Episode 185: Attending the Anti-LGBT Hate Rally at Disney Studios

From an "OK Groomer" meme on 4chan to mainstream republican talking point. We explore the right wing panic related to the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill passed by Governor Ron De Santis in Florida. We also head out into the field to attend the Sean-Feucht-led anti-LGBT hate rally in front of Disney Studios in Burbank, California on April 6th.

Episode 185: Attending the Anti-LGBT Hate Rally at Disney Studios

I’m committing on this one as a Patron because this literally is the one episode I can’t do; this particular panic is so hollowing, disgusting, deplorable, it’s an attack on my LGBT friends and my animation community and I just can’t stomach it. My profession is already insanely disrespected and now it’s a cultural war Lightning rod from truly the shittiest people this country has and…I cant

Ryan, I honestly don’t know of anyone who holds that belief bc it is nonsensical. Some people, however believe interracial marriage is a sin, much like they believe same sex marriage is a sin or “acting on” homosexuality is a sin. None of those beliefs are hate speech. Again, calling for the murder of interracial couples or same sex couples *would* be hate speech. That is not what is happening here. People are expressing their belief that being gay is a sin. It is a belief millions of people hold. It is not hate speech even though it’s a shitty belief.

Katherine

"People believing that being gay is 'wrong' is not hate." I want to volunteer this idea, what if someone was to bel;ieve "being black is wrong"? Would you consider that hate speech? I imagine you would so why is there a difference between condemning blackness and condemning homosexuality that makes one hate speeh and the other not?

My brother-in-law is a child molester. He's also a pastor. He's been molesting children for well over 40 years. I'm not sure why the right-wing xtians believe that grooming only occurs in same sex molestation. Do they think it's somehow less awful if it is male/female? Do they think that his grand-daughters (or me) are any less damaged by his predatory behavior? Funny (not ha-ha) thing is, he is very anti-gay. I somehow think that the xtians would not find what he did as awful as if he had molested boy children. Their issue is all about gay people. Shame on them and their bigotry. And by that, I mean f*ck them!!!

Yeah just got around to listening to it. Really loved the Jake bits and how Julien and Jake played off each other in this one.

DukeNukem64x

They're calling gay and trans people pedophiles. That's one of the worst things you can call someone, and is generally viewed as an open invitation to do violence upon them. As someone else noted, hate speech is basically always an opinion.

Caroline J

Millions of people of multiple faiths hold the belief it’s wrong to be gay. If everything is hate speech, nothing is hate speech. We need to reserve the term for actual hate speech, like calling for gay people to be killed. That would be hate speech.

just because a belief is widely held, does not prevent it from being hate speech. look at how people in the southern usa talked about black folk in the 1800s - it's abso-fucking-lutely hate speech and it was hate spech then too

Aldeeenii

Agreed.

Amen

having an opinion is actually 99% of what hate speech is i'm sorry to inform you

Beliving it is wrong to be jewish or black is hate speech, or, at the very least, deeply bigoted. The language of hatred exists on a spectrum, but certaintly these views of intolerance and disgust and invalidity towards a fundamental aspect of a person's being constitute such.

Even though it wasn't the most pleasant episode. This one was one of the funniest ever.

I guess i’ll go against the grain and say that i, an atheist leftist bisexual, think this reporting is badly done. I may not agree with believing it’s “wrong” to be gay but i recognize many many religious people — across many faiths — do. I was shocked y’all called this belief hate speech. Their belief expressed simply isn’t hate speech. I also thought it was disingenuous to not talk about the whole reason there was a protest: because disney officials had a leaked meeting in which they stated they wanted 50% of characters in upcoming disney movies to be either “lgbtq or poc.” It’s okay to point out that that’s an agenda. Again no value judgement but having an opinion either way is not hate speech.

Katherine

This is episode was a downer, things really haven’t changed at all.

Yes, Hail Satan!

Thank you. Y’all are my weekly reminder that it’s ok to be angry about stupidity but finding humor and trying to find a solution is the better path. Love your work, hail Satan, take care and be safe.

Ok, the woman with Lion/lamb story was ridiculous...she couldn't even keep her metaphors straight. "Lambert the Sheepish Lion" was an old Disney short that told the story of how a Lion grew up with a flock of sheep thinking they were his real family. It's a sweet story about finding a family among kind people, and ....just because you're born a Lion, that doesn't mean you have to be ferocious all the time. She totally f*cked up the story 😒

I write my phd on eugenics and constitutional courts, so I almost fell from my chair from excitement hearing about the miniseries! Amazing! 👏👏👏

Lumpentheorist

I'm not even half an hour into the podcast yet and my blood is already BOILING.

NerdgasmCharlie

Am I the only one who's seen Lambert: the sheepish lion cartoon like a million times as a kid??
