High Tide, Chapter 61: Fire and Water

Yeah the Targaryens are just so done with the Velaryons. They won’t let any of their BS arguments fly. If they expand in any way, shape, or form again, it’s WAR. Besides the Velaryons would need to accept Pentos’ fealty anyway and you very much can reject that if you so choose.

Tertius711

Well it has the prestige required as one of the Free Cities even as we the audience consider it boring compared to Lys and Tyrosh since we have barely any details on Myr in comparison. That being said Myr’s location is prime central in the Triarchy and puts some distance between the Velaryons and Dorne and the Stormlands so better for security.

Tertius711

They could but the slaves would need to win the revolt first, and then do so, but even if that were to happen its just not going to happen, its been made pretty clear that the targs are 110% done with the Velaryons expansion and would most definetly intervene in such an event, doesn't matter if its technically not against their orders, the fact is that the targs have been pushed to the point where that type of legal shenanigan won't fly no matter if the law is followed or not, they don't want the velaryons expanding anymore and they don't care about reasoning or anything else they're just fed up and are putting their foot down, which the velaryons clearly realise as they themselves have quelled internal talks to expand furthur from their own loyal subjects because they know doing so right now would mean war immediately.

Why are the Velaryons moving to Myr? I tried looking up to see if there was anything special in the city but it's a bog standard post-Doom of Valyria settlement.

I wonder if they'll pull a Putin-Crumea sitch and "allow" Pentos to "swear" fealty to them (like how Crimea "voted" on annexation to Russia). Technically, they don't expand through conquest, so it shouldn't break the ruling Aemon made.

Why apologise. Battle mage is probably an accurate term. 1) Only the Zaldilaros Velaryons as Jace mentioned. Corlys and Viserra are learning too but they may be much less proficient than their children are. 2) Very effective. The Targaryens are not immune to fire and they do not themselves practice fire magic so they have only the innate Blood of the Dragon and dragonrider resistance which ain’t that much. Targaryens get burnt all the time OTL. Bloodfire OTOH is a magical flame that burns almost as hot as wildfire and dragonfire at peak (Jace and Baela were holding back to not hurt each other). So if the Targaryens take it head on, they’re dead lol. We shall see about Daeron and the Summer Islands. As I told that commenter, the Targaryens are still years away from the Summer Islands conquest.

A strong enough dragon could indeed fly for days on end and in any case the dragons can float on the ocean (I imagine their bones are pretty hollow like most birds are and air sacs and things like that plus big wings for floating). We know dragons can take off from the water so it’s not a problem. I’ve shown/mentioned this happening before in the story with Dreamfyre way back in Ch19 and Ch36.

Interesting chapter - especially method of reconcilation between Jace and Baela :) Nice to see them becoming skilled battle mages, sorry, I can't think other word to describe what they're doing :) By the way, two questions: 1. Is whole Velaryon family learning fire battle magic, or they're leaving it to younger generation? 2. How effective such magic flames would be against Targs? While they lack in access to training manuals, they're still Dragon Blood. The question is, is it just high resistance or nearly full invulnerability to fire? In relation to some previous comments, I hove some uneasy feelings that Daeron and his family will mix into upcoming Targs attack on Summer Isles. And if that's few years in future, such incident could be some unintentional excuse to start Dance.......

So do they make land every night? Can Shykos fly for days on end? Is Shykos landing in the ocean and sleep/floating? Sorry for being nit picky, but I’m curious on how it’s gonna work.

Robin

Laena will be flying around the ship at times. Daeron might even join her. Glad you liked the review of Essos. I was trying to think on how to organically bring it up and boom Daeron was the answer.

Tertius711

I’m a little unclear on Daeron and Laena’s traveling plans. Their daughters are on the ship with him and Laena will be flying later? Because dragon and ship do have different speeds. And I liked the review of the current situation on Essos.

Robin

The Targs are a few years off from invading the Summer Islands but fair enough I can see why you thought that way. As for how the Velaryons react to it and cause problems for the Targs, stay tuned.

Tertius711

Sorry but I don't think Daeron can visit Valyria. It's suicide. Even if he could get in, he would probably value his life enough to not try given how everyone else who went there died.

Tertius711

Daeron seems to be planning to head that way for his little adventure, so he may come in as the targs invade or start noticing them around the area more than they should be, either way, if he does notice then its a good opportunity, if not then its a missed one, but either way, if they don't end that conquest fast there's no way the velaryons won't try to stir more trouble and issues behind the scenes

Amerdism

I do not why but I want Daeron to visit Valyria and explore it if possible. The idea would not leave me.

Tushar Srivastav

What makes you say that?

Tertius711

Looks like the targs won’t have an easy, quiet or even uncontested conquest of the summer islands after all. It’ll be a good opportunity for the velaryons to bleed the targs of money, manpower and maybe even dragon riders.
