American midwives are nurses who go to two/three years of extra school to become midwives, it’s a nursing specialty. They are almost always affiliated with some sort of hospital or medical system. I think y’all are thinking of doulas who are not medically trained in any way and are support people during birth, they aren’t supposed to offer medical advice or opinion, just help the mother advocate for herself and what she wants. They aren’t usually affiliated with a hospital. A midwife usually won’t sign off on attending a home birth unless she’s been caring for the mom throughout pregnancy and the mom has been cleared by her (and sometimes also an obstetrician) to be safe for a home birth. A doula has no such qualms or restrictions on her scope of practice, they are very un-regulated. Congratulations Chris and Arielle on a healthy baby and a healthy mom!
