Premium Episode 208: My Fellow Americans Movie Night

To commemorate the indictment of Donald Trump, Jake searched high and low for a movie involving the arrest of a president. The closest he got was the 1996 film "My Fellow Americans." The screwball conspiracy road comedy stars Jack Lemmon and James Garner as rival ex-presidents, clearly stand-ins for George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, who are forced to team up in order to expose a frame job. Along the way they evade murderous NSA agents and meet ordinary Americans. Jake guides us through this mostly forgotten relic of the 90s which somehow combines a hokey, naive vision of American politics with a maximally cynical portrayal of deep state agents shaping history behind the scenes.

Several years ago, I was bored enough to watch this movie when it was streaming free on Prime. This is the kind of road trip buddy comedy that appeals to seniors. It’s exactly the kind of thing that would be in heavy rotation at a retirement home. So when you’re trying to figure out why it’s so nonsensical and inconsistent, just remember what your grandparents were like.

Secret tunnels put in by JFK? No it's a fact. We should bake it ... 😂 😂 best quip ever

C’mon

I watched this.I like Lemmon and missed Matthau. It was an awful film, all over the shop, but the part in the car with the family was the most powerful bit by far. However it had no pretensions and was just a grumpy old men buddy movie, so no surprise there. I have started watching Tommy Boy at your suggestion it was a better film and I am not convinced so far

Did you guys really stop short of covering the twist at the end???

I HATE movies like this, for some reason they always make me super depressed, no clue why

Who the hell can mention Ichi The Killer and Bill and Teds Adventure in the same paragraph?

He won his first big tournament in 1997. But he was a child prodigy long before that. He was on Ed Sullivan.

Adam 2

Shivvy

The VP isn't just supposed to be Quayle, I'd say - it really feels like they're trying to make him Ford as well (e.g., hitting the bystander with a golf ball). That actually fits with Aykroyd being Nixon-esque, which I didn't really register when I watched it in my youth. The whole way it perceives politics is an odd time capsule - Republicans are stodgy, moral, naive, and greedy, while Democrats are clever, amoral, cynical, and licentious... but both are otherwise more-or-less the same. It's a POV straight out of the 80s that had already started to die with the rise of '94's Contract With America GOP and its subsequent WJC witch-hunting, but I'd say it hung on until 9/11, when it vanished overnight.

The only thing I remembered about this movie was the gay secret service sniper.

Lemmon is fucking money along with most of the cast in the film adaptation of Glengarry Glen Ross released a few years prior.
