Hagrid is a half giant. His mom was a giant. His dad a normal wizard. In the books that reporter, Rita, finds out about it and tells everyone through the paper. Hagrid actually goes into hiding for a bit out of shame. Giants (and half giants) aren't trusted by wizards, he gets a lot of hate mail afterwards. He also gets a lot of former students telling him how.much they love him and dont care who his mom was. Madam Maxine (the headmitress of beauxbaton) is also a half giant.
