FMAB Episode 63 Reaction Extended (YouTube Link below)

Comments

if i remember correctly, Ed DID use a philosopher stone: Envys stone, when he opened the portal to get them back in the Real world from inside Gluttonys stomach (?), when he saw that Al was still stuck in the portal - but yes, they did swear not to use it in their pursuit for their bodies, which they didnt :)

Fredo_Credo

I can't get through the end of this episode without breaking into tears. It's bittersweet, but especially tragic since he was unhappy all those years he was alive and just when he started to love life, he wound up dying. Great reaction. The Dwarf did indeed have nothing on his Door. Not many people pick up on that the first time. I'll see you for the next one.

A Suresh

hohenheims death got me cryin in the club again

Lulu

If you realize when it comes to human transmuation, it doesn't follow the Law of Equivalent exchange. Exchanges are completely symbolic and karmic in nature.

ArmdVctr

Yeah I couldn't even watch your reaction because of the waterfalls running down my face. Damn man the show is only taking up a fraction of the screen why can't I not get fully hit by it everytime. When Hoheinheim says that he now just wants to live a while longer as he's dying hurts way to much, he probably wants nothing more but to live on and actually become a present and active father for Ed and Al, and yet he never will get that chance. Its fucking heartbreaking.

benj

I always praise this show for having the most perfect ending. But wow itโ€™s been so long, everything just hit me all over again. So so so beautifully done.

Ijuko

"and hoenheim got to live"... I winced on the inside >.<

Stephen

Damn it, I cry every time here

Kiwa

I really enjoyed your thoughts and the discussion in this one. Thanks!

Warmlights

Are you gonna watch the bloopers reel? It's a 7 minute video you can find on Youtube which has a bunch of clips where the voice actors went off script or messed up lines and they overlay the animation with it. Would love to see you react to it in a bonus video!

ComicalSkate

Same. It's been over 10 years since I finished the manga for the first time and it's still so sad. Hohenheim was my favorite character.

Ruma Risto

I always effin Cry at the death at the grave scene every fucking time Ugly sob and I've seen this show like 12 times now.

Ramon Cintron

Did you noticed unlike everyone else's portal of truth Father's portal had nothing inscribed to it at all. Cause he never really contributed or created anything to the world he just took or atleast thats my understanding of it

Ramon Cintron

I need to stop rewatching Brotherhood, I always cry ones Hohenheim goes

The Bird of Hermes

I also think the title "brotherhood" could refer to hoenheim and father. its hinted at that the things father wanted were the same things hoenhiem wanted. Father was the manifestation of a slaves ambition.

Jack Cas

The Irony is they could have restored their bodies from day one. The power and knowledge god gave Edwards was his real punishment, and his handicap which made him rely on other people was the real gift.

Jack Cas

I cried when I first watched this. I cried everytime I rewatched with fam and friends. And once more I sobbed through this entire reaction. Even the commentary! My eyes are actually burning and itching as well so it could just be pet dander. Yeahhhhhh it's the pet dander for sure. It's a terrible day for rai- um allergies. Yeah.

KJ Gaona

Oh man this one is always hard to get through so many cries everytime. 1. Greed's Death 2. Ed's Sacrifice 3. Hoenheim's Death Can't wait to see your reaction to the final lines by Ed pretty much summarizes what the whole show is about.

Jonathan Canfield

Ive watched fmab maybe 5 times now, and Im still sobbing at this episode and Hohenheims Death in general, every time.

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

def agree with this sentiment, although brotherhood for me is still slightly better, I honestly think Goodwin would get equal benefit from watching both and honestly could like the original more or at least certain large aspects of it. Not sure if there is a lot of interest in a reaction series for it though, it will get destroyed by hunter x hunter and other shows in the poll if it even makes the poll.

benj

Never thought of the way you described when he said he lost the girl being different this time. Thanks :0.. also I cry everytime at these last eps

Kamolak

So, would you be open to reviewing the original 2003 version of fullmetal alchemist? The story diverged a lot and In my opinion itโ€™s just as good, as well as grimmer. The parts that are the same are different enough where it wonโ€™t really be too repetitive. And if you think fmab hit you in the feels like a truck, fma 2003 will hit you like a Battlecruiser.

