Premium Episode 32: Iraqi Dinar Scam

The lady that wrote about their family being "back on their feet" when they finally have the possibility to cook in a proper kitchen 6 years after Katrina really broke me. I hope it was fake and not the story of someone who actually did an all in bet on a scam. -_-

I was deployed to Iraq from 06-08. Most of us participated at least a bit. From $50 to a couple hundred dollars. But there were limits to what could be brought home through customs. I had probably about a hundred dollars worth at one point then whittled it down to one of each denomination then lost it all in a move at some point. My thought was there was a high probability I would be back in two years. If any revaluation occurred I could exchange it back. If not I could spend it as dinar. And if you buy the dinar from the military pay office on base, there was no additional cost. You got the actual exchange rate. The real grift that we had to be careful of (and I mean it wasn’t hard) was people trying to sell Sadaam era dinar. After we invaded in 2004 and removed Hussein from power, his currency, which was plastered with his face, was no longer recognized. This also meant anyone who “invested” prior to 2004 suddenly had their nest egg go up in smoke. So, there is a third option you didn’t mention. Iraq’s parliament and economy collapse requiring a new issuing of currency.
