The Old World is here, again, and nostalgia runs rampant.
We're running a super chill slow grow campaign over on the DISCORD. Every month I'll do a round-up of the work and elect a warlord of the month. We're setting challenges every 20th and the warlord of the month chooses the secondary challenge. For example, January was declaring your faction, and intention to paint. The bonus pledge was to complete a tester for the force. Feb will be building your first 500 points and painting them.
I loved the Fantasy World - it was my primary obsession with the Dark Elves. When it came to choosing a faction within this new Old, older World, I didn’t want to return to the well-trodden path.
The Dark Elves were a product of my age. 13, reading Malus Darkblade Comics. 13, and discovering Linking Park. 13, when the world was nothing but shades of black and misery.
This time around, I’m, going to joyfully participate in the misery of the World and collect WARRIORS OF CHAOS! Perhaps THE foundational faction of the Warhammer Universe, Chaos transcends space and time.
When we look back at Citadel’s back category we can put pins in their progression as a company by the nature of their Chaos releases. From the seminal Champion of Chaos to the mounted Archon through to the new Greater Daemons, Games Workshop’s growth as a company can be aligned with the growth of the chaos range.
The models are seminal, I have to give my take on them.
When I think of Chaos, I think 3/4th edition. Red Era Chaos Warriors, accompanied by all manner of degenerate creates of woe - beaten, dragon ogres, chaos dogs, spawn - it’s a visually striking army that can cohere to a theme, or split apart into many colour schemes.
It’s colourful. It’s interesting. It’s Chaotic.
4th edition - Thomas Prininn penned what I consider to be the greatest chaos book (in terms conceptualizing the rules and making it a practical play experience - realms of chaos was bonkers).
The idea was that you would purchase a character, and buy an equal to, or greater amount of warriors to serve as their warband. It's appealing to build an army this way. I won't get bogged down painting 'facless hordes' - instead I'll be painting retinues of warriors gathered around strong characters. It's modular.
BASING
Basing - Ion the world of vistas - old empires, lands ravaged by spells, tortured by the gods and unreality, ravaged by marauding tribes, civilizations built upon the bones of older, stranger ones - what do we do?
We put a bit of sand on a base, add some flock, add a tuft.
What a missed opportunity.
I was cleaning the dishes and a phrase struck me with the clarity of a baseball bat to the back of the head.

Upon being wounded unto death, Aenerion, Indraugnir takes his king to the island of the dead at the shrine of the Widowmaker. For leagues in any direction, lie the bones of vanquished armies.
That’s bad ass. That’s cool. That’s an opportunity.
And that's what this project is - an opportunity to collect a seminal faction in the Warhammer Universe.
