TL NOTE: I have also included some chapters that were only in the Light Novel, so the chapter is longer than usual. Enjoy.
Shopping with Emmy was fun.
Really, it was a lot of fun.
It was my first experience going around the stores with a girl, but I never thought it would be this enjoyable.
… But this wasn’t a date, was it?
First, Emmy and I headed to an old clothing store.
There she bought about 30 pieces of clothing in various sizes for kids.
Next, she went to a hardware store and bought frying pans, ladles, knives, and other cooking utensils.
“Let’s see, next is… Ah, the general merchandise store!”
At the general merchandise store, we bought daily necessities such as tableware and cleaning tools.
We also stopped at a grocery store and a butcher shop to buy foodstuffs, but the number she bought was so huge she definitely won’t consume it alone.
By estimate, it would take about half a month if the two of us were to consume it all by ourselves.
Finally, we went to a bedding store and bought about twenty sheets and five mattresses.
“I am so thankful that Alf is here. It’s not easy to buy these many things alone… And it costs a lot of money to have them moved.”
All of those items were carried in my [Storage Unit].
In this world, there are people who have storage skills, albeit rare, so it doesn’t matter if I use them openly.
But it’s still a rare skill, so Emmy was pretty surprised at it at first.
So yeah, I’m just a luggage handler rather than a lover on a date.
I don’t mind being a luggage handler, but this is definitely not Emmy’s personal shopping, is it?
“All right, I think I’ve got everything I need. Let’s go!”
I was too embarrassed to ask Emmy what she was shopping for, so I followed her silently as she walked with great enthusiasm.
We walked down the main street from a relatively lively area lined with stores. Eventually, the number of stores dwindled, the number of people decreased, and we ended up in a quiet – or rather deserted – residential area.
Emmy stopped in front of a large house in the middle of the street.
“Thank you very much for your help,” she said upon reaching our destination. “We’re here.”
“Wow…”
I couldn’t help but let out a gasp when I saw the large mansion surrounded by a stone wall as tall from where I was standing.
It was a two-story house, a majestic building with a good combination of stone and wood.
The garden was large enough to fit a 400-meter track, and the house was probably the size of a small elementary school.
Although some parts weren’t well maintained, this was a building that could be called a mansion no matter how one looked at it.
Is it possible that… Emmy is a noblewoman?
“Oh, it’s big sis!”
As I was thinking this, I heard a child’s voice coming from the garden.
“It’s really you, Emmy!”
“Welcome home, big sister!”
A dozen or so children came running toward Emmy, enough for me to wonder where they had come from.
“Hello, everyone!”
And Emmy greeted the children in a friendly manner.
“Gyaaah!?”
As I watched Emmy and the children, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my shin and let out a pitiful scream.
I looked down to see a boy poised at the waist, and apparently, I had been kicked in the shin by this kid.
Benkei’s weak spot seems to be a holy knight’s weak spot as well, and even though I was only kicked by this child, I ended up crouching, holding my legs in my arms.
“Hey, Barum, what are you doing?”
“Ow ow ow…”
Holding my pained shin, I looked at the child named Barum.
I don’t know why, but he is giving me a hostile look.
“Emmy, get away from him! He’s suspicious!”
Barum stood between the rushing Emmy and me, pointing at me and declaring, “You must be a bad guy!”
I had never been mistaken for a suspicious person in my previous life, so it was even a greater shock to me that I am now accused as such in this life. All the more that I have now been reincarnated as a handsome man.
“What are you talking about, Barum? Alf here is a kind man who helped me with my shopping.”
“What?!”
Surprised by Emmy’s words, Barum glared at me with even more hostility.
“I see… you’re a fraud, then! What in the world are you doing deceiving Emmy?”
Barum was so intent on denouncing me that he didn’t notice the figure approaching from behind, and he was hit with a fist on his head.
“What are you talking about, you little shit?”
The person who gave Barum a fist was an old woman dressed like a priestess.
The priestess’s clothes were more modest than Alma’s, and the coloring was a little more faded.
The old woman was also wearing a veil, and her eyes peering out from under it were quite sharp.
“What are you doing, you old far… hieee!”
Barum protested as he held his beaten head, but the old woman glared back at him, and he let out a short scream and slumped down.
She turned her sharp gaze on me, but her expression soon became mellow.
“I see that Emmy has been in your good care, young man.”
Saying this, the old woman walked toward me with firm steps.
I stood up, trying not to stay in the squatting position forever and enduring a slightly less painful shin, and the old woman held out her hand.
“Nice to meet you,” she began introducing herself. “My name is Vilma, and I am the director of this orphanage.”
“Oh, it’s nice to meet you too. My name is Alfred.”
I took Vilma’s hand and nodded lightly.
“It’s bad etiquette to stand here to talk with our guests. Even more now that our guest is a great benefactor. Come on in.”
After that, Vilma led us into the orphanage, and we talked over a cup of tea in the study of the mansion, which is now the director’s office.
From there, I was told that this place was originally a nobleman’s mansion, but the head of the family and his heirs were all killed in the war, and the remaining women left the town, relying on their husband’s parents’ household instead of staying in this mansion that is too big for them to handle.
The mansion was donated to the church at that time, and now they are using it as an orphanage.
By the way, the orphanage is under the jurisdiction of the God of Charity, so Xaneela and Alma are not involved in it.
“So Emmy is also…?”
“Yes. Although she is on her own now, she grew up here, too. Her father was a Half-elf, her mother was a human, and both were great adventurers. Her mother went to war with her father, but both of them never returned. If the war had lasted a few more years, I’m sure that this child would have gone to the battlefield as well.”