Once again we're nearing the end of another beautiful show. It's crazy how simple and beautiful Edward's decision was to give up alchemy was. As you identified in the video, he's just a genuinely great guy who already has so much love and happiness in his life; the only thing incomplete is getting his brother back! The Elrich brothers' journey to get their bodies back was accomplished by the collective effort of all these amazing individuals and it shows how a unified force can defy the odds and achieve miracles. I'm sure I'm not really putting my thoughts into words as well as I could, but it was truly beautiful getting to experience this journey!

Aura Y

OH shit fuck i forgot all the feels ughhhh my heart @.@

Brimmy

Lol sorry, it is uploading now

Alex G

Youtube! Where art thou!

Zana

I'm here for it

Alex G

Yes, I think his story is a tragic one, and we see that step by step through all the Homunculi and finally in this episode with his final form. In early conversations with Hohenheim, it's nearly impossible to fault him, and his pitch to Ho is legit IMHO and probably makes him who he is.

Alex G

FYI, the next episode is 23 minutes of Alex Louis Armstrong and his orange sparkles. Kinda seems like they coulda focused on tying up other arcs, but it is riveting nevertheless.

Sam B

I can feel for Father somewhat. He was born bound to a jar his life dictated by those around. His only desire is wanting to be free. He saw his chance and sacrificed everyone to ensure his freedom from the flask. What I feel went wrong was his experience in the portal. When Ed went in he came out with the notion that alchemy does have the answers to everything and all he needs to do is search for them. It seemed like father went through the same. To him, the Truth showed him that he lived in a bigger flask that his freedoms were limited by what humans could do. The next logical conclusion for him was to transcend humans and take the power of "God" only then could he be free. He saw his humans sins as something that bound him and so sought to get rid of them. His test it seemed was learning the beauty of his freedom despite all that time Father never got to enjoy himself. His freedom amounted to nothing but staying in his new flash til the right time just like before.

Neubaufahrzeug

Uh oh. Description has me prepared but I know I'm just gonna be sobbing alongside with you.

benj

Lol it does indeed. To quote Master Roshi for the 10,000th time, "the truth is only painful if you live a life of lies."

Alex G

I think with Father's talk with truth you learn that the very acting of seeking freedom in itself is restricting because you can never have full control over everything in life. The only way you can really have truth is counterintuitive, by which I mean you have to accept the truth that you'll never really be free or in control. This is of course what Ed learns. Alchemy and Father's desire for "knowledge" are really just stand ins for the collection of power of any sort. It's something we all deal with in life, albeit in many different ways, but the easiest and most universal way to understand is probably money. We spend our whole lives thinking we just need more of whatever it is and then we'll finally be "free", finally be done with it. But it's an impossible task and ends up just restricting us even further in life. It's something I think Shakespeare touches on in Richard III by having Richard create the very problems that undo him through his attempts to congregate more power. The same is said for Father. He never realized that no matter what he did, he was and always would be living in some sort of flask.

Alex Begley

Oh yeah, one thing to note for the next episode: make sure you watch all the end credits. You'll see why.

Sal Inger

Sorry, Father... the truth hurts.

Obyl

Which makes total sense to me. I think it has to be that way

Alex G

This episode sealed the deal for me in that way

Alex G

I like that interpretation a lot. The more I think about it, the more my thoughts about the Truth Being change. I initially thought of it as an actual God-like entity. But that would be too much for any of the characters to really understand or handle (see: Father). I guess it's more like a reflection of the characters, which is why I think Father wasn't really directly punished by God, he just reaped what he sowed. And I think with Ed's realization, the opacity on his beliefs faded and it was just him.

Alex G

I really love this show. Many tears were shed.

Etsch

Update: Alex: "And Hohenheim got to live! Yes!" photos taken moments before disaster yet again. Previously seen with the Levi squad. I absolutely love this episode. I think this show was perfect for your channel, especially coming after ATLA and Korra. To me, they feel linked in many ways thematically that I can't fully explain. Even though my love for Ed as a character was already solidified by this point, the moment where he says: "What do you mean lower myself??? that's all I've ever been. Just a simple human who couldn't save a little girl. Not even with alchemy" boosted my respect towards his character even more. That self realization that he's been carrying these burdens thinking it's his fault, and he has those voices of his friends and loved ones supporting him going through his head... It's brilliant. Really loved this one, really loved what you had to say, and I can't wait for the epilogue. I remember recommending FMAB before the Patreon even existed, and thinking: "this show would be perfect for his style of content." It definitely hasn't disappointed.

