FMAB 1x2 Reaction Extended (YT link in comments)

Comments

I was just going to comment on that! I think the dub version does a superior job at explaining the motivation AND the emotion in each scene. The Japanese voice acting seems a bit more subdued in comparison to the English version--though, perhaps contributed to English as my primary language.

I almost feel like you'd need to re-watch these episodes in the dubbed version before you dig into the next bit, once they show up. The dub/sub difference actually changes some lines of dialogue enough that I feel like the context of some of these interactions is either lost or changed. If not re-watching them on camera, maybe binge the beginning again before diving into the dubbed portion of this series. The dub for FMAB is truly fantastic, as far as they go. Definite recommend.

The third episode of FMAB is actually the first chapter of the manga. The first episode was made specially for the anime and isn't in the manga. I'd be interested to know if you have any thoughts on the two types of "beginnings"! They have very different writing styles but both use effective storytelling to introduce the characters and themes to the audience.

I'm not sure about the flashbacks but I think Edward is about 15-16 years old in the present and Al is around 14.

Ruma Risto

The way Riza changed Winry by saying she has someone she wants so protect. And later Winry accepting the difficult reality of losing Ed and Al to the same army who got her parents killed. Damn, I just love this anime so much,

Raysa Fonseca

The way Ed shreiks and writhes around in pools of his own blood makes me so freaking uncomfortable, I can tell it was hard to watch.

Nick Deano

It was this episode that got me hooked to the anime and started reading the manga as well.

Jackie

I never even thought of the similarities between Sam and Al before now, but that really is a great comparison!

Kassandra

The show gets even darker, just you wait...

Kassandra

This episode explains it through narration I believe. Also, I started watching the dub with ep 3 and so I heard it there at least :) I talked about it a bit too

Actually the only thing u'll need to memorize is: Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth. idk if Al says it in the sub but i know he says it in the beginning of the dub

Brimmy

Glad you're enjoying :)

It's a truly heartbreaking scene. Two young kids overcome with grief that just want their mom back.

This is great so far. I haven’t seen this show but I’m gonna not watch ahead and just watch your reactions to it and watch the show for the first time

I'm both excited and terrified...

Alex G

This show has some of the darkest moments of any TV show ever made, animated or not. "Ed......ward........" just you wait Goodwin, just you wait. Some of it is genuinely horrifying, at least it was for me my first time.

benj

The flashback scene was horrific. I've seen it in full about 4 times now, on this watch, while editing, and also going back to rewatch the dub of the first 2 episodes to get acclimated. Everytime I've watched it I've teared up. And one of the saddest parts is Al! Poor kid, and Ed knowing that and realizing what he's done has pulled his innocent brother into it...

Alex G

Holy shi...crap this show gets dark! You'll discover more about the lore, inner workings of alchemy, and Ed's experience with "god" or "fate" or whatever, so you'll just have to keep watching. I've always drawn similarities between Alphonse and Samwise from Lord of The Rings. They're both that unconditionally loving and supporting side character that the "main" protagonist probably wouldn't last long without. He's so kind-hearted and wholesome and you can't help but just love him.

Aidan Pullen

Haha yeah Fuhrer King Bradley is awesome. As are the brothers, and my boy Alex Louis Armstrong and his glorious mustache/tweety bird hair combo.

Alex G

I love when series show off the legitimacy of power that the ruler has early on. It really gets you hyped for what might happen later on. They easily could have just said in passing that Bradley is an accomplished swordsman, but theyve already given us two great examples. Not only that, but in 2 episodes youre already introduced to multiple powerful and reputable characters
