Just an FYI, the URL displayed works fine, it appears to be the hyperlink that's the problem

Marcus Bae

Yup, it's working now. Thank you!

Somehow the link disappeared but it should be okay now. Let me know if it's still not working

Alex G

Not sure what happened there but it should be working now! Send me a DM if you still have problems accessing it.

Alex G

The link doesn't work now(

Dorney_Sunraint

Is there another link to watch the extended version? The Vimeo link isn't working for whatever reason.

Ahh, I see! Thanks for letting me know! I'll have to watch tomorrow then. Also I don't know why there's so much space under my original comment, aha xD

I maybe actually cried at one point watching this after reading the last chapter of the manga...

Attack on Trauma or Attack on Tragedy, take your pick 😭😭 I love how you’re thinking through everything in this show. And I think people do realize how deep this show goes upon a second and even third rewatching (I’ve watched it more than that, but still lol). Have you started season 3 yet? How are you feeling about the show? I know you said you’re enjoying it and I can tell you’re really interested in how it all plays out. Just wanted to ask! And as always, thanks for putting out these reactions/commentaries!! I think Midnight Gospel was the first show I saw you react to on YouTube, so I really enjoy hearing what you have to say!! Anyway, this comment is long enough already lol. Have a good weekend!! ☺️😊

I think what you’ve caught onto really early on is the tragic situation a lot of these characters find themselves in. There is no winner here, nobody feels like they ever get what they want at all. Everyone is desperately clinging to their own tainted ideologies and taking it as far as they can because they have nothing else to hold onto. It makes some characters pretty terrifying, like Mikasa, who has such a one track mind, along with Eren. Really interested to see how your understanding progresses as we get deeper into the story and lore.

Okay so u think the “ends justify the means” philosophy is bad because it’s no ones place to decide which immoral actions r justified? If so I agree, ig I misinterpreted a lil bit. For some reason I was thinking abt means in a general sense rather than immoral ones which is the entire thing the philosophy is tryna justify. Admittedly though I would still be willing to pursue immoral means to reach my objectives. I have a lot of surety in my reasoning capability’s but I am aware that regardless of how sure I am I could very well be wrong. Despite having this awareness it doesn’t change how I feel and I think that stems from an over valuing of my own life and in turn my reasoning and objectives. Tho it’s not diagnosed I think I have NPD, all the symptoms match up except that I’d consider myself a very compassionate individual as long as being so doesn’t put my life at risk.

jhāna

The last few episodes have done a lot for him in my eyes. I now think he is a lot stronger than he appears, judging by the fact that he has been holding all this together largely alone (considering how unstable Reiner is). And I found this episode to be humanizing for him. I knew there would be more to him and Reiner in terms of their struggle in all this, but it was good timing to have him vent his inner conflict in this episode.

Alex G

Good point, when in doubt, place your faith in Erwin

Alex G

At least the inspiration is real!

Alex G

I agree that it's not inherently wrong, but the problem is as long as you have a loophole such as, "the ends SOMETIMES justify the means," then you run into the problem of determining when they do and when they don't. And who gets to decide? If you leave that up to the individual to decide, just about everyone will come to the conclusion that their ends are justification enough (since everyone believes themselves to be right). I actually think Erwin is not a great example of "the ends justify the means," because of his honesty. I think if Erwin thought to himself, "I am going to lie to everyone to get them to do what I want, because saving Erin is the most important thing," then that would feel different to me. Instead, Erwin chooses to be forthcoming about the danger of enlisting in the Survey Corps. In that sense, each soldier is there willingly based on decisions they have come to themselves about what they want to do.

Alex G

I can understand why Mikasa's action left a distaste in your mouth but while we can see the whole picture the people in the midst of the action who are actively fighting for their lives cannot sometimes. When Bertholdt falls on Reiner and Eren so that they can escape two episodes ago, he essentially injured many of the scout regiment including Hange. They would have killed in order to escape with Eren and they did kill millions of lives to carry out whatever their plan is. Of course, Reiner and Bertholdt are not completely evil people and rarely anyone is but the fact is that they are on the opposite side of humanity at the moment and are the immediate threat and might need to be eliminated. I don't find Christa smart here, I find her purely naive and gullible if anything. Mikasa is doing whatever she can to get Eren back, Erwin would do the same too because his prerogative is humanity not trying to figure out if someone is morally gray or not while the key to humanity is being stolen.

pr37

Well, I mean, empathizing with Bertholt and Reiner already did affect her capabilities. That's what the scene where she wonders "why didn't I slice both their heads off right then and there?" is meant to be. She sees sincere fear in their eyes just beforehand and holds back as a result. I don't like Mikasa any more than you during that scene, but I appreciate the writing decision to imply that this is Mikasa severely overcompensating for - what she sees as - her weakness earlier.

