A Cosmic Rendition: Chapter 26
Added 2024-11-20 16:30:02 +0000 UTCClark tore through the upper atmosphere, the friction of reentry igniting his skin in a halo of fire. The world blurred around him as he pushed himself harder and faster, the thought of Lois being the only thing anchoring him. Below, her pod streaked across the sky like a falling star, tumbling dangerously, its exterior glowing red-hot from the descent.
The pod shuddered violently, its structural integrity nearing collapse. Through the viewport, Clark could see Lois’s face, a mix of fear and determination as she wrestled with the controls. She was fighting as always—unyielding and unbreakable, even in the face of imminent death. She wasn’t the one to go quietly, and neither would he.
He reached the pod in a flash, his fingers latching onto the scalding metal of its outer frame. The heat didn’t bother him, and with a grunt, he braced himself, adjusting his grip to slow its descent. The resistance was immense, the force of gravity and velocity testing even his Kryptonian strength, but he didn’t let go.
The pod slowed and steadied under his control. His arms were strained, every muscle taut as he guided it gently through the thickening clouds. The flames licking at the edges dissipated, revealing the pale blue of Earth’s sky. Finally, with a soft, controlled descent, he lowered the pod onto a grassy clearing just beyond a dense forest.
The hatch hissed open, smoke billowing as Lois stumbled out, coughing. She looked up, eyes wide, her hair disheveled, and her face streaked with sweat and soot. Before she could say a word, Clark was there, pulling her into his arms with a ferocity that would’ve crushed any other person.
Lois clung to him, her arms wrapping tightly around his neck. For a moment, she didn’t speak, letting herself sink into the safety of his embrace. Then, with a half-laugh, she pulled back just enough to look at him, her hands cupping his face.
“I knew you’d come,” she whispered, her voice trembling.
Their eyes met, and the world around them seemed to fade. The pressure of everything that surrounded them melted away in that brief moment. Without thinking, Clark leaned in, their foreheads brushing before their lips slammed together in a furious kiss.
It was desperate, unguarded, and filled with reassurance all at once. Lois kissed him back with the same intensity, her fingers tangling in his hair as if anchoring herself to him.
The kiss deepened, the world vanishing around them, as he grabbed her by the rear, and pulled her firmly against himself. Lois gasped into the kiss, feeling him hot and hard against herself, and her arms around his neck tightened as she pushed herself against him.
The hands grabbing her rear sank deeper into her flesh, and before she knew it, he had her lifted in the air. Her legs immediately wrapped around his waist, and she moaned when she felt his hardness against her core.
All the while, their lips kept moving together passionately, their tongues battling with an intensity they had never before. Their breaths were one, and so were their gasps as they furiously kissed each other, both losing themselves to the heat and emotions swirling between them after everything that had happened before.
Slowly, the kiss thawed, and they pulled back, regarding each other silently. Lois blinked, her lips parted, and her breath catching as reality suddenly slammed back into focus.
“Clark!” she began, but his hands slid up her back as he held her firmly against himself, cradling her securely against his chest.
“We don’t have time,” he said, his voice firm but laced with a lingering tenderness. “We’ll finish this later.”
He rose into the air effortlessly, the wind whipping around them as Lois clung to him, her arms tightening around his neck while her legs wrapped tightly around his waist. They both gazed at each other, love, lust, desperation, and every other emotion swirling in their eyes.
Slowly, their respective experiences kicked them in the backs and their eyes cleared, shining with determination. It was time to focus on what was the most important task right now.
Clark gave her a firm nod, and with that, he shot off into the sky, a streak of blue and red cutting through the air, carrying Agent Lane toward the fight that lay ahead.

The skies above the city had become a violent light show with dozens of drones exploding as more replaced them. Energy blasts crisscrossed between buildings as Tony Stark weaved through the chaos, the suit’s systems working in overdrive to track the overwhelming number of threats. He would have preferred if these were normal drones, but that would have been too much of an ask. These Kryptonian drones were more durable, faster, and more lethal than any they had on Earth.
The only solution he could see involved going inside, but that was another challenge on its own.
“JARVIS, give me a targeting solution on that cluster at two o'clock," Tony called out, his HUD lighting up with multiple threat indicators. The drones were learning, adapting to their standard attack patterns with frightening speed.
