PERVERTS Episode 4: Porn Conventions feat Spencer

Expos and Conventions where porn stars meet fans are liminal spaces where awkward interactions are the norm. It gets worse when Youtube content creators show up to "interview" the talent. Our guest is Spencer of the Those Good Old-Fashioned Values Podcast.

This series was brought to you by the QAA podcast. Thanks for supporting us on patreon!

Comments

🤯 mfw they are discussing perverts on the pervert mini series.. and for some reason they aren’t being sex positive about them!

gav

I’m a year late to seeing all the psuedo intellectual arm chair psychology done to defend some of the biggest freaks in the world 💔

gav

Bro why did you write like 8 comments on this? Youre making up so much shit like write this story in your journal

Smooth Shrekees

These comments are so hilarious, you could not pay me to feel bad for people getting made fun of for going to porn conventions.

Hannah Lux

Feels like the commentary in this episode wasnt done in good faith

Nolan-Globus

QAA subs accusing each other of being pedos in a comments section. We've come full circle!

Nolan-Globus

Has anyone found any of the jman097 tweets they read? I don’t have twitter and can’t find them

Lizard

I listen to this show for fun and laughs not homework

Smooth Shrekees

I got a facile for ya right here in my pants

Smooth Shrekees

This episode made me think of the time I went to a strip club with Angela Aspen (preachers daughter to porn star to porn abolitionist possibly back to porn star?) Also- would love love love to hear you discuss my fave pervert community- hobbyists/providers (and would be happy to chat about it if desired.) Loving this content and you all.

Emmyghoul

The veteran of the Goon Wars is an iconic moment

Giant Gorg

This series rocks, thanks guys!

kate kelley

I liked the episode and I've liked the series so far :)

David Friedman

I'll settle for just Ben Mora, but I'm with you fellow listener

ploob

I’ve been really enjoying the series but I do agree with others that it’d be great to have interviews with sex workers or people otherwise involved in the story. Also we really do need slides.

M J

"The Five People You Meet In Heaven St. John."

Casper Fox

Yh, annoying. He only speaks in Twitter lingo, "Let's fucking gooo", "Dreamworks face" etc. which is just always deeply unfunny.

Lindymizer

I thought the episode was interesting enough although I'd say a more apt title would be: the types of guys who go to porn conventions

psidew

I can tell that Liv is not Gen-ex because she didn't include David Foster Wallace's classic think piece on the AVN awards. (Big Red Son) https://ia904701.us.archive.org/8/items/english-collections-1/Consider%20the%20Lobster_%20And%20Other%20Essays%20-%20David%20Foster%20Wallace.pdf

Last Years Man

personally, I subscribed for this series

It's possible everyone's criticism is based more on Spencer than the show. His comedic style is not good and does not fit the general vibe and aesthetic of the QAnon folks. Let's not have him on again.

Ian Story

I am confused with the criticism. Julian and Liv are clearly sex positive. The subjects of Perverts are folks who do not have a healthy relationship with sex.

Ian Story

The people saying this podcast is sex-negative or detrimental in any way should have their hard drives checked.

Josh Greer

Do you all need to talk to an actual sex worker? I can put you in touch with several. Mostly professional Dominants in the BDSM sphere. It's been frustrating to listen to this mini-series and feel so othered :-/

M. Valenzuela

For whatever it’s worth I wanted to weigh in because it seems like there’s a lot of disagreement about this miniseries. I’ve been a long time qanon listener but it took this miniseries for me to become a patron. I love hearing about the stuff you guys are able to find about these bizarre topics. Maybe this one was a bit too mean but still a great episode. I think sometimes sex positivity goes too far and we permit behaviors which are utterly destructive simply because we feel the need to allow everyone to do what they want. I’m gonna say it: worshipping a porn star is not something we should be encouraging, male sexuality needs to be a little bit restrained sometimes. Well I’ve now written an essay that will likely be read by no one, have a good 2024.

Kai

I think that people forget that there used to just be regular episodes and premium episodes of QAA. Now we get both of those plus a bunch of these limited series for the same price. Just don’t listen to them if you don’t like them, you didn’t even pay for them.

Fellow Worker

yup.

Chris Brandon

These comments are exhausting holy shit.

