Weekly Journal (September 8th)

Hey gang! I'd like to pick your brains today. I'm currently finishing up with the Bloodborne Old Hunters DLC and I've been treated to a handful of... frankly masterclass boss fights. Ludwig was a heartbreaking little glimpse into the perseverance of humanity. The fight against Lawrence was hellish and calculated. This one against Mergo's Wet Nurse from the base game might be one of my all time favorite boss fights FromSoft has done simply because of how well it was teased and how effective the buildup to it was before the fight ever actually began.

Which brings me to my question! What are some of your favorite boss fights in gaming? Specifically, which ones had you on the edge of your seat simply from the anticipation? -i.e. you were captivated before the fight even started? Why?

I ask because I've had an idea for a video for awhile now that I think I'd like to crack the seal on. These Bloodborne bosses have activated something in me and this next topic (if I choose to do it, which, I'm leaning that way) will have a TON of examples across lots of game genres.

Finishing up Bloodborne this week, I have Maria and Orphan of Kos left, then onto the final boss. Look for the twitch stream over on twitch.tv/daryltalksgames! I'm doing it live 😈

Have a great week everyone!

I would have to say the boss that I anticipated the most was Consort Radahn from the Elden Ring DLC. Personally, while it was extremely challenging, the thing that made it super tense wasn't from the game but the absolute insane online hype. Everywhere I looked for about a week there was an edit or rant about this boss and it built this insane image in my head.

My most anticipated moment from recent memory was fighting Ganondorf for the first time in TOTK. I was hot off the Lightning Temple in Gerudo Town, which served its sleight of hand more than I'd like to admit. However, it prepared me for the upcoming fight against Ganondorf at Hyrule Castle. Then he laid a plot twist on half the game's story, and I was SOLD. Our boy Link deserved a break after those two fights, and so did I...but damn did it make me feel like I achieved something special. It was truly an extraordinary example of a game ramping up in intensity and plot relevance.