A civilian transport helicopter caught in the crossfire wobbled dangerously, its tail smoking. Tony banked hard left, repulsors firing in rapid succession to clear a path. "We've got civilians in the air! Someone get that chopper clear—"
Diana shot forward just as the pilot lost full control, barreling down in a spiral. She caught the chopper mid-spin and carried it over to a small clearing in the distance. The civilians stared at her wide-eyed, and with a small nod, she took off once again.
Tony fired another blast at an incoming horde when his HUD lit up with multiple threat indicators once again, but this time right behind him. Before he could turn around though, the familiar sound of heavy artillery cut through the chaos. "Did someone start a party without me?"
Tony's HUD highlighted a new signature descending from above – the bulky silhouette of the War Machine armor, its shoulder-mounted cannons already blazing. Rhodey's arrival was announced by a barrage of missiles that scattered the nearest swarm of drones in a spectacular series of detonations.
"Rhodey!" Tony couldn't keep the relief from his voice, though the urgency of their situation tempered any celebration. "Took you long enough. We've got a situation here—Kryptonian drones, ships with shields, and one hell of a bad day."
"Looks like you're making a mess, Stark," Rhodey quipped, his targeting systems acquiring multiple hostiles simultaneously. The War Machine armor's weapons systems spun up, ready for another salvo. "Let's clean it up."
The drones reacted instantly to the new threat, a dozen breaking the formation to concentrate their attack on Rhodey. Energy beams sliced through the air where he had been moments before, but the War Machine armor's combat protocols were already engaging. Rhodey barrel-rolled through the assault, his heavier frame absorbing hits that would have crippled lighter suits.
"These things don't quit!" Rhodey growled, unleashing a concentrated plasma burst that reduced one drone to vapor. Before he could celebrate the kill, another drone seamlessly filled the gap, its weapons already charging. "Tony, their response time is off the charts!"
"They're networked!" Tony called back, corkscrewing through the air to flank the swarm engaging his friend. "Each one learns from the others. We need to—" He cut off abruptly, diving to avoid a beam that would have taken his head off. "We need to disrupt their collective intelligence. Otherwise, they'll keep adapting faster than we can counter!"
The War Machine armor's heavy boots engaged additional thrusters, pushing Rhodey into a higher position. "Got any bright ideas? Because my ammunition isn't infinite, and these things seem pretty fond of dodge and weave!"
“Only if we can get inside there,” Tony blasted apart another cluster, cursing when more replaced them.
Rhodey’s eyes widened at the response but he refocused immediately, firing an energy blast at the ship, only for it to be repelled by the pulsating shield.
“Yeah, that’s what’s holding us back.”
Above them, the large ship's shields rippled with barely contained energy once again, and it served as a reminder that their drone problem was just the beginning. Diana kept soaring through the chaos, her sword gleaming as it caught the flickering light of distant explosions. A swarm of drones broke away from the main battle, zooming up and converging on her like a metallic tide. Their glowing red eyes zeroed in, and she felt the vibration of their weapons charging.
She dove headfirst into the swarm, her silver blade flashing in a graceful arc that cleaved through two drones instantly. Their shattered remains spun downward, sparks raining like fireworks. A third drone lunged at her with talon-like appendages, but Diana raised her shield, its golden surface deflecting the attack. She countered with a quick thrust of her sword, piercing its core.
One drone managed to graze her side with a burst of energy, the searing heat singing her armor. She gritted her teeth, spinning mid-air to throw her lasso. The golden rope coiled around the offending drone, and with a powerful yank, she slammed it into another, destroying both in a fiery collision.
The drones adjusted their strategy, circling her like predators. Four of them moved in unison, firing coordinated blasts from different angles. Diana shot upward, the beams crisscrossing below her as she flipped over their formation. She raised her sword and came crashing down, splitting one drone clean in half.
Two more lunged from behind, but Diana spun with lightning speed, catching one with her shield and slicing the other mid-dive. "Your technology may be advanced," she said, her voice steady despite the storm of enemies, "but you’re still no match for us."
The city below them was already showing the scars of battle – broken windows, scorched walls, and the endless wail of emergency sirens rising from the streets.
"Until we can figure out a way to get in, we’ve got to keep them down as much as we can. JARVIS, run analytics on their attack patterns. There has to be a weakness in their network protocol. Rhodey, think you can keep them busy for about thirty seconds?"
