People were so hopeful that technology would make great leaps by then, but I guess while the military was making super soldier suits and invisibility cloaks, nature still kicked our collective asses. So many conspiracy theories never make sense to me because so often, reality demonstrates how people with any kind of power don't know what the hell they're doing, or obviously just don't have the control conspiracy-minded people want to think they have.
