That wouldn't change the situation or the problem though. Momiji still wouldn't be able to see his sister or his mother. Like, it's important to note that it's not like Momiji feels like his father doesn't love him or resents his father for not paying enough attention to him. What pains him most is that he still very much loves his mother and sister, but can't interact with them in any meaningful way.

Yep. Always count on Momiji to make me cry. This episode sets up so many things you don't notice until you know the full thing... I can totally see why some manga readers are mad with the Momiji's issue. In the manga, Momiji grows over time, being the same heigh as Tohru by that time. Never understand why they would change that.

Evalone

Fair enough

Onigiri

I really don't wanna get into this discussion to that depth.

That's an intriguing point I hadn't thought of. That would raise my opinion of the dad, but I'm not sure if that would be any better for Momiji, especially since Momiji puts everyone else first. If his father had erased himself from her memory, then Momiji would be burdened with the fact that he (indirectly) nearly caused the death of his mother AND (indirectly) ruined the happy marriage of both his parents. It's also very possible, calculating the ages and how old Momiji looked back then, that his mother was pregnant with Momo at the time of her hospitalization. It might even be that her second pregnancy is what caused her to have such an extreme breakdown. If this is the case, Momiji might have felt the extra burden that he'd be breaking up his future sister's perfect family. Of course, I'm not saying Momiji's father considered all that. More likely he was selfish and prioritized his wife over his son, or thought it'd be fine as long as he loved them both but kept them separated. It's just that I don't know if that kind of alternate reality is something Momiji would be any happier with.

Onigiri

Momijis father also had the option to erase himself from his wife's mind. Then he could've raised Momiji by himself and maybe she would've found happiness elsewhere. But he chose to build his own happiness and family without Momiji.

Ietseatapples

I think Momiji's mother erasing her own memory is the best choice for herself, but not really anyone else. The family of four's happiness is dependent on her happiness, and she can't be happy if Momiji exists. But the family of four also can't be happy if Momiji doesn't "exist". In the end, the only one who can be happy in any scenario is the mother with erased memories (and Momo who didn't know about Momiji, but that's already falling apart). It might be that the father and Momiji considered all of this and decided that letting only the mother be happy was ultimately the best option, even if it was a bad one. Memory erasure is a poor and unnecessary choice, but that's only on the basis that the person involved would be willing to change in the future (like with Kisa's mother). By choosing to have her memories erased, she willingly and gladly cut off all possibilities of bonding with Momiji in the future. For that reason, I feel like even if she had time to try and adapt, she would still reject Momiji. The main problem wasn't so much that she hated Momiji, but that she hated Momiji and herself for giving birth to him. So even if she kept her memories and Momiji did his best to give her space, she would still be miserable/a danger to herself, and no one in the family would be happy. Not to mention, her husband would probably avoid being in contact with Momiji for her sake, so Momiji might "lose" both a mother and a father. It's overall a tragic situation with no feasible perfect solution. The whole problem revolves around her, and would naturally be fixed if she could just accept Momiji's existence, but some bad parents are just gonna be bad parents and not want to change. And that's Fruits Basket~

Onigiri

I think you mean 2x18 and 2x19 are a two parter. 2x17 is not part of that arc. That is a standalone episode.

Ietseatapples

Tohru and Momiji are my top two favs in fruba characters....I love all the scenes they are together in...🥰🥰🥰🥰

raesh

This is one of my favorite episodes (although tohru's collapsing animation still gives me a chuckle), but honestly season 2 especially from this point on is just flawless to me. The next two episodes in particular are kind of a two-parter and two of my favorite episodes in the whole series so I'm super excited that we're here!

HarperBeeHave

In the middle of crying I busted out laughing at that moment, she looks like she got shot😂

I'm quickly realizing our time with Fruits Basket is soon coming to an end......I rue the day it happens. Hopefully at some point in the near future (one of the next 4 or 5 reaction series) will be another slice of life and/or romance anime, these are the type of shows that still peak the most interest out of me, as good as the fantasy escapism can be in other more popular shows the real life human shit is what I find the most compelling overall.

benj

This episode in sub absoutely ruined me, one of the hardest crying moments ive had in the show just seeing how sad tohru was after her convo with momo. This is definitely one of the best episodes of the whole show tbh, kinda under rated in my opinion. Its MILES better in sub for Tohru's and Momiji's performences specifically.

benj

Honestly season 2 for me was just a cry after cry episode. I can't wait for you to continue

Mackenzie

This is my favorite episode in season 2. I just love Momiji so freaking much 😩 and the last scene keeps making me tear a little.

Andrea Rodríguez

Had quite a rough day so thing was just he pick me up I needed. As for the memory erasure, I feel like the fragility of the whole process shows how much of a bad idea it is. It feels like using a bandaid to fix a broken leg. In Momiji’s situation, it seems like they’re making a child bear the pain and suffering in place of an adult. And hearing Momiji talk about it, Oddly enough I blame the father more than I blame the mother who rejected her own child and willingly forgot him.

Jerry Ferrell

The scene where Tohru falls down in front of Momiji is infamous in the Furuba fandom for being a bit weirdly animated LOL. It makes her look like she is going to pass out or something. Odd animation aside, I really do believe that the second half of season 2 is the best part of fruits basket. There isn't a single episode i would call boring. The part at the end with Tohru and Kyo was short but one of my favorite scenes in the show. Also non-spoilery fun fact!! The couple that caused Tohru to run away from Kureno was Hiro's parents :D

Sweetbun

my AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH didn't post? or i forgot to hit enter??? idk but all i feel is AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Brimmy

Momiji moments ALWAYS make me cry 😭😭 I'm so excited for you to see how the Kureno situation goes!!! He also makes me cry

Brooklyn Doreen

It's very interesting that both Kyo and Yuki are benefiting from Tohru in very different ways.

ArmdVctr

Ah yeah that makes sense. Listening to that song now :D Very fitting

Alex G

Tohru asked momiji to play A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes from Cinderella in the manga. They probably changed it to avoid issues with Disney

Chelsea leisle

i'm SO excited for the next 2 episodes, especially 2x18! it's one of my favs

Francesca White

Kyo: When you get a guy you like i'll route for you- Tohru: IMMEDIATELY starts crying lol

Francesca White

man i relate to Momiji so much in this episode, when i was in 8th grade i was split up from my little sisters as they went into foster care. not being able to see them for years was the worst thing that's ever happened to me. i understand Momiji's pain so much </3

Francesca White

also in this case i understand why they did it, she literally stabbed herself in the stomach with scissors, she was definitely gonna die if something didn't happen. obviously it could've been something other than memory erasing, and the whole point of Momiji's episode is that he wants to keep his memories even though it's hard

Francesca White

i agree with you about memory erasing being bad and stuff, but you said "don't they have the right to choose for themselves", you may have forgotten but in this case both Momiji's mother and Momiji agreed to having her memories erased. it's still a horrible situation though, especially since the father doesn't seem to be putting as much care towards Momiji as he should be.

Plant sneaking theme is legendary and has infinite meme potential