"Oh sure, no problem," Rhodey's sarcasm crackled through the comms as he unleashed another barrage. "I'll just be here, playing tag with alien death machines. Take your time!"
A flash of red and white caught his attention as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy emerged from between two skyscrapers, their enhanced combat suits gleaming in the chaos. His movements fluid and precise, Peter executed a perfect somersault between two office towers, launching a web grenade mid-flip that detonated in the midst of an approaching drone squadron, the ball of web expanding wide and catching them all in its sticky embrace. Rhodey quickly took aim and fired a powerful energy blast from the cannons on his back, exploding the collection mid-air and watching as chunks of metal rained down satisfactorily on the streets below.
“Nice catch, babe!” Gwen’s voice carried through the battlefield and as Rhodey turned around, he saw her shooting toward a small group of civilians near the edge of a building where a pair of drones seemed to be converging on them. The drones dove toward the fleeing group but were suddenly caught in her webbing. With a powerful yank, she brought them together in a spectacular collision that lit up the sky.
Shaking his head, Rhodey quickly refocused on the task at hand. Those two were more than capable of taking care of themselves, and Tony was busy multitasking—fighting as well as coordinating with JARVIS as they analyzed their enemy’s powers, patterns, and weaknesses.
He kept blasting drones apart, taking chances to fire energy blasts at the ship as well. However, as Tony had said, the drones kept learning and responding with more creative maneuvers that made things harder by the minute. There also seemed no stopping these incoming bastards, and Rhodey had to wonder just where this endless supply of drones was truly coming from.
On the lower levels, Peter and Gwen fought in perfect coordination, using and aiding one another as they either combined their efforts or provided distraction for the other to deliver the killing blow, all the while trying to evacuate any civilians they encountered. However, for every drone they brought down, two more seemed to take their place, their formation growing tighter and their attacks getting more precise.
"We need to keep their attention on us and off the civilians," Peter called out, his voice tense as he twisted away from a beam that carved a smoking groove into the building behind him. "Drones love a moving target—let's give them one!"
"On it!" Gwen's response was accompanied by a graceful launch from her web line. She spun through the air like an acrobat, each twist punctuated by precision web shots that found their marks. Three more drones spiraled out of control, their wings shredded by her accurate fire.
"Kids got style, I'll give them that," Rhodey commented, his cannons providing covering fire as Peter and Gwen continued their aerial dance. "Though I'm starting to feel a little old watching all this gymnastics."
"Focus on staying alive first, feel old later," Tony quipped, his mind still racing through possible solutions to their drone problem. The addition of the spider-powered duo had given them some breathing room, but they needed more than just fancy moves to win this fight. “These bastards are sharing a power source, and we’ve got to take it out.”
“Yeah, but how?” Rhodey asked, blasting apart another cluster of drones.
A massive energy blast from the ship above interrupted their exchange, forcing them all to scatter. Gwen fired two web lines, using them to slingshot herself around a building's corner. "Guys, we've got bigger problems. Those ships up there? They're charging something big!"
"Tell us something we don't know, Spidey girl," Rhodey grunted, his armor's systems straining as he barrel-rolled through another wave of attacks. "Tony, whatever you're planning, might want to speed it up!"
Tony's HUD lit up with warning signals as his sensors detected the growing energy buildup above. "Well, might as well! Parker! Soon-to-be-Parker! Those web grenades of yours, they might help us out here, especially their conductivity."
"You mean channeling electricity through them? ‘Cause yeah, they can do that, and they're insulated from our suits," Gwen confirmed, launching herself higher to get a better view of the battlefield. "What are you thinking?"
"If we time it right..." Tony began, dodging another barrage while running calculations. "Rhodey, remember that trick we pulled in Dubai? The one with the EMP?"
"The one that nearly fried both our suits?" Rhodey's voice carried a mix of understanding and concern. "You're not serious—"
"When am I not serious?" Tony shot back, already adjusting his armor's power distribution. "You two– we need a web net, as big as you can make it. Catch as many drones as possible in one shot. Rhodey and I will handle the rest."
Peter and Gwen shared a quick glance across the battlefield, their masks hiding matching grins. "You heard the man," Peter called out, already swinging wide to get into position. "Ready to show these alien drones why Earth's best defense might just be some sticky string?"
