2025-06-02 15:54:00 +0000 UTCActually it didn't. The Rutles predate Spinal Tap, and of course Woody Allen's first movie, "Take The Money And Run" is also a "mockumentary". So is "Zelig" (1983).

Christopher Guest (who played Nigel) went on to make three more films inthis style: Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman and A Mighty Wind. It also probably inspired the Office, which in turn inspired other shows like Parks & Recreation and Veep. It's filled with minor famous people in many of the roles; one of my favorites is Paul Shaffer as the PR guy, who is best known for being David Letterman's band leader for decades. It's great that Coby recognized Michael McKean from Laverne & Shirley. Harry Shearer (the bass player) does about 50% of all supporting character voices in the Simpsons. One could analyze and discuss every minute of this movie. It's that packed full of references and details. And of course, Christopher Guest is married to Jamie Lee Curtis, so nicely done, Chris!