Null_null

If you’re insulted by the jokes on here including some of the facts, just repeat to yourself it’s just a show and you should really just relax…for Perverts69k

Lizardbreath

This is just facile mockery with no heart. I felt like I was listening to a couple of 15 year olds.

Slumberlust

Right? I have a friend who is a sex doll enthusiast, and I showed him episode 2 and he thought it was absolutely hilarious. I don't really get all the comments saying this is mean-spirited, and I think the hosts have tried to be open-minded. What I have heard the hosts criticize is when these subcultures become misogynistic or they start sexualizing children. Those people should be looked down upon. They also stood up for the sex workers in this episode a lot. They made fun of the YouTubers that leered at the workers. I'm a lot more sensitive than most people, so I tried to find all this punching down, and I didn't see it. People are just being exhausting scolds.

Ky Rus

Why did you have to go so hard on the intro music? Everyone on the train always looks at me funny when I blast it from my iPhone Gen 2 speakers.

TheDeadman

Hope yall cover the criticisms people are pointing out, imo this series feels more voyeuristic than educational and after reading what people wrote I'm not sure that's what others were expecting. The problem being that this content is so taboo its hard to find any other coverage beyond dry academic stuff. So the people looking for deeper conversations are just kinda turned off by the current approach. I have a feeling polyamory is coming up and would like to recommend "The Leftist Cooks" youtube video on that for the folks looking for more educational content. Personally though this series has become my guilty pleasure lol, keep up the good work and happy new year!

Andy from Kansas

Well said, thanks for having the compassion to speak up for that family.

Tom Padget

So many perverts taking Perverts so personally.

Casper Fox

Definitely the weakest of the series so far. I would have been fine with a few minutes of pointing and laughing, but no interviews with any sex workers? At all? Nothing from the other side of the convention booth? I love you guys but this episode just felt very one-note.

Aram J. French

Like, there's not a lot of education here, or interacting with folks who are a part of the different scenes you're covering - or even people who have researched or interacted with these groups. It's mostly point and cringe. And I worry y'all are gonna get to some niche queer subculture or kink scene as a topic, and do what plenty of other folks have done, which is point and cringe for your audience.

Igneous21

This series feels like the podcast version of cringe compilations on YouTube.

Igneous21

I think this spinoff was created for Julian's midlife crisis of sorts. I'm here for it, I guess. The dating one was fun.

Daniel Greene

Send Bryan and QAA to Hedonism ASAP

hamburglar

I hope there’s a convention like this for those erotic cryptid books

hamburglar

They're not disabled, give up this insidious false equivalence shit. I've lived with and hung around many of these types in younger years, the way they treat and talk about women when they think no-one else is looking or hearing is consistently awful ugly concerning stuff, and am glad to be away from nowadays.

Overzealous Euthanasiast

This miniseries feels the least qualitative out of all of QAA's. I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to get out of it? I'm definitely not getting insight, information, or even entertainment. It does feel quite slimy. The way people into Qanon are looked at, talked about, talked to, and presented on the podcast is fantastic - so much understanding, maybe pity and anger, but never condescending. The way people are looked at in this miniseries is the complete opposite. I think I'll skip the next episodes.

Luminita Stanila

Sex isn't a need, lol. That's some incel type shit to say tho. having a wank will have to do I'm afraid. The rest of us have been trundling along and making do with far far less for far longer.

Overzealous Euthanasiast

Horny/sex obsessed financially-sorted white dudes are not an oppressed minority.

Overzealous Euthanasiast

Being disabled does not exempt you for being made fun of and This is not that

Christian Finne

Making fun of porn convention humans is Totally legit mean spirited fun the podcast format is made for This

Christian Finne

Y’all should try a danish porn convention

Christian Finne

Sorry Sean was that response to my comment? Not sure I understand…

Peter Little

As for the ‘I met him at a porn convention’… going back to the awkward likely neurostypical young man- when asked what he wanted in a girlfriend, he didn’t say ‘big breasts, ‘ or whatever shallow thing. He said ‘someone who is nice to me.’ I know comedy is hard and hit and miss, but I’m hoping the hosts have enough compassion and self reflection to be able to admit they missed the mark by highlighting mocking a disabled person

Peter Little

Not only are those people terrible, they’re also terrible podcasters. You simply cannot have a dozen guests at the same time on one episode of a podcast.