"Born ready," Gwen replied, matching his trajectory. "Just try to keep up!"
They launched into what looked like an aerial ballet, their movements perfectly coordinated as they began weaving an enormous web matrix between the buildings. Peter's web shooters whirred with mechanical precision as he created the foundational structure, while Gwen's rapid-fire shots filled in the gaps, creating an elaborate trap that sparkled in the chaos of battle. Diana joined them in the middle, her lasso holding everything together in the middle until they were ready to weave it all into one firm structure.
"JARVIS, how're those power readings looking?" Tony asked, his armor's systems humming as they prepared for what was coming next.
"Energy signature analysis complete, sir. The drones' shared power network operates on a quantum entanglement principle. Overloading one should create a cascading effect through their neural network."
"Mr. Stark!" Peter called out, flipping over a drone blast while continuing to weave. "Karen's saying the same thing! If we can disrupt their quantum field—"
"—we might just crash their whole system," Tony finished, his mind already calculating the precise voltage needed. "Rhodey, remember to modulate your output to match mine. We don't want to cook ourselves in the process."
"Yeah, because that would be embarrassing," Rhodey muttered, his armor's weapon systems reconfiguring for the electrical discharge. "Ready when you are."
Above them, the web network had become a gleaming masterpiece of engineering and instinct, spanning nearly two city blocks. The drones, seemingly drawn to the massive obstruction in their flight path, began to converge.
"Now!" Tony commanded.
Peter and Gwen moved like lightning, firing impact webs from opposite directions that sent shock waves through their creation. The web matrix vibrated, then suddenly contracted, snapping inward with devastating force. Diana let up at the very end, and the webs snapped together.
Dozens of drones found themselves entangled, their engines whining as they struggled against the unbreakable strands.
"Hit it!" Tony yelled, his arc reactor glowing bright enough to cast shadows on the clouds above. He and Rhodey unleashed twin beams of concentrated electromagnetic energy, their armors' power cores pushing to maximum output. The electricity found the conductive web network and transformed it into a spider's web of lightning.
The trapped drones began to spark and convulse as the power surge ripped through their shared network. Quantum connections became their downfall as the overload cascaded from one to the next in a chain reaction of blue-white energy. Those that weren't caught in the web began to fall from the sky, their neural networks frying in sympathy with their captured brethren.
"Parker! Third building on your left!" Tony called out, spotting one drone that had avoided the worst of the surge. "We need that one intact!"
Peter swung into action, his Iron Spider legs deploying mid-air to give him the extra reach he needed. He snagged the faltering drone with a precision shot, using his enhanced strength to control its descent.
"Got it!" he announced triumphantly, landing on a nearby rooftop with his prize. The drone's surface still crackled with residual energy, its alien tech humming. “You, mister, will give us your secret.”
“Speak less like a maniac, if you can,” Gwen remarked dryly as she landed beside him and whacked his arse, making him jerk.
“Oh? I didn’t hear you complaining back then,” Peter retorted, prompting her to let out a giggle.
“Keep private things private, you two,” Diana called out over comms, and the couple immediately shut up.
"Nice work, everyone," Tony said, landing beside Peter while Rhodey and Diana secured the perimeter. His armor's scanners were already probing the captured drone, analyzing its quantum signature. "JARVIS, start breaking down that power source. If we can crack this, we might just—"
A deafening boom from above cut him off. The ship's shields flared with impossible brightness, and a new sound filled the air – the unmistakable whine of thousands more drones powering up.
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me," Rhodey groaned.
"Mr. Stark?" Peter's voice carried a mix of awe and concern as they watched the sky fill with reinforcements. "Please tell me you're getting something useful from that drone."
Tony's eyes narrowed behind his faceplate as data streamed across his HUD. Meanwhile, the rest of them watched as thousands of new drones emerged from the mothership and began descending in formation.
Peter groaned. “Is it too late to take a rain check? Maybe we reschedule this alien invasion thing for, I dunno, never?”
"Focus, Parker," Tony shot back, his voice clipped but not without a smirk. His faceplate reflected the incoming swarm as he recalibrated his repulsors. "Diana, Rhodey, crowd control. You two, stick close to me and help me keep that drone intact. Obviously, I won’t be firing a bullet while I work, so you’ll need to pick up the slack a bit. I need its power source decrypted in—oh, I don't know—five minutes?"
