Korra season 2 episode 7 reaction (extended)

I was not expecting that! Thank you great Lion Turtle.

Korra season 2 episode 7 reaction (extended)

Comments

im getting as above so below from your ending comments =]

James Berry

Its fun to think about though thinking there is 183 it almost sounds like a reasonable request to have stories for each 😁 if only lol

Cody Taylor

Thanks, I don't feel as stupid now lol

Alex G

In ATLA when roku talks to jeong jeong he does say the avatar has mastered the element thousands of times. So this is most definitely not a settled topic lol but the 183 seems to fit the cycle if it started on fire meaning the 183 avatar would be a water avatar which korra is so it does fit neatly and hard to find faults in

Cody Taylor

Curious to hear what you think about it as well.

Alex G

Awesome :)

Alex G

I get what you mean. I agree that we don't really need to know everything about the Avatar. At some point you just have to take things on faith. But I ended up liking Wan and somehow I came away from these two episodes appreciating the Avatar system more.

Alex G

That makes sense. I'm not sure why I thought there were so many. There couldn't have been if there are only 10,000 years between Wan and Korra... Unless their average age is like... 2 years old.

Alex G

Like many others have already commented, I was really looking forward to you getting to these episodes. I am one of those who really loves these two episodes. They are some of my favorite episodes in the entire Korra series, even though I consider this season the weakest of the four. I look forward to seeing what you think of the rest of it. But judging by your reaction already, I expect you will really enjoy the second half of the story. You made several comments about how much you like the look of this episode. I also really appreciate the sound track.

Blackeyedlily

Ever since the Korra reacts started this was the part I was most curious to hear Goodwin's reaction to. Did not dissapoint

Manuel Alves

Wan is voiced by Steven Yeun!

Brooke

I like the added dimension of the lion turtles giving humans the elemental bending abilities and them mastering it from the original benders, like how master piandao says the sword must bbe an extension of yourself. Simply having the ability is half the battle

James Berry

Seems like these are either everyone's most loved or most hated episodes. I think they could have done more with Raava and Vaatu, but Wan made a great first avatar.

lockwould

This is when the Dragon dance is born!! The one zuko and aang did to learn proper Fire Bending :))))

chachin

The duality of these comments has me dead

James Carswell

These two episodes are so god forsakenly awful I wish they never existed. Only good part about them is the animation, thats literally it.

benj

Ah, at last we are at the Beginnings episodes. Some of my favourite and I am so glad you enjoy them a lot too, because I know many people do not. Cannot wait for the next (hopefully tonight's) reaction!

ComicalSkate

For me this was an unnecessary lore dump that demystifies the Avatar itself. It's like if JK Rowling told us how wizards and witches originated - we don't need to know that. All we need to know is that they exist now. The writers chose to go fully in depth though, yet there are still huge plot holes after pt 2. After my first watch I really enjoyed it but after reflecting on it I've come to really dislike these episodes. This - coupled with the way they turned the spirit world from an interesting alternate dimension with recognizable spirits that made sense in our world to an Alice in Wonderland trip with colorful amorphous blobs makes the world so much less..possible, if that makes sense. ATLA's world was almost as if it was earth's history from ancient times but LOK has gone full blown fantasy. Fun fact: Serena Williams was the voice of one of the fire sages: 'We found the avatar washed up on shore but she doesn't remember anything.'.

Darby

The show loves using δΈ‡ (wan) a lot.

Jackie

To answer your questions about how many avatars there have been. People in the Fandom have assumed a few things. One that there is 10,000 years between wan and Korra. And from there we see approximately 181 statues in the southern air temple this is backed up funny enough by the movie.... Which also had 181 statues so we can assume 183 avatars total which is actually alot for 10,000 years! It would make the average age of an avatar 53-54

Cody Taylor

I think it's much cooler and makes more sense. The lion turtles were the source of the spiritual side half of bending and it's power, and the original "benders" were the source of their respective styles. I know there's people that complain about that being a retcon too, but if going by what was said in Avatar, if people learned from the "original benders" then why are nonbenders still a thing? What was stopping Sokka from taking lessons from Appa. It made much more sense that Lion Turtles gave them the power and the original sources taught them to actually use it as a martial art.

WolfWarrior623

I think that's exactly why that line was dropped. and for me, I think the spirits in avatar have mostly been viewed by a lot of people as neutral, and without thinking about it, it's easy to think of neutrality and it's 2 sides just being good & bad, that kinda thing, so I imagine people just kinda took that association and applied it to book 2, and Beginnings. Hell I've even seen at least one person recently sttraight up complain that book 2 turned spirits into all good or evil. Which I don't blame people for with how often those themes are used, I just wish more people caught on to the idea of neutrality and balance that the show was trying to convey.

