I realize this is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy after the fact but I can't help but point out that RBA in fact DID already kill and/or attempt to kill most of their fellow cadets when they launched their attack on Trost. We saw previously that they appear to have directly killed Marco, and a substantial chunk of their cadet class was also killed by the Titans Bertholdt let into the District when he destroyed the gate. That's without even getting into Armin's speculation that the only reason they didn't directly breach Wall Rose (and thereby cause even MORE deaths) as well was because Eren appeared as a Titan.

Conor

Just how many times Eren must be broken..? Wow

Dorney_Sunraint

He said he will be putting it out this week!

a. tree

Malordy the feeling of left-outedness right now with AoT is through the ceiling, manga just finished and EVERYONE's talkin' bout it and I'm sittin here as an anime only just barely keeping myself from buying the manga, not sure how much longer I can stay sane tbh :<. Congrats on 1,000 patrons btw, you totally deserve it :3.

ShadowAgent

Well its like killing zombies there is no known cure for Titainism so the human thing would be to kill them. like Ymir said it was living nightmare. At least they aren't having to kill living humans.

Jonathan Canfield

Blonde guy with sexy abs riding Monke Titan and 1,000 patrons?!?!?! LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

benj

Being defeated by the titan probably gave him closure then weirdly

Nick

i love how you love abs

Season 2 Finale wooohooo!! This is also one of my most favorite episodes because of how well Eren’s VA portrayed his grief so well. I felt so much for him and it honestly almost brought me to tears the first time i watched it because shit keeps happening to this guy and the trauma keeps building. Wanted to ask if you had any thought of watching Levi’s OVA before season 3 starts? I wouldn’t say it’s NECESSARY but I do think a better understanding of Levi’s character and his interactions+thoughts would be helpful to really follow his thought process throughout season 3, because thankfully, he is a major character in the next season unlike season 2 where he’s just tagged as #injured for the entire thing lmao. Cant wait either way!

Mima

I read the last chapter of the whole manga yesterday. The manga is completely finished. I can't wait for you to reach the last episode of the whole show (they are currently producing the last season of the show). I felt a lot of things when I finished the manga. Such a journey. Will take a while to process.

Yusuf

It is interesting you mention eye for an eye potentially being a good justification for justice as Islam's justice system involves the 'eye for an eye' type justice. Just something that came to my mind because I didn't fully agree with that part of my religion.

Yusuf

'Abandon all hope ye who enters'

Yusuf

I think he could have killed the smiling titan if he focused on going for the kill. Instead, he decided to take the time carving up the titian.

Yusuf

The lines are going to become so blurry, you might aswell go blind

iaani

So Hannes was right in episode 1. He wasn't strong enough to face the smiling Titan and save Carla.

Zac Rushton

I don’t know if you noticed but it wasn’t a lack of a goal as to why Eden couldn’t transform, it’s simply that his hands were still healing, you can see the steam coming of them still.

Jk844

“An eye for an eye” isn’t justification for doing something to someone, the original context of that is that it’s a limitation on what revenge you can take on someone. What I mean is if someone takes your eye the most you can do back to them is take their eye. If someone takes your eye, you can’t just kill them.

Jk844

i remember reading somewhere that the writer said that erwin’s character didn’t ‘click’ for him until the scene where he smiles after learning that titans are human. and i feel like that checks, there is a shift in the depth and awareness of his character between seasons 2 and 3 so if you like erwin now i can’t wait for you to see what this man brings to s3 :)))) keep up the good work man and as always i’m unbelievably stoked to watch your future analyses

bryn sutton

I was thinking, if no one is in a position to justify immoral actions than how do we justify punishment? Punishments are immoral actions done onto criminals as penalty and we generally justify that by saying “they deserve it”, but if no one is in a position to dictate justification how can we say that? I came to the conclusion that we can’t so I started thinking of an objective metric to dictate justification and the first thing that came to mind was “an eye for an eye”, u deserve done onto u that of which you’ve done to others. It seemed free of subjectivity at first but then I realized it’s more complicated than that. Every action has context and that context creates subjectivity which brings us back to our original problem. Edit: Tho I wouldn’t say it’s absolute ig if the majority comes to the conclusion that something is justified than it’s safe to say that it is, the problem occurs when u leave that decision in the hands of an individual.