No Relation to Henry

This series is one of those infrequent occasions where it feels like QAA is punching down (sorry for the hackneyed phrase), similar to the episode on the spiritualists of Mt Shasta. Haha look at those losers.

paul hays

Here’s a suggestion for a future segment: Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy 2001 R 1h 17m https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0282856/ I saw the X rated version (not XXX) when it came out at Angelika.

Awakening Wonk

Seminars

Christian Finne

They should’ve covered the awful genre of YouTube podcasters who have pornstars on their shitty video formats

Nathan Maidlow

incredible that my mom would find some other place to be while i'm looking for milfs at the porn convention. why does she think this is weird?

Carter Kriss

manifesting a genre of tweets where there's pornstars texting like "yes, mom, i met him at a convention. yeah, he's a keeper!" with a photo of one of those kubrickian stare dudes

Carter Kriss

Don’t bash therapy gecko

Sean

I almost feel bad for that guy. I feel like this is a weird cry for help 😭.

Ky Rus

At first I was really confused by you mentioning Julian's eyes and adding a hashtag, but I kept listening. This is the best comment.

Ky Rus

I’m not speaking to the entire podcast, just that specific part. I quit listening after that.

Peter Little

I’m surprised no one between the hosts editors and production picked that up honestly. As soon as I heard the persons voice alongside the situation described I thought about the conversations I’ve personally had with the adult parents and caregivers of differently abled adults in grappling with how to give them a whole life in the midst of significantly restricted circumstances and possibility. Some civilized countries actually employ sex therapists for this reason. You were in the United States. All care and all sexuality are now commodities or potential commodities.. so how do we expect to see these adults trying to get their needs met?

Peter Little

Funny how you mention seeing like three women who were fans at the convention and the chick flick sub. My husband asked me why women don't like porn, and I answered with the obvious, but I also mentioned that women do like erotica in written form in my experience. I would like to think the female equivalent to the porn con is a convention for trashy fictional romance or NSFW fanfic. I wonder if there is a con like that and what the man to woman ratio is at those places if they do exist.

Ky Rus

When he said my mother disappeared somewhere- it IS because it was awkward for that mother, who wasn’t a creep or a weirdo…but was doing the best to fully care for a disabled loved one

Peter Little

It may not be the best categorization but most people are familiar with autism?

Peter Little

the mother of someone who talks so awkwardly and looks and sounds like an overgrown child who takes that child to a porn convention? That’s the mother who so loves her child who is so socially awkward or immature or neuroatypical or disabled that they will be very unlikely to experience consensual sexual contact with other adults or inside the context of sex work

Peter Little

And one of you asks “whose mother takes them to a porn conference?” From the entirety of the situation you present im willing to venture a confident guess.

Peter Little

Hey folks. I’ve enjoyed the show for awhile now and find all of you to be thoughtful and sophisticated… in the middle of the episode everyone is taken aback by the guy at the porn conference whose mother brought him there. Everyone enjoyed laughing at that guys goofy voice (noting he sounded younger than he did, seemed. Dry socially awkward, and you noted he needed to have ID to get in…

Peter Little

Overzealous Euthanasiast

Please have Hesse or seeking derangements as a whole on for one of these episodes omg

Jackson

When I first made my Twitter account in 2008 I used something very close to my name and after a few months I left it idle until I went back in 2014 and found dozens of men associated my account with a porn star that seems not to have had a Twitter account, and based on the tweets they'd sent me over those few years I don't blame her (I immediately changed my @ to make the weirdness stop)

Sarah W

Oh yeah the DnD youtube community has declared a fatwah on Liv for her targeted harassment of JoCat

Jason

Was kinda bummed they didn't bring up "Joe goes" when talking about YouTube people that go to these conventions. Seeing Joe's demeanor shift through the interviews and leaning into the culture, then going dark, only to post a final video about how he realized he wasn't a he kinda felt like a perspective that would've worked out with previous qaa topics. I feel like Lily would've been a great guest, but there's less room to point and laugh at her getting sissy pilled I guess. Either way I hope y'all's day is as beautiful as you are.