"Five minutes?" Gwen's voice rose in incredulity. She flipped over a drone that had targeted a nearby bus, webbing its thrusters in one fluid motion. "You want five minutes to do alien science while we’re babysitting the apocalypse? No pressure or anything."
Peter quipped back as he leaped from the rooftop, his Iron Spider legs slashing through two drones in his path. "Relax, Gwen. Think of it like babysitting... if the babies were homicidal AI with laser guns."
"Still not helping," Gwen retorted, twisting mid-air to fire a wide net of impact webs that cocooned a collapsing billboard before it crushed a group of fleeing civilians.
Rhodey, in his War Machine armor, touched down heavily on the street below, his rotary cannons spinning up to carve a protective path through the advancing drones. "Hey, civilians! This way!" he bellowed, firing off flares to draw their attention toward an alley.
One man stumbled, a drone zeroing in on him with a plasma bolt charging. Peter swooped in, catching the civilian just in time. “Heads up, pal! Flying's on me, but tips are appreciated.” He deposited the man safely behind cover, offering a quick thumbs-up.
Gwen landed beside him, panting. “We’ve got to clear this block fast, or these people are toast.”
Rhodey grunted. "Easier said than done. These things are swarming like ants at a picnic." He launched a wrist missile that took out a trio of drones, but more surged in to replace them.
Tony's voice crackled over their comms. "Keep them busy. JARVIS got a workaround cooking."
“Define ‘workaround,’” Rhodey asked impatiently as he blasted another drone.
“Something involving the words ‘highly experimental.’”
“That’s not comforting, Tony.”
“Never is,” Tony replied.
Above, Gwen’s spider-sense blared like a siren. She flipped sideways just as a squad of drones came diving toward her, engines screeching with a new, desperate intensity. "Heads up! Kamikaze mode!" she shouted.
Tony cursed. "They’re trying to overwhelm us. Diana, Rhodey, cover the skies. Spidey couple, you’re with me—stick to the perimeter."
Diana dodged another suicide drone, barely evading its explosion as it crashed into a building facade.
Rhodey shouted, "Less chatting, more shooting!" He activated his shoulder-mounted guns, creating a web of tracer fire that thinned the swarm. Still, the sheer numbers were pushing them back.
Diana worked in tandem with him. She flung the golden rope that snagged a drone mid-dive, yanking it toward Rhodey, who blasted it out of the air. "I feel like we’re playing the world's deadliest game of badminton!" He quipped, making her chuckle.
"Then stop hitting the shuttlecock back to me!" She replied, firing a powerful blast from her bracelet that vaporized another drone before shooting high in the air.
“Well, there she goes again,” Rhodey muttered and quickly followed suit.
The battle raged on, drones humming and getting blasted apart relentlessly, as Peter dropped another cluster. “Please tell me you’ve got something, Mr. Stark!”
“Almost done,” Tony muttered. “We’ve already figured out these things are drawing power from a centralized energy source, and that thing’s perhaps powering up that shield as well. All we need is the best entry point.”
“Couldn’t we have entered from where those drones are coming out?” Gwen asked.
“You think you’d fit in there? You’re free to try. No, there has to be another way in,” Tony retorted. “Come on, JARVIS.”
“The forcefield is impervious to external assault, sir,” JARVIS’ voice came suddenly, just as the drone exploded.
“Well, there goes nothing,” Tony muttered, just as JARVIS continued, “The drone repair hatch could provide an access point, sir.”
“What are you on about?” Tony asked with a frown.
“The debris are being carried back and reassembled in real time, sir,” JARVIS spoke, and everyone’s eyes widened. “The hatch is near the belly of the ship, and based on signal triangulation and energy signatures, it is near the power source.”
“We’ve been so engrossed in destroying these things that their missing debris kept vanishing and we didn’t even notice!?” Gwen exclaimed. “How the hell did it happen?”
“That’s not what we should be thinking about right now,” Tony replied as he shot into the sky.
Frustrated, Diana swung her sword that gleamed as she carved through a cluster of drones, their sparks flaring in bursts of light. She kept a close eye on the broken pieces, and she gritted her teeth in rage when she saw the pieces turn almost transparent before shooting back toward the ship.
