The Painting Passion of Jon McNaughton feat Joshua Citarella (Premium E285)

An exploration of the most famous right wing crank painter in the game: artist Jon McNaughton. From tea-party-era images of Obama burning the constitution to MAGA-era images of Trump as Atlas, the progression of his career has mirrored a deeper shift in the Republican base and its obsessions. Our guest is artist, writer, and host of the Doomscroll podcast Joshua Citarella.

As ever we badly need a government program for failed creatives where a paid audience tells them their shit is good, actually to prevent them becoming insane fascists out of sheer bitterness.

I always pictured McNaughton as an old kook who lived on a farm somewhere happily doing his pictures of Presinald Trunt on his lonesome, probably into ufos and obsessively collects jars, you know the type. Devastating to learn he's a smug former finance ghoul who's just as obsessively online as the rest of them.

I was thinking about what cool conservative art would look like halfway through the episode. I had a couple of ideas that would be kind of metal but I cringed at the thought of making it even if it was satire so it was relieving when you guys had a couple kind of metal but questionable “cool Jon Mcnaughton painting” ideas. Love what y’all do, critical support 🫶
