Premium Episode 137: Hidden Cold War History feat Vincent Bevins

The anti-communist crusade that defined the post-world-war-II period. We explore how the CIA and the US government worked to crush left-wing political progress in so-called Third World countries by forming an international coalition of anti-communists carrying out a program of mass-murder that spanned the globe. We speak to Vincent Bevins, journalist and author of 'The Jakarta Method', a book using thorough historical research and journalism to explore the cold war in a new light.

Y'all should make this one free bc it really explains how the gov is so cool with mass death being normalized now. Also, fuck the CIA.

notably ISIS exists specifically because the US spent the cold war fucking with the middle east to deliberately destabilize it. they're all the US's babies.

Conspiracy theories are not only used by isolated groups but has and is used by governments to implement imperialism on a global scale. The world should never forget the mass murderer of communists in Indonesia, may they rest in peace.

To me, I’m listening and I’m thinking “damn, the US government and CIA did some fucked up shit.” But then I paused and thought about ISIS, and how, if the US viewed the communist threat the way They view ISIS, it’s understandable in a way to do this. But then I think “we’ll thats fucked because communism ain’t ISIS.” BUT… having toured s-21 in Cambodia, I can’t rule out some communist regimes were absolutely heinous. So given then two choices, what was right? I was watching wild wild country and somewhere I heard Osho say that the world wasn’t ready for communism, capitalism needed to run its course. Perhaps the power grab and oppression in the name of communism is a reflection of this thought. Shit, I dunno. I’m pretty drunk but I LOVE the show guys and think it’s great where you are taking it.

In regards to the piece about United Fruit Co. Is there a reason why you didn’t bring up Edward Bernays? He coined the term PR and likely had a lot of influence on the campaign to brand the new Guatamalen president as a communist. I didn’t read all the comments so I’m not sure if this was mentioned already. Thank you all for the hard work

The Devils Chessboard and Washington Bullets are two great places to start. The later is a very short snappy read.

The constant limpwristed takes from you guys on the Michigan kidnapping plot are nauseating. We already have an entire media apparatus of pussy liberals being gleefully soft on chuds, can we please be spared the same nonsense from you guys? I don't care if *all but one* of the fuckers were FBI! No one should! If you believe you know about a political plot to harm/kidnap/murder someone and you *don't* call the authorities- guess what? You're a conspirator! You go to jail! Ffs, stop embarrassing yourselves. Almost as bad as Julian and Jake on spygate before Travis joined the pod, s m h

"The Brothers" by Stephen Kinzer about the Dulleses gave me an introduction to just how much shit the CIA did and how the Dulleses were behind or part of so much of it. Informative, but definitely has its weaknesses. It has a pretty stupid concluding chapter that comes off like someone arguing we shouldn't take down Confederate statutes because they're part of our history. "The Jakarta Method" sounds much better and less America-centric.

Excellent episode.

One of the best episodes and one of the most interesting guests to appear on the show. Kudos !

Much appreciation, I’m definitely gonna check that out.

The podcast Behind the Bastards delves pretty deeply into this in several episodes. Their Dulles Brothers episodes provide a good overview. https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/part-one-how-the-dulles-brothers-82673758/

WOW. So much in one episode. Any resources you can share to listeners who want to delve deeper into what you touched on in this episode?