High above, Rhodey’s War Machine unleashed heavy fire, explosions lighting up the sky.
"Rhodey," Tony called out, his voice cutting through the comms, "target’s under the big guy’s belly, right where those lovely drone waste is going in through. I’m heading in."
"On it," Rhodey replied, pivoting in mid-air. "I’ll clear a path. Just don’t make me have to scrape you off their hull or catch you mid-fall."
"No promises," Tony quipped, rocketing forward. He opened the channel wider. "Diana, I need a little divine intervention here. This is gonna be tight."
Below, Diana finished off another drone, her shield deflecting a blast that sent a shockwave rippling through the air. She glanced upward at the levitating ship, and then back at Tony. "You’ll have your path. Move fast, Stark."
As Tony darted toward the underbelly of the ship, the lead vessel seemed to sense his intent. Its turrets swiveled, unleashing a barrage of energy blasts. Tony barrel-rolled, narrowly avoiding a direct hit, but his suit’s systems flared red.
"Damn it!" he muttered. "JARVIS, reroute power to shields. If this thing scratches the paint job, I’m sending them the bill."
"Rerouting power," JARVIS confirmed.
The turrets didn’t let up. A cluster of drones broke formation, zeroing in on Tony. Diana, seeing the shift, launched herself into the fray. Her sword arced through the air, slicing through two drones in one swing.
"I’ve got these!" she called, hurling her shield into a third drone before catching it mid-flight. "Get moving!"
Tony weaved through the storm of fire, his repulsors firing in quick bursts to stabilize his path. The deployment hatch was visible now, a small opening glowing faintly with the same energy as the forcefield. But it was heavily guarded—new drones swarmed from the opening, surrounding it like a hive.
"Rhodey, I need you to hit that hatch. Scatter those drones!" Tony barked.
"Copy that," Rhodey replied. A cluster of micro-rockets whooshed out from his suit, streaking toward the hatch. The resulting explosion sent drones spiraling out of control, leaving a brief window.
Tony didn’t hesitate. He accelerated toward the opening, dodging debris and incoming fire. As he neared, a turret’s energy blast grazed his right shoulder, causing his HUD to flicker.
"Shields down to 30%," JARVIS warned.
"Yeah, I noticed!" Tony snapped, gritting his teeth. He angled sharply, slipping into the hatch just as the drones began to regroup.
The change in scenery disoriented him momentarily once he got inside, and he tried to catch his bearings as quickly as he could. He gazed around, his wide eyes taking in the walls that pulsed with a strange, ethereal energy, a blend of machinery and organic alien tech. Suddenly, the core’s location blinked on his HUD, deeper into the ship, and he caught himself.
"I’m in. Keep them busy out there," Tony said, his tone urgent.
"We’ll hold the line," Diana replied, her voice steady despite the mounting battle.
Outside, she and Rhodey continued their relentless assault. Diana’s shield deflected a barrage of blasts, the impact sending her skidding back. With a growl, she slammed her sword into the ground, channeling a shockwave that sent a dozen drones crashing into the earth.
Above, Rhodey unleashed another volley, but the drones were adapting. They began to evade his fire with alarming precision. "Tony, you better hurry! These things keep getting smarter!"
Meanwhile, on the city streets below, Peter and Gwen swung through the chaos, their movements a blur of agility and grace. Gwen winced as a blast grazed her shoulder, the impact spinning her mid-air.
"You okay?" Peter called, launching a web at a drone that had gotten too close.
"I’m fine!" Gwen replied, her voice tight. "Just a scratch. Let’s keep them off the civilians!"
The drones began to hem them in, their shots eerily accurate. Peter shot a web to a nearby lamp post, using the momentum to swing around and kick a drone into another. "Okay, this is getting old. Any ideas?"
"Yeah," Gwen said, gritting her teeth. "Hit harder."
She launched herself upward, spinning acrobatically before slamming into a cluster of drones, her webbing wrapping them together like a cocoon. Peter followed suit, his own webs forming a protective barrier around fleeing civilians below. The buildings in surrounding blocks had all but crumbled, and a few that remained standing were taken care of when those energy blasts hit them. It must be millions in losses, but at least civilian casualties had been prevented so far. At least they hoped it had.
Inside the ship, Tony encountered no resistance as he reached the core. It pulsed with energy, and for a long moment, Tony just gazed at it.
