I had a similar situation recently, where our oldest cat had an infected canine tooth on her bottom jaw and required a specialist to remove. It cost a pretty penny, but she recovered well and is happily eating. Unfortunately it didn't resolve her other health issue that was also discovered (kidneys going bad), so we're only delaying the inevitable.
