DAY 81
A few days after the beginning of the new hormonal treatment, Suzanne was finally feeling better. The weird symptoms she had been experiencing were much milder now. She was being able to sleep again, and the pain in her body had virtually disappeared.
It didn't mean she was in a good emotional state, though. The woman was still having a hard time dealing with everything that was going on. Her body had been radically changed, she looked twenty years older, and everyone continued to act as if she had always been that person.
She had even found in her bedroom new documents that stated that she really was Suzanne Marie Mason, a forty-seven years old British woman. Her old documents were nowhere to be seen, and while she was thinking about it she realized that she hadn't seen them for a long time now. It was as if all the traces of her past were being erased, which was also very scary.
To calm down a bit, Suzanne needed to focus on the thought that all this was just a temporary situation, and it would be worth it at the end. She was almost there... She could feel it. She just needed a little more perseverance.
Her meetings with Mrs. Larsen were also helping a lot. Suzanne still fully trusted the older woman, and although she could no longer say everything she was feeling during the sessions, just the presence of the therapist could make her feel better.
"I know you're facing a moment of transition in your life, Suzanne" Mrs. Larsen said one night. "But I'm sure you'll be okay."
"How can you be so sure of that, Theresa?" Suzanne asked, now completely comfortable calling the therapist by her first name.
"Well, that's because you finally are in control of your life. Now that your husband is dead, you're the one making the decisions, and I’m aware of how important this is to someone like you."
"You know, Theresa, sometimes I don't know who I really am… Can you understand that? It's like I'm living someone else's life..."
Suzanne's real purpose in saying that was to vent about her difficulty in accepting her new reality, and she knew that this was the only possible approach. She wanted a word of comfort, even if it was through some kind of encrypted message. She desperately needed to hear something that gave her motivation…
"I think the reason for this is very simple, my darling. Like I said, you've always been controlled by someone else, but deep down you know you have potential for more than that. And now you can find your true self… To be the person you know you can be… And when you accomplish it, that feeling will go away…"
Suzanne got amazed with that answer. Just then, she realized that she and Patrick had more in common than she had thought. Both of them felt repressed, and believed they could do a lot more. Suzanne had been dominated by her father and then her husband, while Patrick had had his potential limited by Ronald McFarland, his father-in-law and boss.
This realization made Suzanne feel more at ease in her new persona. She could understand the woman she was now, and sympathize with her feelings. And more importantly, she was even more certain that in order for her to achieve her goals as Patrick in the future, she would need to first embrace her new character deeply. That was inevitable, and she needed to accept it.
I'm Suzanne, she told herself. And at this moment, I wouldn't wish to be anyone else. I'm Suzanne and I'm finding my true self...
Once again, she was delighted at how wonderful Mrs. Larsen was. No one could understand her as well as that woman. And since they were already addressing it, she thought that she maybe should seek help for her other internal conflict…
"There's something else, Theresa..."
"Go ahead, my dear. Remember that I'm here to help you."
"Sometimes I also think I’ve wasted too much time… That maybe I'm too old for such sudden changes… It's strange, you know, but it’s hard to believe that I’m a forty-seven years old woman."
"Life goes fast, doesn't it?" Mrs. Larsen smiled. "But you must try not to worry so much about that. Your age shouldn't be a limiting factor in your life, and being middle-aged may be more advantageous than you think."
"How exactly?"
"Well, right now you'll no longer be seen as an insecure young woman, and people around you will respect you much more. They will pay attention to what you have to say, and it will boost your confidence. Nobody is going to tell you that you are too young to do whatever you want. You are at the right age to accomplish great deeds."
Suzanne liked it too. As Patrick, in the past, she had always heard that she was too young and that she had to be patience to get where she wanted. But I guess it can be different now, she thought, happy.
"Not to mention the fact that you still look fabulous" Theresa continued. "Especially after the procedures performed by Dr. Reid."
"Well, I also have to admit that I haven't been feeling very confident about my image lately either."
"Why don't we try to solve this issue? Just relax, my dear. Focus on my voice and forget all your worries... I'm here to help you..."