jhāna

Erens dad wasn’t blond :) if you do realize something about him, please don’t post it in the comments, it’ll spoil someone

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Love love love the reaction! BTW, will you react to no regrets before season 3? Id suggest you do, it gives Levi a bit more context!

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Thanks for that summary, that helped me appreciate Ymir a little more

Alex G

Am I the only that now from that last scene realized that monkey titan is Eren's dad? Im only going because of hair and glasses but like where is he if he isn't in the city lol?

Juan Valencia

Another thing at 10:03 is the flowers covered in blood which is shown in episode 1 season 1 when Eren has that dream at the very beginning. Cool little detail I think.

SirLagginton

:( The timing makes it hurt even more

benj

I saw the notification for this at work and I just sighed, because I remebered all the pain I was gonna have to relive.

SirLagginton

i'm not sure if someone else already commented this, but the reason eren couldn't transform when hannes was getting eaten was because his fingers hadn't finished healing yet. it's really hard to see, so it's easy to miss. and right before he punched the hand of the smiling titan his fingers finished healing

joe martin

I like to think that Hannes was looking at them with hope. Like he says time and time again in this show, Eren Armin and Mikasa together can take care of themselves just fine. I'm sure he was believing in them to the very end.

a. tree

You talked about multiple people having their own reasons to fight and the line getting blurry, I believe you are going to love s3 part 1. It is a very character heavy season and it is wonderfully crafted imo. And about the op's and ed's you can watch part 1's op no problem but please skip part 2's op. It is straight up filled with spoilers of what is going to happen.

Mert

Overall I did enjoy season 2 more than season 1, though I think the forest expedition is still a contender for... how would you put it? "Best set of episodes?" I'm not sure this is what you're referring to exactly, but I did feel a difference in season 2's storytelling, and part of that was that the plot seems to have more of a direction and the stakes were sort of refocused towards the characters and away from something alien and unknown.

Alex G

Thank you :D

Alex G

No matter how many times I've seen this episode it always breaks my heart. Seeing Hannes dying using his last moments to look at Eren and Mikasa one last time, probably apologizing to them that he failed again even though they wouldn't care about that if it meant him being safe, Eren breaking down at his powerlessness to save the people he loved, and Mikasa, at this point fully believing that they are going to die, revealing to Eren all those things she felt and everything she was grateful and letting him know that he really was strong, Armin desperately trying to protect Jean with everything he has even though everything seemed hopeless, Erwin seeing his soldiers die trying to protect him even though he's telling them that he isn't worth the sacrifice(even though we all disagree) and even hearing them shouting for him as he dies. There's hope in the end with Eren's new found power, however, as all victories in AOT, there's too many casualties for cheerful celebration. Edit: Holy shit I just noticed Ymir was crying at the end of the episode T__T

mr_wordcraft

Okay I have said way too much but I am procrastinating and just have to comment on Ymir and Historia's character arc this season. Ymir's story is so heartbreakingly tragic in a bittersweet way. Through no initiative of her own she gets thrust into this position as a child of having to provide something for other people. Even though at first that "something" is just a sense of validation through her presence alone, when push comes to shove she ends up putting her own life on the line for them and gets punished, hard. After an unimaginably hellish existence as a titan with little to know cognitive ability or free will for 60 years, she finally emerges with a new will to live only for herself — only to quickly meet Historia, someone with a similar story her who has somehow become self-sacrificing and giving to a fault. Contrary to what she had just decided, Historia makes her want to live and care for and sacrifice for someone beyond herself. At first she rationalizes and covers for it by saying Christa has strategic benefit, or pushes other people away with rudeness because it's just Historia who she's willing to care for and no, no one else. But in the end, her relationship with this girl has fundamentally changed her. Moved by Bertholdt's pleas to be understood by somebody, she willingly moves to physically protect the pair and even decides to become their prisoner, knowing that this will likely lead to her death regardless of what Reiner and Bertholdt try to do about the situation (let's hope they figure something out, though). In the end, though she tried so hard to just care about herself, her relationship with Historia changed her into someone who is willing to give up so much for these people who she doesn't even have that deep a connection to. I wonder, in the next couple seasons, what ways we'll see this relationship has affected Historia, who seems to have a parallel but in key ways opposite character to Ymir.

