"Anything but this, please" -Jake, sealing his own fate

Brando

It only came up briefly, but I think Jake's comment about Laura's utter lack of empathy (in the clinical sense) is important to talk about. This might be more widely understood now (4 years later in Qanon's America), but if you look closely at the way conservatives communicate on social media and apparently experience the world, a complete absence of human empathy is a component you see again and again in most of these people. Everything from the unbelievably cruel ideological core of conservative politics to the startling lack of creativity (the One Joke) and questionable "conservative comedy" (usually over-the-top mimicry like dressing in diapers to own the libs or plain airing of grievances), in my opinion, is a reflection of their inability to see the world from the point of view of another human being. I believe they are not able to create art for this reason, and I have noticed that they often cannot process metaphor at all. Ironically, they do not see other individuals as human beings, and they go through their entire lives without access to this critical aspect of the human experience. I think that American culture (hyper capitalism) has selected for these traits and allowed (maybe insisted on) them to propagate through this horrible world it has created, where individuals with such a defect—no empathy; fundamentally cannot comprehend the social contract—would have been otherwise removed from or reeducated within a healthy cooperative society.

Did Jake refer to red xiii as rex? Revealing that he named the dog rex in his playthrough and internalized that as his name forever?
