The problem is that Postmodernism describes a bunch of different things and the thing that is most addressed when somebody namedrops the name "Postmodern" is actually a boogeyman that has small overlaps with the actual concepts but is ultimately pointless. The first instance of "postmodernism" actually refers to an architectural style (nobody means that), the Marxist concept of Postmodernism is a specific Jamesonian Label, by far not all Marxists subscribe to that. Finally: The closest actual correspondence is the circle around Lyotard who wrote a study for some institution in Quebec. The main idea being - and thats also the common core of many of the philosophical concepts of postmodernism - that the "big narratives" have ended: there is not ONE history, ONE reason, ONE somethingsomething ... we must see things through a variety of lenses that may not be able to be unified. In fact Lyotard goes as far as to claim that they cannot possibly be unified and that to do so would result in terror. When people talk about postmodernism they often mean to vaguely gesture at a variety of ideologies that are allegedly without values or not believing in truth or what have you. They furthermore often just mix it with "Poststructuralism". (Another French theory from the years you mentioned). It's... it's all a mess, really.