a. tree

Glad you had a good time with Season 2, better than Season 1?. Also, if you notice there was a subtle shift in the storytelling aspect on Season 2. I can say that Season 3 will also have another shift on story, atleast Part 1. Also, you can view the NEW opening without seeing spoilers from the get go, it is a very very very subtle opening in terms of what happens so no worries there. Aniways, really enjoying the reactions dude :)

Sh3nx

To be honest I'm fairly confused by the plot lmao. I can think of a lot of things it COULD be, most of which I've shared, but it's all pretty fuzzy for me. One thing I'm wondering about from this episode is what is in store for the people inside the wall? It seems like they are being set up or prepared for something. And somehow Eren being there makes it somewhat okay, or safer. And I'm guessing the ab guy who showed up at the end is there to facilitate whatever this thing will be. I think he says "not ready yet," at the end. I think where I get the strongest feelings is not the plot, but the characters. And along those lines my feeling is similar to what you described above about Eren. It's not just Eren, either. A lot of the characters seem to have a very precarious emotional existence... and given the dark slant of the show, I can imagine things going very wrong for a great number of them.

Alex G

While I agree it was Erwin's decision to capture Annie in Stohess and that directly led to civilian death, their were like 4 different back up plans that all unfortunately ended up failing but all put in place to keep any civilians from dying. Everything went wrong that could've gone wrong over and over again in Stohess and the original plans to capture her beforehand seemed likely to work, in hindsight its easy to say it was predictable Annie would fight off against all these different fail-safe's. Also, they had to do something quickly about an enemy of humanity residing within the walls and their own Military, I don't think they had a lot of options, could be totally wrong though and missing some details from those episodes.

benj

Bro i literally just watched this same episode from another reactor a couple hours ago I still have ALL the feels when eren screams but i also have all these feels ALONG with the feels from finishing Final Season which if u think THIS episode is nuts just wait till u catch up its fricken \i n s a n e\ idk i'm just so fricken excited for u to react to everything also early gratz on 1k patrons! 7 away!

Brimmy

If he killed scouts in this episode, that definitely crosses the line for me and makes me sad to think about. The wall thing I'm more hesitant about. Time is what makes it complicated for me. Similar to your point about it being easy to care more about core characters, I also think it's easy to want to see characters as solid, unchanging objects. But thinking about it in terms of life, people change all the time, and there are some difficult questions there, such as: "should we be forever judged for the sins of our past?" "Is redemption ever possible?" To me the answers to those questions are "no" and "yes" respectively, and so what's important to me is evaluating who they are now.

Alex G

With your discussion about 'ends justify the means' thinking, how you you view Ewin's decision to stage the capture/battle with Annie in Stohess? The fact that he involved a large civilian population without their consent?

FriedChickenDeluxe

Lol this episode is so chaotic so I don't think I stopped to think about that, but in hindsight, what did he think he could accomplish?

