Author Corner: 5-22-2022

This week has been one of interesting and enlightening ups and downs.

On Tuesday, nineteen of you joined my patreon, the highest amount in a day I've ever had. And it was so exciting. Chapter 117 I think is one of the best chapters I've written and it was awesome to see how much people were excited by it.

Then the next two chapters dropped and I really didn't like them when I looked them over again, so I did something I'd never done before and edited both chapters 118 and 119 after publishing them for free, making some relatively minor changes in the grand scheme of things, but changes which made the introduction of the character of Diana a lot closer to what I wanted.

Character interactions and relationship subtlety, which all three of these chapters are filled with, are things which don't come natural to me and thus require a lot more work. 117 went through about 3-4 edit passes to get where it was, while 118 and 119 were both written in somewhat of a rush as I had to delete over 4000 words I'd written to happen after chapter 117 when I realized the way I was making Diana too antagonistic to Mila to allow for the relationship I wanted between the two characters. This then resulted in 118 and 119 only getting one true edit pass and that wasn't enough.

As a result, this week I decided on a new editing strategy. For every chapter I published this week, I edited it once, then took a twenty minute break, and read through it again more like a reader to make sure I hadn't introduced new issues with my edits. This made the editing take about a third longer, but I think it was worth it to try and maintain quality I can be proud of.

And I like learning these things about myself and my writing process.