Nick

This is literally the fourth time I've watched this series and I still teared up my gosh. Also I just noticed, but I think it's amazing how the brothers had everything they needed to get their bodies back from the beginning of the series (except Ed's leg of course). But it took their journey and the friends they made along the way for them to realize it.

Kim Sa

This show genuinely has one the best, most fully actualized stories I've ever experienced and the way all of the themes are entirely consistent and relevant throughout the entire run-time is nothing short of genius in my opinion. This and Avatar are top-tier for me for those reasons.

Tmatts

as far as truths voice sounding like other people, i think that was intentional. Truth says I am also you, so they have the actor's voice blended in with Truth's

Sitasien

๐Ÿ˜ญ Father makes me think of stories of ex-friends who are too far gone, addicted to some pursuit that ends up destroying them. Hohenheim thinking about their good times. Honestly, he wouldn't have even had such a fulfilling life if the Dwarf in the Flask hadn't taught him so much, since he would've just lived the rest of his days as a slave otherwise. They're both major parts of each other. It's just sad man.

Kotryna

Ed's voice actor is actually cited as voicing Truth for this episode (for that moment I assume), along with the other voice actors. I think there's a few in the amalgamation of Truth. So it's definitely intentional. I personally think it's a metaphor for how Edward Elric unlocked his sort of own inner truth, if that makes sense. All of his struggling and strife was justified in this moment where he pieced the puzzle together. He was always just a human, and realized alchemy can't solve all of his problems. He gained a deeper understanding of himself, and so the Truth reflected that, maybe? He viewed himself as Truth in that moment? An important line Truth says is: "You've done it! That's the right answer!" excitedly, when he figures it out. He even made God/Truth's mouth go wide open at the idea of sacrificing his portal. I think there was definitely a level of respect there.

Nick

I haven't mentioned this before, but did you notice that for each person's interaction with the gate, Truth's voice sounds a little... different? Both in the sub and the dub, Truth's voice contains a distorted version of whoever's facing them at the gate. Curiously enough, the distortion is faintest in this last interaction with Ed and the gate -- see that scene one more time, and you'll definitely hear Ed's VA as Truth claims Ed's victory. I take it as that Ed has finally reached the actual Truth within himself, or at least as close as anyone possibly can. And for dwarf having a door with nothing on it -- he never learned anything, so there is no mark on his gateway to truth.

Say

A detail I love is that if you think back, whenever you see someone's door or truth it's detailed with images unique to their knowledge. Ed's door is different from Al's door, or Izumi's or Mustang's. And then there's the humonculus's door which is blank, he never learned anything on his own and stole all his knowledge from others just as Truth said.

Noah C

I'm not sure if anyone has an answer to this, but why does Truth sound like Ed as he says, 'Goodbye, Edward Elric.' I'm sure that it has something to do with how Truth says that 'I am you' but is there anything deeper than that?

themightyabe

I think the poetic nature of Envy's death was that he died as this pathetic little worm, beaten by people who had what he most envied but never had himself. Not at all enviable.

Alex G

Pride was humbled Wrath died at peace Sloth was over exerted Lust was killed by a man Gluttony was eaten Greed died selflessly I love the irony in the homunculus the deaths. (To this day I donโ€™t understand he irony of envyโ€™s death...exposed of his jealousy?)

R'Mani Leavell

and of course i commented before i saw your total reaction lol. good job noticing, I did not notice till about my 3rd time rewatching

Sitasien

notice how Father's gate of truth is blank? very interesting....

Sitasien

I havent fully resolved the issue yet. I will either have to migrate off of the platform or alternate between Vimeo and another hosting service. I'm shopping around for options while waiting for Vimeo to get back to me on some details

Alex G

I wasnโ€™t.

T-mo

I had no idea. As I said in the video I'm happy to have a whole episode epilogue :)

Alex G

a very proper video description๐Ÿ˜‚

joe martin

Are you planning on going back to vimeo?

Eddie

It's a terrible day for rain.

Sal Inger

Yeah, hopefully nobody spoiled you. This is the finale, the next episode is just the epilogue. And you were right. The evil was human: the alchemists who created the Dwarf in the Flask and the desire for immortality from King Xerxes.

T-mo

*looks at the description* yeah that sounds about right

malikparah

DESCRIPTION IS SO ACCURATE LMAOOOO This is one of my favorite episodes of the show, I can't wait to watch this and give an update as we venture into the final episode of the show.

Nick

oh man, i was so ready for this
