That historically linked connection between health food movement and vegetarianism and the right seems to ring true of a recent experience. Met a whole group of largely I believe vegetarian antivaxxers (or as I like to say, pro disease) who were young, spiritual cis women who were into some dubious gender essentialist ('sacred feminine and sacred masculine') ideas. One shared a text online about how we just need to eat whole organic foods to bring about the world we want. I didn't stick around them long. The reason the term vegan was coined in the mid 1940's in the UK is because lacto-ovo-vegetarians had coopted the term vegetarian, as far as I'm aware. There are long heritages of vegan or vegetarian foodways outside of Eurocentric cultures. India, China, many parts of Africa. Ital. Ireland was also largely vegetarian until it was colonised by the British. So John H Kellogg can't lay claim to all those lineages!

Have either of you read much about disordered eating, dieting or orthorexia? I think there are some strong parallels between the intense anxiety people experience as they exert more and more control over their eating habits and the link you described between anxiety and "succeeding" at no fap. It would make quite a lot of sense if these anxiety patterns were similar or followed the same pathways, given that sex and food are essential needs for all animals (and most people), so limiting either would be hard and stressful, and probably requires the same obsessive vigilance. As always, this was as disturbing as it was fascinating. Thanks!
