with conveying the parallels between characters. Oh and love your reactions as always! :)

RyanKat

Ok so I know u kinda have a disdain for heimerdinger, but picture this. This guy has been around for a long time and imagine magic is equivalent to like nuclear power and having been around that long you’ve seen the destruction that nuclear power has caused and like entire civilisations wiped out. As mentioned, Piltover was created to “escape the war mongering of mages”, surely you would be very strict on the use of magic and what not. I kinda get why it may seem like heimerdinger is like the “bad guy spoiling everything” cos I feel we mostly follow Jayce and it’s kinda like an underdog story in the sense where it’s as if the system is against him and such, but I think heimerdinger does bring up valid points about the dangers of exploring too far given that alot of the tech jayce was working with was unregulated and kinda illegal. That’s like finding out someone was working with bomb components. Also heimerdinger is the only one on the council who is a scientist just like Jayce so he understands where Jayce is coming from which is why he was the only one to visit him in the prison and told him not to mention magic, cos he was sorta trying to protect Jayce as well from the other councillors

"He's got that Ursula fish tank, right?" "Is that Vander?! Something about that BEEFY figure," "Everyone needs purpose, and you ignore that need at your own peril," "Pish-posh, et cetera," "When you're facing what you feel is death, you've got nothing to lose," "Let's take this old fuddy-duddy out of the picture," "Hit 'em with this. Pepper shaker," "Suck it, Pocahontas," "If she were only to drink my Ursula juice," "We've done it. We have unlocked the power of moving things from where it was to where it would've gone anyway," "That kid died, but at least he got the chance to be right about Powder. So there's that."

Geneva The Weeba

I just want to put it on the record that I love Silco. He is my favorite "bad" man.

Athena

got busy with life, and forgot about this starting this month! Im hype I have 3 eps to binge haha

Brock Percle

The scene where Powder is begging for Vi not to leave, and then says "I need you", hits me really hard every time. Top-tier voice acting in that scene. You really feel the tragedy and desperation. It's really such a shame how things ended up.

arcana✦vox

Got a little anxious waiting for this to be posted. Could not have been more right with my comment from last episode. One of my favorite parts of episode 3 that often getting overlooked is the parallel between the opening shot and when Powder is falling from the side of the building. Silco's and Powder's understanding of these two moments could not be more different in the instant they happen. And then, the very next thing Powder learns is just how much they are the same. And then despite the anguish of knowing what she'd done, we're also shown the fear Powder feels of not knowing what will happen next. Of course Silco find her.

7thdilemma

The opening scene to this episode sold me on the series being a personal All-Time favourite. The calmness of his tone directly contrasts with how violent his plans are, much like the feeling of drowning itself. A part of him craves that peace, but he knows that to survive, he must fight. For a villain to be relatable, despite his ambition, is surprising. I'm excited to see you react to more of him!

benj

That opening monologue from Silco is easily top 5 scenes in the entire show for me.

benj

I totally cracked up at your descriptions of the flare the Vi gives to Powder: "Hit 'em with this...pepper shaker." "Couldn't at least give her a real weapon? Gotta give her a cheese grater?" My kitchen tools seem to be severely lacking!

jdthebud

I feel like I gained IQ points reading this comment

benj

The shot in the beginning where Silco is in the water is a direct parallel to the shot of Powder falling out of the building. Also I think it’s important to note that Silco was planning on killing Powder until she mentioned being left by her sister. Then he immediately projected his own trauma of being betrayed on to her. He was only able to care for after seeing himself in her. The parallel between Vi/Powder and Silco/Vander is brilliant. Arcane makes good use of narrative foils and duality.

Megan

haha You're not allowed to die without giving a speech first or something! Media conventions require it.

Alex G

I didn't! I was wondering why there were those few reveal shots on her lol

Alex G

Vander: *gets stabbed twice, falls off bridge onto glass, takes dangerous drug, jumps out of building landing on back* *dies* Goodwin: well that was abrupt

Emma Root

Gotta give the props to Powder's VA in this eps honestly

Tea-Spin

Yeah that was my impression as well. There's no way if she had more time she DOESN'T go back to Powder and try to pick up the pieces

Alex G

btw i dont think you realised this but the lady that took the hit for silco is the same person that called vander weak, meaning she switched sides to work for silco

Nat

I really respect and somewhat envy your discernment for the subtle dominoes before the hell. At some point, most people pick up on the chain of events, but even the more ambivalent-seeming dominoes like Vi's emotional intentions betraying her capability on their first heist. That discernment is may be too nebulous of a quality for you to explain, but do you have any advice on developing that?

Sean D

I think there where three crystals in the bomb though

Megan

i know Vi didn't react in the most ideal way, but there's NO WAY i could blame her. she's like 14, AND she just lost almost all of her family. she probably felt like she had to get away from Powder for a minute before she did anything worse. but then she was knocked out before she could go back and save her

Francesca White

Not sure if you caught this, since I didn't on my first watch, but the monkey only explodes once, it just shows multiple perspectives of the explosion. The wind up key is making the same movement each time it's shown.

jdthebud

“She’s going to show up and blow it” THE IRONY

Megan

I realized that at some point but... then went right on back to Vee. I should have it down by next episode

Alex G

Definitely! I'm curious to know what else she's done but feel like it's not the time to look the show up on IMDB yet

Alex G

NO I HAVE HW I will be back shortly with my traditional list of Goodwin Quotes, of course though, fret not

Geneva The Weeba

btw, her name is pronounced "V-eye" not "V-ee", i know it's confusing lol i thought it was pronounced Vee at first too lol

Francesca White

Wouldn’t say Vi everyone’s downfall, not that she didn’t play a role in what happened. I think Silco’s at fault the most. Going even further than that the system of Piltover and Zaun is incredibly flawed, pushing our characters to take the action they take. Five by five takes just released a video essay on Arcane and they go into detail about how the events in Arcane are almost fated, it’s really interesting. Spoilers for the whole show though. Megan

My attention was caught within the first scene of the first episode tbh, and I adored the pilot and the second episode. Maybe this was just me tho. Honestly other than the final scene this episode doesn't particularly stand out to me, the whole show is just an unrelentless masterpiece from beginning to end. I know this is crazy high praise so not everyone if anyone will agree but this is just how I feel about this show.

benj

And it was with this episode, Arcane really caught peoples attention…

Matthew Richson

Powder's voice actor in future episodes for me is easily one of my favorite voice acting performences ever. She steals EVERY single scene she is in, you all know what I'm talking about lmao. Easily the best character in the show. These first three episodes are basically just her origin story.

benj

i just gotta say i'm amazed at the voice actress for Powder this episode, probably the best voice performance i've ever heard and the actress is only 16!!

Francesca White

Shout out to the voice actors this episode. They freaking killed it, especially Powders.

Megan

NOOOOO poop been looking forward to it all day. See you tommorow then!

hays collins

Wasn't expecting this tonight. I'm actually very happy with getting this first, AOT can wait honestly...got so many other reactors for that still to get through anyways. Based on your reactions to the first two episodes it almost seemed like you had seen this episode already lmfao. You were on the nose about everything going to shit and Vi being the architect of her and everyone else's downfall.

benj

And so we find ourselves at episode 3... shit got real, real fast.

Sam B

AOT will be up in the morning (US time) :D