Moosifur

It's always a bummer when these episodes end. Great job again

Garth Hansen

Porn convention guys are the exact same guys that are in the local weather girls comment section.

CHACHOO

Once I rolled up to a red light with my windows down, and the car next to me was treated to the sound of Julian screaming something about cocks. It was magic.

Sarah Wolf

Also, please never to reading internet comments with original typos. Never fails to make me crack up.

Sarah Wolf

Yeah, I couldn’t finish it

Orlando

This is the first episode that is actually ENRAGING me. The “ironic “ YouTube guys interviewing performers are horrible- they’re all clowning on women who are there doing work promoting product, meeting fans, networking, etc. They’re not there to hang out and help these assholes create their own content. It absolutely sucks.

Sarah Wolf

It’s weird just the first part “who are the other half-haters?” Like I get the joke but it’s probably the other half are people working in the industry? My sister goes to AVN for work and I just visited her and met some of her friends who she met at AVN. Maybe people don’t realize this but porn is an industry with tons of people working in it-lawyers, accountants, editors, filmmakers, set designers. Because of the stigma against sex work these normal jobs often need specialize industry associations to navigate the legal and social elements. Anyway love the podcast and hosts and that’s why I know they take comments like these into consideration-no hate !

Westbrook Evans

if you’re looking for guests with lived experience in this may I suggest this podcast by former porn star ? I didn’t listen yet and feeling hopeful Julian and liv do a good job but I always worry when I see content abour sex work without sex workers. Anyway the host of this show is funny and talks to ppl who experienced the industry :). https://art19.com/shows/ex-virgin

Westbrook Evans

4 out of 4 on guests for this series, no misses

Bonnot

Hey, guys, Just wanted to say I hope y'alls day is as beautiful as your podcast. Julian, I love your eyes! Liv, you're one of my favorite stars! #rockon

Fuzzert

Y'all. Today was the day I learned that "porn convention" does not mean a pornography industry trade convention. Take a moment to consider the decade plus I have spent just assuming that those words meant a place for adult entertainment professionals go to network and attend seminars on various things like I don't know, personal safety, regulatory environment, and film editing software. I'm honestly pretty disappointed.

Cheerful Squid

I’ve known plenty of guys (dated one even) who would employ that kind of “I’m trying to be sensitive and respectful of you”/I’d cuddle you so hard tactic. Every last one of them was a creep.

Sei B

Well There’s Your Pervert: A Podcast with slides

Fellow Worker

Episode 4 of me forgetting the intro to Perverts and blasting it on my car speakers in my parking lot…

BBQPanda

Liv's mean voice message in the intro had me rolling

Chris

A great Guys episode but not enough flubs!

Fellow Worker

The “porn to fascism” pipeline…Julian and Liv can’t escape 😂

LaLaLaLuci

Opening of the episode had major Max Payne vibes

Mike H

Have to agree, been enjoying the show, but in the know interviews would make it way better

Molly Long

I really want to get into this series, but it’s a swing and a miss for me. Maybe if they had different guests besides other men who host podcasts (thank g for Liv)? I can imagine an episode on the Porn Convention that interviewed one or two of the sex workers there, for example, and that would’ve been so interesting. Or even the gooners—what if you interviewed someone who self IDs? Can still crack jokes and/or be critical, but then you have substance, something new. I can’t tell what Perverts wants to be: if it’s research into sexual subcultures and freaky cul-de-sacs, or light and surface level comedy for people from the outside. It’s not really hitting either for me—feels like the guests they invite on are just there to try and be funny, not offer new insights or share knowledge. So much of what makes QAA and their spinoffs great IS the humor—I cry laughing sometimes—but it’s earned, not just people on the outside making fun without context, research, or their own skin (so to speak) in the game. I think Liv and Julien are both so great (Julien, I’m very glad you made it through this year), and hope they find their groove.

Orlando

Perverts needs slides

ploob

Already shaping up to be an insane episode, great work as always! If you guys do an episode on swingers (& please do), please get Bryan Quinby & Chris James from Guys on, that would be a dream episode! They watch so much swingers content, they'd be perfect

sibir

This is gonna be a tough listen, isn’t it?
