Sandals Bueller is a well-meaning, well-intentioned, extremely alienated man. Over the course of Cape Escape 1 we witnessed how he was holding onto baggage from his family's past, and how he's always been trying to seek validation and absolution from the world itself. He's a sad, lonely man who misses the trees around him for the forest, and despite achieving his goals, Sandals begins Cape Escape 2 lonelier and more isolated than ever, hollowed out by his pursuit of safety and freedom from the nefarious plans of Ms. Potatoes and those who seek to exploit the other side for power in our world.

Sandals's sense of self has been slowly eroded since his childhood. The things he cared about always felt far away. Everything he liked kept him from people. Even in his pursuit of the things he cared about he found himelf surrounded by people who never quite saw him, or things, the way he did. And so he shaved those aspects away to better fit himself into their mold. Sandals has been shaped by the world, folded into a new form by its needs and not his own. Maven has been telling him for years to focus on the things immediately around him. If only he would listen.