WolfWarrior623

There have been a handful of episodes in the two series where I feel like the writers defy time somehow by giving you way more than normally seems possible in this format. Zuko Alone, for example. This is another one of those episodes.

Alex G

Ah that's a good point about the phrasing and the timing of that. And yeah, it seems like they're making a distinction between having the elemental abilities and being skilled in those abilities.

Alex G

That's interesting. I think even if the themes weren't interesting (which they are) they just look and sound so damn cool... Maybe it's related to what has been said here about it being seen as a "recton" of sorts. I wonder if that's why they have Unalaq drop that line about there being "no good or bad spirits," in order to help us avoid thinking that about these two great spirits.

Alex G

I love the Dragon Dance. I think that among the videos in my ATLA reactions, that episode had the biggest negative reaction because I got mad at the end of the episode. I was mostly mad because I had enjoyed the dance so much and got mad that they belittled it lol

Alex G

I was wondering about that later. But yeah, I don't think it's a retcon necessarily. I think there's room for both. For example, Toph has the innate ability to earth bend because of the chain of events starting with the Lion Turtle, but she learned it from badger moles.

Alex G

I really didn't expect it. For the most part my thinking so far was, "okay, there's an Avatar, the end." I'm glad they dove into it a little more in a way that is mostly satisfying.

Alex G

Yeah I didn't even realize that until later. It was tough... A lot of good moments had to get cut just cause there wasn't enough talking.

Alex G

Yeah some people don't like what they perceive to be retcons, but I think it all works well with what had been previously established. As the two of you said showing Wan learn more "refined" control over fire through the dancing dragon is a good way to do it. I don't know, to me lion turtles *granting* an element but the original bending forces teaching proper *bending* of the elements makes a lot of sense to me. It develops both the role of lion turtles and the role of the original bending forces a bit more than what was shown in ATLA.

Joqu

Ah I'm so glad you enjoyed this one (and I assume the next), they're truly some of my favorite episodes in both ATLA and TLOK. They're just so beautiful, and they establish so much in only two episodes. I could've watched a whole series about Wan, but they execute his journey so well in only 40 minutes. Plus yeah, major Ghibli vibes. I just love the spirits in this.

Joqu

I also like how they refer to it as "using fire" or "the power of fire" instead of bending, because there wasn't such a thing until Wan learned from the dragon and "used it as an extension of himself" as the Chus observed. Which is also consistent with the "original benders" teaching bending as described in ATLA. The lion turtles can give the power, but how you use it is another thing. I just love the consistency, backstory, and lore of it all

Neth110

Yea tons of people forget that aspect of it. This isn't really a retcon or a massive change, people never *received* bending from their respective spirit/animal, they just *learned* how to use the bending. Some of my favorite episodes no doubt

SupremeCai

I've been so hyped for your reactions to this, and I'm happy that you seem to like the idea of Raava and Vaatu, since the fandom is pretty 50/50 on it. and as I've seen other people mention before, a lot of people misinterpret them, and book 2 overall to be "good spirits vs bad spirits" rather than what it actually is, Order/Peace vs Darkness/Chaos.

WolfWarrior623

Season 2 is underrated for sure.

William Abbott

Seeing Wan perform the "Dancing Dragon" always gets me hyped.

D DuB

I loved seeing Wan do the dancing dragon. Not only is it a great callback to Zuko and Aang's journey, but it also illustrates how people learned bending. Even though the lion turtle gave people the power, they mastered the elements by learning from dragons (fire), moon (water), badgermoles (earth), and sky bison (air).

Ana Andrade

These two episodes are some of my favorite out of both series for so many reasons. I could gush about them for an hour but I'm just gonna leave it at I'm so psyched you're finally here! Either way, this type of exposition/ world building is my favorite, and is why I get invested in many of my favorite fantasy series. The themes are really strong and really make things feel more complete.

Aidan Pullen

I had a feeling you'd love these backstory eps but u were so into it for most of this that u didn't say anything, I'm curious as to how you plan to edit this for youtube

Brimmy

7 and 8 are definitely highlights of this season, and the entire show. They're so good.

Chess Red Eagle

Love these 2 episodes :)

Jupiterninja

Not a huge fan of episode 7 or 8 tbh, but I can appreciate them for what they are. The lore is pretty cool

shady07

Been waiting for this reaction ever since you started ATLA! Wan's episodes are SO good!!