The core was unlike anything Tony had ever seen. It seemed… alive, in a sense. Thick veiny structures were wrapped around it, keeping it contained, and the same veins protruded outward, covering the walls and the floor in a way that oddly reminded him of a grove. It was quite an intricate matrix of alien machinery and glowing conduits.
"JARVIS, how do we shut this thing down?" Tony asked.
"Analyzing..." JARVIS’s voice was calm, but the tension was palpable. "It appears disabling the central node will sever the connection to the drones and collapse the forcefield."
“What about destroying the entire thing?”
“The resource powering up the unit is… unrecognizable, but the energy signatures resemble gamma radiation at the highest level. I would advise against any reckless measures, sir.”
“And destroying one node won’t trigger anything?”
“The synapses are overlapped. Severing one node will divert the power load on another, which would keep the structure stable. However, the central node is keeping command over the drones and it is powering up the machinery that creates and rebuilds them.”
"Which means we’ll only be destroying that function and not the full structure. Fair enough," Tony muttered, his repulsors charging. "Time to pull the plug."
He aimed the right thruster at the indicated nod and just as he got ready to fire, the ship shuddered. He stumbled, barely catching his footing. His HUD blared red, and a massive drone emerged from the shadows, its weapons glowing ominously.
Before Tony could react, the drone fired a powerful energy blast, and it was only thanks to the enhancements he had done to the newest version that he managed to avoid it. However, that pushed him back right where he had entered from, and now he had an alien sentinel standing between him and the plug that needed to be pulled off.
Tony fired a concentrated energy blast at the central node, only for the drone to intercept it with one of its own. The two blasts collided, and a powerful explosion rang out.
"Because it’s never that easy, eh?" Tony sighed, eyeing the bigger-than-normal drone.
It was a hulking beast twice the size of the standard models they had encountered so far, and it bristled with weaponry. Its central eye glowed an ominous crimson, and its limbs moved with unsettling fluidity, almost alive.
"Of course. The bigger, badder boss always shows up when I’m on a deadline," Tony muttered, his HUD locking onto the drone’s weak points. He darted to the left as the drone opened fire, its energy blasts tearing through the walls. The glowing conduits lining the chamber flared, their energy arcs licking the air like lightning.
"JARVIS, tell me you’ve got a way to shut this thing down fast," Tony said, weaving through the barrage of fire.
"Unfortunately, this unit's armor is impervious to standard repulsor blasts," JARVIS replied. "It appears to be shielding the power source. Direct engagement is your only option."
Tony grimaced. "Great. No pressure."
The drone lunged forward, its clawed appendages slashing through the space where Tony had been a split second earlier. He retaliated with a concentrated repulsor blast aimed at one of its joints. The shot struck true, causing the limb to spark and jerk, but the drone hardly faltered.
"Looks like this one’s got a warranty," Tony quipped. He switched tactics, firing a cluster of mini-missiles. The explosions rocked the chamber, but the drone’s central eye remained fixed on him, unyielding.
Outside the ship, Diana braced herself as another wave of drones descended upon her. Her sword flashed in the dim light, cleaving through the mechanical swarm with ruthless efficiency. Rhodey was above her, raining down suppressive fire from War Machine’s arsenal.
"I’m running out of ammo!" Rhodey shouted, dodging an energy blast that narrowly missed his left wing. "Tony, hurry it up in there!"
"Stark doesn’t do 'hurry,'" Diana replied, leaping into the air. Her shield deflected an incoming projectile, the impact sending her crashing against whatever remained of a building. She caught a hanging pillar mid-air and swung around, shooting back in the air with her eyes blazing with determination. "But we’ll keep them busy."
Further below, Peter and Gwen swung through the streets, leading another swarm of drones away from the perimeter where SHIELD agents and local law enforcement were keeping things as much under control as they could. Gwen fired a web at a collapsing building façade, pulling it back just in time to save a group of people trapped underneath.
"These things don’t quit!" Peter yelled, flipping mid-air and kicking a drone into the side of a skyscraper. He shot a web line to Gwen, swinging past her. "You sure you’re good?"
"I’ll be better when we finish this," Gwen replied, hurling a web grenade at a cluster of drones. It exploded in a tangle of sticky threads, immobilizing them. "That loudmouth better be pulling off something genius in there."
