Episode 223: Attending the 15 Minute Cities Oxford Protest with Annie Kelly

A very long episode out in the field! Annie Kelly headed to Oxford (UK) to attend a protest against "15 Minute Cities" and figure out how boring city planning issues became a fresh vehicle for the so-called "freedom movement" and its wide collection of attached conspiracy theories. These include fears of "climate lockdowns", a New World Order government instituted by Klaus Schwab, adrenochrome, aliens, bug eating, "Britcoin" as a control mechanism, and much, much more.

Re: the intro, I also worked in a restaurant at 19 and through my 20s. I never took up smoking but I took "smoke" breaks when I wanted them. Just go outside and chill out for 5 minutes. It helped that I had an "I dare you to make a bigger deal out of this" attitude about it.

How may wills will Will Smith smith if Will Smith will smith wills

Especially the dude at the roughly 50 minute mark spouting off against the climate crisis. He knows better than thousands of scientists who have dedicated decades of their lives to measuring the harm climate change has done? Of course he does! Because he watched a few YT videos!

I'd love for it to take hold in America. But I am damn sure there would be this level of opposition to it.

I’m still devastated by Laurence Fox’s ideologies. I used to refer to him as Super Fox but now I just call him moron. #dsHathawaymyass

I showed a four minute clip of this ep to my partner. Good news: she's now a listener Bad news: she insists her new pet name is National Baby

This whole edition, but the Auto-Q in particular, beautifully exemplifies the off-putting self-importance of so many conspiracists. Why do they feel entitled to be so pompous and patronizing, when all they’ve really done is memorize YouTube videos and suchlike?

She was intriguing! It was interesting to hear that she pins the (so called) 'Spanish' flu on advancements in technology, rather than emerging from our relationship to animals, spread also by war. But I understand that that the debate amongst epidemiologists etc about when the 'Spanish' Flu pandemic ended has been going on until recently, as the effects have been seen playing out in the bodies of people alive at the time, so one argument has been that the 'Spanish' Flu pandemic ended when that generation died out. So far off in some ways, seemingly so close to the scientific debate on that point about the duration and consequences.

I go into Oxford a lot as I live just outside. I thought I’d check the map of the low emission / charging zones. No one drives on those streets anyway!! It’s right in the centre; you haven’t been able to park there for years and no one would drive through that area to take kids to school . I imagine it will affect businesses - who presumably can get a pass- and parents dropping off their kids at colleges at Oxford university. What a fuss about nothing. I can understand some concerns over LTNs but that’s a different issue .

isn't it amazing how easily Americans and Brits assume they're immune to immigration law (even as they act like undocumented folks or migrants are some scourge in their own countries?)

Isaac Suárez

Tell people they are gonna have to pay to drive on city streets, and this is the conclusion people come to? It's crazy how close these folks are to connecting the dots to say class war, a Marxist critique or even a critique on capitalism to do anything remotely to stop climate change... Then there lizard brains just go to lizard people and global socialism lol. Y'all were so close.

The woman who talked about running off to Argentina for eleven years… I live in Brazil and have been in Argentina, frequently, for almost 20 years. We had DSL before the States and Britain did, and wireless internet, too, simply because we didn’t have the legacy telephone systems you guys do. So I had to laugh at the idea of heading off to Argentina to get away from emails some 15 or so years ago. I was also intrigued by her complaint that she had to come back because of governmental corruption. Now, to be fair, there is a hell of alot of that down here (to also be completely fair, the U.K. was the country making the most appearances in the Panama Papers). What there ISN’T is government corruption fucking with the lives of some Brit expat living out in the ass end of nowhere. Having heard this sort of accusation many times, however, what I suspect happened is that Annie’s interviewee blithely supposed that, because she was British, she could ignore Argentine immigration laws. This finally caught up to her several years in when she stuck her nose out of her internet refuge and discovered that she was a decade or more irregular on her paperwork and thus owed massive fines. This, of course, happens in the UK and the US as well. I have seen many foreigners from those two countries fuck themselves down here, however, ignoring immigration laws and digging a huge hole for themselves. When it turns out that there is no way out except paying a huge fine, many of them then try to find a corrupt federal police officer to “help them out”…. And then, of course, they are REALLY fucked because they have brought themselves to the attention of a by-god corrupt cop and he can screw them whenever he likes. I’d lay dollars to donuts that something similar happened to Annies’ interviewee.

I came from a part of England that, for decades, has seen a rise of an "alternative" green lifestyle. When I go back now, the protestors are out in the High Street leafleting about this-or-that conspiracy theory. After getting all their traffic calming and 20mph zones now they start baking the modern version of those as a global conspiracy.

This makes me so sad. I live in Germany and I can live in a 20 minute village. It is absolutely feasible and they are taking it from themselves.
