In Attack on Titan 3x9 Ruler of the Walls, Eren punches the air and his own face. Rod Reiss Titan punches my delicate sensibilities.

Attack on Titan 3x9 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

Comments

I don't blame you at all. This made me physically nauseated, and that almost never happens.

Alex G

The concerned "Erens" are quickly becoming disappointed "Erens"

Alex G

It's a debatable topic, but most movie trailers are downright spoilers these days. You're right it'd be fun to see his reaction, but I still don't think it makes sense for him to watch an extract of something he's gonna see right in a few episodes, in a couple of weeks. That ending is an amazing teaser when the next ep is due in a year from now, cus you'll defo forget its deetz, but not when it's a question of a couple of weeks :) Imo, the fifth opening is a great TEASER to the season in this particular case

Chestnutkun

You're fine to watch the ending of Episode 12. It's easy to view things as a spoiler in hindsight, but this is a TEASER. That's like calling a movie trailer a spoiler. It'll be fun to see your reaction as you'll have no clue what you're in store for.

Vali

It's definitely a spoiler.

Amy

The next episode is one of my all time favorites

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

I know you'll be watching episode 12 soon and I really advice watching the credits, it has an amazing tease that leaves you boggled without the context. It makes you wanna just keep watching more and more and the best part is that it has no context so it's not even a spoiler.

SirLagginton

Armin is just...he is so goddamn amazing. His humanity, level headedness, scary intelligence, his great strategic skills and his ability to understand the bigger picture...makes him like such an ideal individual.

Yusuf

alternatively maybe he could watch it and just not really try to dig into it because it will be gone into more soonish. while it is spoilery i just think the effect and even them putting it in there is such a cool thing

Rhodur

Hey Goodwin, since you're a few eps ahead, I've gotta let you know that watching the 12th ep ending poses a certain danger because you might see something from the future, that happens in a few eps. It's an unpopular opinion, but I strongly suggest you skip the credits of the 12th ep altogether, I've seen quite a few people regret it cus analysing what you are going to see might end up being a huge spoiler. Or you can watch it with your eyes closed ;) Also, the next opening is generally believed to be spoilery, but I disagree with that because it's more of a means to hype you for what's gonna happen soon (also it's my favourite op, so I could be biased) but here I'd strongly suggest you'd watch it, it must hype you properly.

Chestnutkun

Levi ain't self-conscious about his height. King status

It just be like that zzz

when season 3 first came out i was made so nauseous by the the double whammy of zackly's feces torture machine and rod reiss's faceless flesh-accordion titan that i dropped the show and didn't come back to finish it until last november lmao

bryn sutton

Isayama also said in an interview about that scene that, “Levi is not concerned about being referred to that way. But after Eren said it and Levi thought about the moniker by himself later, he seemed hurt. He probably thought “So Eren sees me like that….” AHHHH poor Levi I feel like he's the most sensitive character on this show.

meg

Oh also the end credit scene for ep 12 idc watch it don't watch, the constant arguing between either is getting to be a bit much to see I'll be fine with either one that u choose

Brimmy

already grossed out by the holes in the titan and then it stands and u just XD "Rod Reiss Titan punches my delicate sensibilities." that doesn't even begin to explain half of ur reaction LMAO its so good but yes everyone is traumatized by this titan its so gross but so iconic

Brimmy

i love how done Mikasa is with Eren these past few episodes. the look she gave him while he was crying a few episodes ago paired with this scene "well.. eren's punching himself in the face. better go stop him :\" idk if mikasa is the rest of the audience but at this point she is definitely me

Lulu

I still haven't made up my mind lol. I'm leaning towards watching it though.

Alex G

I definitely think Eren punching himself is him realizing that while self-reflection is good, when that degrades into self-pity, it has stopped being useful. So, I think Eren realized that the last few hours of him crying, begging to be eaten (because of a literal "sin of a father"), and feeling guilty for thinking he was special, is not going to save the city from being destroyed. Armin says that they're here this time, so it won't turn out like Maria, which I think snaps Eren out of his pity party, long enough to focus on more important things. Good point about how, even if that helped in the moment, none of that is a "replacement" for all the sense of purpose and determination he lost as a result. Hopefully he can work on that next. NOT REALLY SURE HOW TO CLASSIFY THIS BUT IM GONNA SPOILER TAG IT ANYWAY JUST TO BE SAFE Did Alex ever make a decision on the E12 ending? Because I started out iffy on it, and the more I think about it, the more I think at best it's redundant, and at worst it would actively harm the reaction. Just wondering.

Derrick C. Shields

yeah historia might be a character my opinion turned around the most for. dang shes badass

NitrousOxide19

Hahaha that’s even funnier after season 4 haha

hays collins

I really enjoyed this analysis. I felt Eren's self-reflection and change of outlook, but I think I didn't focus enough on the fact that Armin was actually putting something pretty solid in front of him. This episode DOES paint a somewhat positive picture, that even though things are bleak overall, you can trace progress through generations, starting with the handful of people working together to try to fix the problems they saw.

Alex G

Thanks!