Derrick C. Shields

I love Mikasa (and Erwin for a lot of the same reasons) in this episode because of how scary she comes off, putting it all on the line to save the only thing she has left in her life from being forcibly kidnapped by humanity's enemies. You cannot be more ride or die than Mikasa, she's basically a living realization of that motto. Her actions and mentality are justified here imo as her only family is being kidnapped against his will by giant monsters, and the scouts have gone through so much in the last couple of weeks (All the Annie stuff legit happened 2 weeks ago in the story) that her brain has no more ability to think about anything else other than protecting Eren. Mikasa's and Erwin's courage to save humanity and the sacrifices they make to attempt to achieve that goal is crazy inspiring and motivating.

BIRTH CONTROL LMAOO

Lulu

I really didn't like Mikasa in this episode. I can understand her mindset for sure, and it makes sense how she came to be that way, but there are issues with that as you point out in your reaction. What really rubbed me the wrong way was not only how quick she was to write off the lives of Historia, her clear comrade, and Ymir, whom Historia claimed was essentially a hostage, but the fact that she can just say *straight to their faces* that she does not care if they live or even if she herself has to kill them, regardless of their situation. It's almost ironic in a way because while Jean and Connie are talking about Bertholdt being with them for three years and not actually caring about them, Mikasa literally has trained with all of these folks for the same amount of time but doesn't even try to hide the fact that she would turn on any of them in a second for Eren if it ever came to that. The way she spoke to Historia was cruel and irrational, and just left a bad taste in my mouth. You also got to the irrationality of it in your discussion, and really astutely pointed out that this is likely something that Mikasa herself realized when the gang was all sitting on Reiner. It definitely seemed to me that she knew the act of attempting to understand Reiner and Bertholdt would interfere with her being able to kill them ASAP, and actively tried to prevent them from doing that — directly counter to the mission of the Survey Corps to try to discover the truth of humanity/the world/Titans. The biggest threat in my opinion to humanity within the walls is not the literal giant monsters waiting outside, but ignorance of the nature of these monsters and their situation. Yet when presented with the most likely avenues to gain understanding, certain characters ignore the possibility of interrogation or negotiation and go straight into "kill them" mode (like Eren about to eat Annie at the end of S1). What's more frustrating is Mikasa made a similar move of irrationally trying to kill Annie just last week and Levi had to break his leg to save her, which is exactly why has to sit out this battle in the first place, with everyone getting their butts kicked. She needs to learn to balance her care for her friends with her responsibilities as one of humanity's literal strongest assets.

a. tree

In the last episode, they showed that after Ymir was thrown over the wall and became a titan, she had straight human-like teeth. Then she came across Reiner, Marcel pushed him out of the way and was eaten. Now, she has razor sharp teeth. In that flashback, it shows Bertholt (Colossal), Reiner (Armor), Annie (Female) and then Marcel's titan. So we can infer that Ymir's titan (although small) is pretty deadly. It was mowing through those titans back at castle pretty easily, before it was overwhelmed. She could also speak in her titan form, although minimally, just like Beast titan.

Nyashaxo

Wait, the chapter is out!? OMG OMG! I GOTTA READ!

Yusuf

Bertholdt is my favorite character out of all of the amazing characters in this series (I have no idea why), especially after I watched this episode when it dropped. I was wondering about where you stood with him as a character. Love your breakdown of different characters’ motivations and why they do what they do in the context of this story . So, I was just curious about your opinion on this character in particular since he is usually overlooked by most reactors

Deerman

When you said that you can't fully get behind any of them... WRONG, Erwin you could always get behind Erwin ! When Erwin say "Shinzou wo Sasageyo" you have to follow.

Clément

Beartaught is and will always be my favourite out of the 3 warriors

SirLagginton

This is the episode that made me love Birth control

Wow since I last looked you gained 50 new Patrons - get your glasses ready everyone we are heading for the 1000 🙌

Alice 1510

the only person who would be capable of inspiring me to do something as crazy as going into battle is erwin... and he's not even real. absolute legend

joe martin

I just finished the manga today. and damn, it's bitter sweet. this one is goin down as a classic

Jack Cas

I agree with what u said for the most part but I wouldn’t say that this way of thinking is inherently wrong, because of how subjective it is. So many factors play into what ends justify what means with it ultimately being dictated by the individuals values, circumstance, and reasoning as well as the validity to those things in an objective sense. Like Erwin for example. In this episode he decided that risking the lives of all the scouts was justified by the objective of capturing Eren but ppl trust his decision because they have surety in his values and reasoning, despite not knowing wether he’s wrong or not which he very well could be, but to no inherent flaw with the philosophy just inadequacy on an individual level.

jhāna

being finally caught up, i now understand what bertholt means when he says "we couldn't come to terms with our sins".... oh wow also "[eren's] actions had a huge influence on [mikasa]" cant wait for you to come full circle!

juice box!