Back inside the ship, the battle between Tony and the massive drone had escalated. The confined space amplified the intensity as the walls buckled under the onslaught. The drone unleashed a wave of plasma bolts, forcing Tony to duck behind a crumbling pillar. The impact sent shards of alien metal flying, but none escaped the ship, caught in the impenetrable forcefield.
"Watch it, big guy! I don’t want to set off a gamma bomb in here!" Tony shouted, circling around to flank the drone. His HUD mapped out the drone’s movements, searching for an opening.
The drone suddenly released a surge of energy, its eye glowing brighter as it fired a sustained beam. Tony rocketed upward, the beam slicing through the pillar he’d been hiding behind. The structure toppled but hovered mid-air, caught by the ship’s internal forcefield.
The sight was as comical as it was terrifying. The forcefield protected the ship from external attacks, but it could do nothing against internal impacts. Massive chunks of the ship’s exterior had either broken off or crushed, and yet nothing fell apart, all held in place by the forcefield.
"JARVIS, this thing's running on overdrive. Any bright ideas?" Tony said, firing a precision shot at the drone’s exposed vent. The hit caused it to stagger briefly.
"The core powering this unit is directly linked to the central power source," JARVIS replied. "Disabling it without destabilizing the reactor will require extreme precision."
"Yeah, no pressure," Tony said. He darted forward, his armor’s servos whining as he delivered a powerful punch to the drone’s central chassis. The impact sent the machine sliding backward, its claws scraping deep gashes into the floor.
The drone retaliated by swinging a massive arm. Tony barely dodged, the blow instead smashing into a control console. The resulting explosion lit up the room, and the walls groaned under the strain. More debris floated upward, trapped by the forcefield, adding even more chaos into the mix.
"Okay, new plan: brute force with finesse," Tony muttered. He activated his unibeam, charging it to maximum power. The drone charged as well, its limbs glowing with energy. At the last moment, Tony fired the beam, hitting the drone’s arm and severing it. The severed limb spun into a wall, leaving a deep, smoking crater.
The drone, now missing one arm, adapted quickly, unleashing a barrage of smaller drones from compartments in its body. Tony swore under his breath as the swarm surrounded him, their energy blasts hammering his shields.
"Shields down to 15%," JARVIS warned.
"Yeah, thanks for the update!" Tony barked, releasing a burst of sonic pulses. The smaller drones faltered, giving him just enough space to maneuver. He fired a concentrated shot at the main drone’s central eye. The blast struck true, shattering the lens and causing the machine to convulse violently.
"Core destabilizing," JARVIS warned.
"Perfect," Tony muttered. The drone collapsed in a heap of sparking metal, its systems failing, and Tony watched as it was slowly absorbed back into those root-like tendrils that covered the entire floor and walls. He turned toward the power source, his HUD highlighting its fragile structure. "Time to finish the job."
Outside, Diana fought with renewed fury, deflecting blasts with her shield while her sword cleaved through another wave of drones. Rhodey’s ammo was running dangerously low, but he managed to down a particularly large drone that had been coordinating the swarm.
"We’ve got more incoming!" Rhodey shouted as another cluster of drones poured out from the ship’s deployment hatch.
"Not for long," Diana said, throwing her shield with incredible force. It sliced through the drones in a wide arc before returning to her hand. She glanced up at the ship, her brow furrowing. "Stark better be finishing this soon."
Right on cue, the ship shuddered violently, the forcefield flickering as the power source began to destabilize. Everyone turned to see chunks fall off the main ship along with thousands of drones, slamming against the destroyed city and sending even more explosions raining down. Barely a second later, the forcefield surged once again, wrapping around a destroyed ship that hovered ominously in the air.
Tony hovered near Rhodey and Diana, breathing heavily. The state of his armor showed its 15% capacity. Exhaling loudly, he asked, “What next?”
“I think we’re gonna see soon,” Diana muttered.
From within the depths of the ship, a deep, resonant hum echoed, and Tony sighed. Nothing else could be a better sign that something far worse was about to emerge.
Rhodey hovered beside Tony, his armor scorched but operational. "Please tell me you’ve got a plan for whatever’s next."
Unfortunately, even the great Tony Stark did not have a confident response to that. All he could do was barely hover high in the air as the hum emanating from the ship kept deepening.