Alex G

There's sort of a fundamental question of "what does humanity need in order to move forward," and the things that Eren and Armin have to say here kind of present two potential answers. First we have Eren, who beats himself up literally because he feels he's failed in his role as humanity's "trump card." In his moment of self-doubt, Armin offers his piece that humanity is in a better position than it was five years ago because "soldiers" stand ready to face the Titan. To him, the Scouts themselves, and all they represent as in some ways ordinary people who are so grounded in their care for their comerades/their families/humanity that they are able to be inspired to do these incredible things, are the hope of the world. Eren's crisis comes from his long-established belief that *he* himself is what humanity needed — and like you've noted it's not just Eren but a lot of people around him who've pushed him towards that line of thinking. Now, that vision is sort of cracked, but not quite shattered. I think what pushes him towards his answer in this moment is Mikasa, who in a lot of ways could be viewed as this "special" person or a heroic figure, telling him to keep working. He then resolves that basically he just needs to do better, and so he figuratively kills off the version of himself that he sees as weak before proclaiming that humanity indeed does have "an" ace up its sleeve (the singular compared to Armin's plural). While Armin's answer seems to get at the idea that really what humanity needs is "humanity," or people who are grounded enough in a sense of togetherness and care for their fellow person that they can work together against this towering adversity, Eren's answer is that humanity needs a hero — "savior" is the phrase a few episodes back — to fix what's wrong with the world. It goes back to what Levi said in the forest right before his squad got stomped: you can choose trust in your comerades, or you can choose to take everything upon yourself. In this scene on the wall, Eren in grappling with his feeling that he is a failure of a hero almost comes close to what I feel is the point, which is that Eren isn't a hero because that's not what his role is supposed to be in the first place — that's not what the world needs. In a meta sort of way, this is one of the reasons that I loved Season 2 the most— it focused more on the Scouts as a whole and on the characters than it did on Eren as the MC (which was also good because I never liked Eren that much and found the others more compelling). Sorry I wrote a mouthful but this is such a big thematic thing and I'm glad you had all that to say about it!

a. tree

I like how you draw parallels to real human behavior. Keep that energy. I like the way you think.

Lysieblu

Squirm titan fits well. The other titans look almost cute by comparison.

Alex G

Happy birthday!

Alex G

It took a lot but at least he's actually capable of reflecting. But yeah, as you said he's sort of in between, so it will be interesting to see what takes the place of what he believed before.

Alex G

No one not even Eren can touch Eren. Mikasa will make sure of that

R'Mani Leavell

And so ends the SQUIRM TITAN, so named cuz that's what it makes me do. What a design. Makes the regular titans look very wholesome.

Thai M

i can't wait for season 3 part 2 and season 4 because that's REALLY where the series chages color and flavor

juice box!

Oh, you happened to post on my birthday! what a great gift haha ;)

Holi

I really do enjoy how confident/competent the Scouts have become over the seasons. Now that they are no longer hounded by the government, they're taking steps to solidify their importance in the fight for humanity.

Aura Y

That's a good point. There's barely even a nation

Alex G

If we're being honest, Eren's been depressed since season 1. He's just been using his rage and warped perception of the world as a mask for it. It's like an unhealthy coping mechanism, at least that's how I see it. But NOW he's unlocked Mega Depression. Titan edition.

Nick

Rod Reiss face reveal reaction, perhaps the easiest thumbnail? Anyways, welcome depressed Eren! Idk how to feel about it!

Kotryna

You're not the only one, when I first saw the Rod Reiss titan's deformed face I was absolutely not prepared. Attack on Titan is a violent show that has gore, but I didn't expect it to show guts and as much as it did. So it caught me off guard. Also loved your analysis on Eren in this episode. He's reflecting a lot. Even though Eren punching himself was literal in this episode, I related to that on a more symbolic level. Anyone who is very hard on themselves can probably understand that feeling, so the scene where Eren punches himself hits me surprisingly hard. A literal visual representation of what he's doing to himself psychologically. But I also love how he says: "I hope he's dead and gone for good." That reminds me of when you're sort of trying to shed a past part of your life and grow. In Eren's case, it's still unclear where he'll end up, but he is at least being reflective, even if it's leading him to stuck be in the middle. It's better than being stuck to the side he was previously on.

Nick

Historia’s reason for participating in the battle was to be be seen by the citizens in the city. She knew that they wouldn’t take well to a ruler they’ve never seen, so this fight was a perfect way to prove herself. Erwin was worried because she’s irreplaceable, losing her would of rendered all the work he put in in the last season as useless. Since she’s now his queen, he’s technically in no place to stop her. It was a good strategic move on her part and her gamble definitely payed off.

Megan

it makes a lot of sense that part 1 of season three doesn't have one of those national anthem-like openings.

Keegan Brakhage

I completely agree! Attack on titan has so many well written characters (Thank you Isayama!) It’s so refreshing to see, especially in the shonen genre. I love Historia and her character journey.

Megan

One of the coolest things about the show is how it’s kind of designed to make it easy for the audience to draw really strong conclusions about certain characters or justify certain actions and then gradually makes it harder for them to hold onto those stock convictions as you gain a better understanding of the world. The mystery elements of the story, on top of just being really engaging, play a really interesting role in the show’s themes of empathy and choice in that way

Rebecca

Historia is one of the best female characters in a male-written anime, i love her so much. (i only say male written because female authors tend to write the female characters better)

Francesca White

Yeah it's bad

Alex G

That trypophobia is pretty real though haha

Paul

If you didn't get the part when Eren was trying to control Rod, he was shocked because he called him a tiny old man whilst forgetting that Levi who is a tiny old man was behind him lol.

SirLagginton

Ngl if i saw that Rod Reiss titan irl as a kid my grandchildren would still be having my nightmares

malikparah

"Kenny is the bad guy" oh but he one of my favourite xd lol