Alex G

In my opinion, Season 2 is the best season in terms of just how perfectly artfully it is crafted — the exhibition, the story arc, the buildup, the climax is all executed masterfully in just twelve episodes. That being said, I've gotta say Season 3 is my favorite in terms of enjoyment. "Action and answers" is a great way to put it. S3P2 is a stellar adaptation of a long fight arc, and I don't even necessarily like fighting anime that much on their own.

a. tree

On the point of you saying that either the recruits or Reiner/Berthold killing one of the others would cross the line, I feel like that line has already been crossed. Reiner and Bertholdt already arguably killed erens mom and thousands of their fellow countrymen. Even in this episode, although we did not see the titans Reiner threw explicitly kill one of the core group I am sure they did kill some people. I think it is easy for the viewer to attach more weight to the deaths of characters we know, but killing unnamed characters in the world should be considered the same as killing the main cast of characters in my eyes.

Roman Cardillo

s3 is divided into 2 halves, and in my opinion, is the best season in terms of action and answers. this is where the series starts to evolve, cant wait for tuesday!

juice box!

I think you hit the nail on the head about Eren's character and about Reiner's "prophecy." The most vengeful, emotionally unhinged teenager in the world has a giant chip on his shoulder and the power to control seemingly any and all titans he wants. Recipe for great things, I'm sure. One thing your commentary has made me pick up on more is that it's not just Eren driving himself down this path of potential danger and darkness. It's his friends, the corps, the expectations of everyone around him. And they totally don't mean to push him this way or even realize what they're doing! I think I've shared a similar idea before that for pretty much ANYONE else, advice like what Jean says at the end of this episode would be exactly what that person needs to hear. But for Eren, given his innate qualities and the way he internalizes things, it always feels like he's increasingly teetering on the edge of... something. Will he go over the edge? What's on the other side? Only those who keep pushing forward through this series will ever know. So now with the introduction of Eren's "coordinate" titan-controlling power, and the confirmation that all those mindless titans are indeed transformed humans, this season has deeply broadened our understanding of the titans. In addition to the two reveals we got just in this episode, there are some other major things we learn, as well as some cryptic hints dropped in trees, over the course of these twelve episodes. I'm just wondering what you make of all of these revelations — what do you find most interesting? Are you starting to see any interconnections? Have any big-Armin-brain theories?

a. tree

Ayy, season 3 hype! My personal favorite of the bunch. The show enters a sort of golden stretch in season 3 where you know a lot more about what's going on in the world and are able to make more concrete speculation on what is happening/what's going to happen, while at the same time keeping some of the mystery to it. It's a very fun balance, but of course no story can maintain that forever without becoming annoying or just feeling contrived. My advice would be savor it if you can, because once you start knowing things, you can't un-know them.

Thai M

What's really exciting for me in a sort of meta way, that I alluded to a bit in the video, is that I'm becoming increasingly aware of VERY polarized positions regarding characters and events!

Alex G

IIRC I think it was the fingernail that did it... something about that

Alex G

That's interesting! I thought that scene was great for both Eren and Mikasa and something I want from them. Why do I feel like I'm often inversed from conventional thought?... that makes me happy and nervous at the same time.

Alex G

I could see the anger in your eyes when Hannes got ate lmao.

War2244

This episode has amazing emotional scenes and Eren's voice actor is so amazing but everytime I see Armin screaming and waving his sword around at the titan I have to laugh.

meg

One of the things I really like about this show is conflicting moral views. It's very much a "from a certain point of view" kind of thing, and that becomes even more evident the further you go in the show. There are different sides to every conflict, and they all have views that could easily be considered valid. Given that scenario, I really admire this show for not making the main cast of characters perfect and righteous. Many shows like to make their characters all good and upright, when reality is often far from that. Eren has gone through a lot, and has a lot of trauma, and he has always found really unhealthy ways of coping, and his character as it is now is a direct result of that. Not to mention he has Mikasa's coddling to enable his behaviors. I love how the show makes you really unsure of who you should be rooting for at times. I think that's what gets me interested in it for the most part. Can't wait for Season 3!

Aidan Pullen

You said it perfectly.

