This might have been one of the best discussions you all have ever had on this podcast. You each revealed so much about yourselves. Thank you for sharing this.

It's not the fact that you have to talk about the feeling of dying by suicide (terminology has changed, also a licensed therapist here), it's the fact that you have to be vulnerable about YOU feeling that way and why YOU are feeling that way. Yes, people talk about everything to everyone (maybe), but it's the fact that you are now sitting in the seat and speaking first person. ACA ethical codes, if my client states to be that they have a plan to die by suicide and I find them clinically sane, I cannot involuntary commit that client, I could be sued or have my license under investigation. That client has made the decision in their life, clear headed in a way. Hard to explain using text characters, but there are specific therapist/psychologist who specialize in end of life care, meaning either suicide prep or medically assisted suicide (those are mostly MDs and it's legal in a few states). I also think of it like this, we tell people to live for them, so we should tell people (within reason) to die for them as well. I do not believe in suicide, but also as a therapist, I am not ethically allowed to impose my personal beliefs onto a client. I am here to help them navigate the world through their lens and just accompany them in life. I do not give advice, I help them explore their options that they have laid out for themselves. However, great episode.
