Finished Paper Mario: The Origami King. An incredibly charming, if flawed game. The art direction with the world is absolutely amazing, with plenty of fun character writing. Not to mention a shit ton of music, including eurobeat even! But god damn do I not care for the combat. Now, to set the record, I also don't care for JRPG turn based combat either, so I'm cool with them exploring other ways instead of that for gameplay. But the issue with Origami King is that the puzzles for every single combat instance means you can't just casually smash buttons to get through them. You have to solve the puzzle or else the combat instance takes even longer. Then some of the boss fights made me feel plain dumb. Some of it was needing to memorize the route to set off a few triggers before attacking the boss, who will go and spin the field around a whole bunch to throw you off. You're trying to figure it out as a countdown timer clicks down. I'm not the fastest person in the world to solve these puzzles, so what winds up happening is I pay the toads in the audience 999 coins to help figure shit for me. Combat outside of the puzzle field was kinda fun, at least. Having to manuever around these giant paper mache creatures and hit a certain spot to lower their shield, then get a couple good hits in to blow them up. Regardless, it was fun going through the dialogue and exploring the world. It makes me wonder if a straight up adventure game would fit better with the Paper Mario universe. Go around and talk/interact with people/do some minigames instead of feeling the need to have some sort of battle system. If you can stomach the mediocre combat system, there's a very fun game to enjoy.