Levi's "spin" off. I see what you did there

Nick

I don't really disagree, but I think it would be best to avoid mentioning future episodes/characters/events whatsoever. Let his opinions evolve naturally without any indication of where they may end up.

Xylen

I love his breakdown. I think that was exactly the right moment for what we need, and also what the cadets need.

Alex G

There are no words to describe how legendary Erwin is. I'll totally watch an Erwin and/or Levi's spin-off

Carlos Salazar

Armin scares me sometimes. He's too smart...

Alex G

lmao that's real loyalty

Alex G

Yeah that is true, and we too are all big children in a sense.

Alex G

classic aot cliffhanger

benj

The image of her eyes looking through the fingers has been burned into my brain. Even though my thoughts about Mikasa in this episode might be controversial, I loved her in this partly because she is so terrifying. It's not just her ferocity and physical appearance, but the way she seems to be pushing the group into killing Bertholdt.

Alex G

Love your views on Misaka. Cause it fits so well with future revelations on her character in future episodes

hays collins

As in right now, Bertholdt is one of my favorites characters. The build up of his anxiety is really good. And that speech, I felt that deep.

Raysa Fonseca

This episode is super intense. I joke about episodes feeling short a lot but this one flew by, it's just one thing after another.

Alex G

Oh...ok I get what Ymir means now it makes sense towards what happened end of Season 3 and into Season 4

Brimmy

We can clearly see the desperation in a lot of these characters. In this incredibly cruel world, it often seems like everyone for themselves. But it's like you've said, there's a line that can be crossed on whichever side you're on. It's pretty scary to watch at times.

Aura Y

Hey that’s Historia your talking use her name please haha jk

hays collins

It is bad. Who thought you morality? Countless human atrocities have been commited under ends justify the means pgilosophy.

ArmdVctr

Armin, what does he have to give up? Remember when he was good-natured and those bullies were beating him up but he refused to fight back? Remember when he had integrity? I remember. Also omg is anyone else who's rewatching noticing the insane number of double meanings?? Isayama's mind...

Kotryna

ymir: *decapitates historia* historia's head: YMIR... I WILL ALWAYS BE YOUR ALLY

Lulu

Everytime I watch your reactions im so happy that I subscribed; i couldnt handle just 10 minute youtube vids of this T-T

Holi

People we've grown to like, operating from a place of chronic pain and sadness, with varying philosophies that bring them into conflict, is a great way to describe our situation on earth.

??

I love that shot of Mikasa and Bertholdt staring at each other through Reiner's fingers. One of my favorites in the whole show. For one brief instant, their roles from the beginning are entirely reversed. Bertholdt is the one cowering in the "walls" and Mikasa is the monster staring in from the outside with murderous intent. Chilling stuff. Remember that training flashback a couple episodes ago, where Annie and Mikasa are squaring up to fight? Annie wonders aloud if her technique will work "on a beast like you" referring to Mikasa. Everytime I rewatch that scene, Mikasa in this episode is what I think of, and you know, it's hard to say that Annie was wrong to think of her that way. Mikasa gets less focus on average than Eren and Armin, so it's always nice when they give her something to do that isn't just saying Eren's name. I think she's a really interesting character, especially when she's interacting with anyone who isn't Eren.

Thai M

It seems you’ve come to the conclusion that an ends justify the means type of mindset is a bad one and I was hoping u could explain cus I don’t rly get it.

jhāna

The smiling titan returns. I always love that scene with Bert having a bit of an outburst, followed shortly by my other favorite scene from this episode- being the scouts charging through a swarm of titans, followed by ANOTHER of my favorite scenes- being Armin getting in Bert's head. Such a packed episode, I really can't watch it enough, and I'm really enjoying your nuanced perspective on everything going on, even taking some hot takes on the negative aspects of our protagonists. It's great to see how deep you're observing everything going on, reading in between the lines sorta like Armin lol

Aaron Ong

Love the content Goodwin. Thank you

Gexshen

So now we have an injured Mikasa and a regenerating Eren while mom eater is headed straight for them as everyone else retreats...

bl0odm1st

Yeah I was confused about that too, I think because she seems so sincere when she says it but it's clearly not the case. Not only was it her idea to get Historia, but also we know how she feels about her and it's not all business.

Alex G

Sort of. I can't use it long term, but I can use it now and then while I'm looking for a full time solution. I just have to make sure to stay below their secret bandwith limit that causes them to come after me.

Alex G

ok so im not caught up on the series so i might be wrong but i'm pretty sure what Ymir told Historia was basically "i'm taking you because Reiner and Bertholt will kill me if i don't offer you over" but we know that's not true because Ymir was the one who wanted to bring her. i'm just clarifying mostly for myself lol cuz i was confused by that when i first watched

Francesca White

Vimeo's working??

Nick

What about monkey titan? *wink wink*

Carlos Salazar

Who's titan ass is the best, Annie's, Reiner's, or Eren's? Totally only thinking about this because of the thumbnail...