Megan

me thinking that Ymir and Historia are cute and like beauty and the beast in that head rubbing scene but Goodwin being creeped out is so funny to me lol

Francesca White

for real i thought it was so cute, but maybe that's cuz i love beauty and the beast couples lol

Francesca White

Ymir's philosophy: don't lie to yourself, only live for yourself--- Ymir: only does selfless acts and lives for others, lying to herself that she's selfish and living for herslef

Francesca White

Eren’s voice actor did such an amazing job with this episode. The raw grief and agony was portrayed so well. I’ve seen a few reactors hate on Mikasa during the scene right after Hanes was killed, I’m really glad you didn’t. Mikasa told Eren exactly what he needed to hear. On top of the grief and shock of losing Hanes, a big part of Eren’s breakdown was about feeling useless. He wasn’t able to transform when some he cared for needed him the most. I think Eren hearing Mikasa, someone who is incredibly strong, tell him about how he showed her “how to live with purpose” gave Eren the courage to stand up and fight.

Megan

Haha yeah understandable. Shoutout to the VAs!

Alex G

Lol yeah I keep having to remind myself of that. For me it's weeks, for them it's hours.

Alex G

I was still holding out hope for a last-minute hand slice

Alex G

man would rather fight a titan barehanded than acknowledge Mikasa's confession

malikparah

Just another reason why humanity should return to monke.

benj

Lets talk about how Eren, who didn't know that he would be able to control the titan behind him, was just going to punch at the air... how intimidating

R'Mani Leavell

This episode is honestly amazing both on first watch and further enhanced by rewatch, Eren's VA Yuki Kaji absolutely killed it in the breakdown scene and there's a clip of him and Mikasa's VA live performing it youtube.com/watch?v=eLGdbz26hK8 . Also who knew the Beast Titan was so jacked under all that fur?

malikparah

I'm so pumped to watch season 3 again!

bl0odm1st

Red Swan full song brings me to tears just listening to it. Easily the best AOT OP for me, and that's saying something because almost all of them are absolute bangers.

benj

these episodes make me glad you went with the sub lol

Logan Bradford

Remember the dream eren had in episode 1. And blood got splattered on flowers. Well, that scene happened right when Hannes got his legs ripped off.

Eddie

Did you ever realize that season 2 basically took place in 2 days or less than that. So the characters had the revelation that Annie, Bertholdt, and Reiner were Titan in a span of maybe a week or less than. CRAZY!!!

hays collins

Ymir rubs Historia’s head Me-“Aww” Goodwin-“Creepy” hahaha

hays collins

The day that Reiner and Bertholdt took down the walls really weighs heavily on everyone. Eren and Hannes are clearly forever haunted by the death of Eren's Mom. Even Reiner and Bertholdt feel the guilt of the lives they took. It's interesting to see how that one day influences the characters moving forward in their lives. Season 3 has some of my favorite moments throughout the show. So very excited to see the reactions to come!

Aura Y

There goes Alex's dreams of Hannes continuing to lead Eren, Mikasa and Armin down a better path lmao Anyway, just a reminder that the season 3 opening for part 1 is a banger and totally safe to watch I'll update after watching as usual but I-? Xifed

Nick

You gasped even though you knew it was coming

hays collins

This was finally the moment where I audibly said "Fuck this show" while watching this episode for the first time. Couldn't take it anymore. This show is just pain, with a shit-ton of meaning behind it.

benj

Well that was... some kind of redemption I guess :/

Alex G

lmao you are right. I keep thinking I should make a blooper reel one day and include an opening montage, but I never remember and I have to delete raw footage fairly regularly to conserve disk space

Alex G

It’s funny cause we’ve already been through the pain of watching this show so seeing others go through it for the first time is just funny to me

hays collins

“Oh this is his revenge!!!.....* realization sets in*...oh no oh no no no” hahah.

hays collins

“This should be a fun episode” bahahaha yeah can’t wait for you to regret that with Hanes dying

hays collins

You edit out the openings because you don't want us to hear you sing it. No one can convince me otherwise.
