Storms Upon Us (Premium E263)
Added 2024-10-15 05:27:49 +0000 UTCConspiracy theorists are finally admitting that human beings DO have an impact on climate change. But it’s not our ever-increasing carbon footprint, no, it’s actually just a very specific group of people who have unlocked the technology to CONTROL the weather – and direct it at their political enemies. In this episode we break down the multitude of conspiracy theories surrounding recent hurricanes Helene and Milton, and Liv threatens to steal a hurricane patent from Bill Gates (we’re all rooting for her).

Hi all. I have a friend with the following enquiry: "I'm after things that explain the psychology of why conspiracy theories are attractive, and how to use CBT or other techniques to check you're not getting drawn in." Has this ever been covered in an episode? Or does anyone have any leads? Thank you!
Heather Luna
2024-11-01 00:20:32 +0000 UTCAbsolutely. The idea of the patent is to cool off the hot surface water by swapping it with cold deep water. This ought to actually be an exothermic reaction or close to it, and it might even be practical! But to INTENSIFY the hurricane you would have to HEAT UP the hot surface water more than it is! Basically you'd need a giant heat pump, to make the surface water hotter and the deep water colder. But that would require a LOT of added energy to run pumps, compressors and what not. You're working against thermodynamics here. I doubt this is practical 😕

2024-10-18 02:20:31 +0000 UTCI just wanted to say that I also hate the fake-awkward, purposefully stiff style of dancing people have been doing on tiktok to Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The move with the arms slapping your sides is based on a dance move from New York I believe, and people have been doing it awkwardly like that since before it became a trend to do the dance to that song specifically. Some are referring to the dance as “greeping” now as Liv said because it’s a micro-trend to do the dance to a song off the album The New Sound, the solo debut by Geordie Greep of the British avante rock band Black Midi. I don’t know if the dance officially has a name but that’s why some people call it “greeping,” although I hope that name doesn’t stick as it would be wack for this goofy performative awkward dance to be associated with a pretty damn good debut effort from a unique artist.

2024-10-17 14:42:38 +0000 UTCI believe Jake said there was a lithium mine - it wasn't my assertion. But there is a pure quartz mine: "Spruce Pine, it turns out, is the source of the purest natural quartz—a species of pristine sand—ever found on Earth. 2024-10-17 14:41:17 +0000 UTCIn the aftermath of Milton I wanna (self-indulgently) suggest a whole episode on Sarasota, Florida. I lived here most of my life, and the transformation of a quaint little artsy college town into a gentrified haven for MAGA Republicans has been rapid and stark. Between Desantis's fascist hostile takeover of New College of Florida, being the home base for Michael Flynn and Truth Social, the latest incident of racist attacks that has people calling the place a sundown town, and being the kind of place where a business called Bitcoin Ben's Crypto Club™ Trump Emporium™ can apparently be successful and thriving... There is a lot to discuss IMO!

John Smith
2024-10-15 21:33:55 +0000 UTCI want to point out that the advice Lieutenant Dan gives us actually true *in most bad weather situations*. A boat that stays near the shore will be tossed against the rocks, it's much safer out at sea. Waves out at sea also don't generally break, they do just go up and down. However, in the case of a Cat 5 hurricane, get tf out. He's giving advice that might work in, like, a situation where an unexpected thunderstorm, andyou can't find safe harbor and have no other options. It is much safer to go out to sea and stay away from the shore. A cat 5 hurricane is a much more severe weather phenomenon, and it's not like alternatives aren't available.

2024-10-15 19:17:24 +0000 UTCsorry, something else to add: florida's evacuation protocol for milton wasn't as intense as everyone seems to think. if you don't live directly on the water or in a mobile home, you usually aren't asked to evacuate for hurricanes. yes even if you're in the direct path of the storm. yes even for how intense milton in particular was. plus, price gouging on gas and airline tickets made evacuating for people who weren't required to leave pretty much impossible anyway.

When it wasn't people saying it was targeted weather weapons, it was people posting fake photos and saying the storm was making landfall at a Cat 5. It's like we only exist to be a political talking point. That somehow our real suffering wasn't even bad enough.

2024-10-15 13:32:46 +0000 UTCWhen a patent expires, the patent holder loses their exclusive right over the technology being patented; anyone can make those machines now (provided they aren't infringing anyone else's valid patents in doing so). So the idea that anyone has a monopoly over creating hurricanes because of expired patents is doubly hilarious. Also would love an entire episode delivered screenplay style.
