March Patreon Reward - Nurikabe Puzzle Pack

Hello Patreons, and thank you for supporting us!

We are delighted to bring you another sudoku hunt constructed by Blobz, who earlier brought us The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

This one is based on Nurikabe, the Japanese pencil puzzle involving islands surrounded by water - Blobz was inspired after watching us stream the Nurikabe World game.

We are so grateful to Blobz himself, and his testers (Panthera, Timotab, Randall, and Scott_garner), for doing the work to create this wonderful pack. One note that applies throughout the pack: islands can touch diagonally.

Enjoy yourself with the 10 puzzles necessary to send in the solution code, at https://tinyurl.com/nurikabesudoku  before 4pm UK time on March 20th, 2025. Then you can move on to the two bonus puzzles at the end of the pack!

@Wilesfiles, I had the same issue. May be reconsider assumptions about box 8.

Nikolai

I completed it but I found it really tough. There were a couple of times where I restarted the puzzle just to clear my head as I thought maybe I'd made a mistake. I'd also find a step forward and then second guess my logic. Apparently, I did it in 35 minutes but I find that hard to believe.

Adrian Stubbs

Awesome set of puzzles, I was sad to finish them

Grace Sansone

Is it with the 1s & 2s? If so check the whisper requirements for C4R4 :)

Grace Sansone

Did anyone else run into a uniqueness issue in Whispering Nurikabe? The checkers says everything is correct, but columns 1 and 3 are at a stalemate for me.

Shannon Kranich

If anyone else got stuck on Nurikabe Corners like me - The diagonally opposite digits rule on white dots applies to waterway cells as well as to island cells, somehow I'd convinced myself it was only island cells.

Altnabreac

Really nice pack, but I'm stuck on number 10. I can't get the Nurikabe part to work out.

Wilesfiles

Also I appreciate how you separated the rules into the constant part and the variable part, some of the previous sets had a problem with subtle rule changes and this is a good example how it should be done. Maybe you also could increase the font size in the pdf so it's easier to read on mobile screens.

Vedran Kordić

Nice pack. The several first puzzles have easy and fast nurikabe and then are just a lot of sudoku, which I didn't like; but halfway through the pack they improve a lot and all the rules interact a lot more. I guess I like nurikabe a lot more than sudoku. :)

Vedran Kordić

Thank you guys! Just finished the puzzle.

Kees

That is correct, all of the digits in the island will form a consecutive set, in any order! edit to say: that one gave me the most trouble too, for some reason!! Just finished it!

Chandler Guptill

Yes, for an island of 4: possible sets 1234 2345 3456 4567- but in any order. The 4 has to be in it, since its the circled cell. For the 7+8 islands, there are quite a lot of numbers that have to be on the island.

Ben Turmes

I managed to solve all the puzzles except for the Renban Nurikabe. That one is driving me nuts! :) I want to make sure that I interpret the rules correctly. It says that every island contains a set of consecutive digits. I read it that every island consists of a set of consecutive digits. In other words, an island of 4 needs the digits 1,2,3,4 or 2,3,4,5 etc. It is not enough that the island contains a set of, for instance ,1,2,3 and a 7 or so. I am almost sure that I know the answer but my despair needs conformation. :D

Kees

A weird quirk of Patreon is that it does not show the attachments on the main page, only once you click into the post. It can be a bit confusing for small posts that are all about an attachment.

Matthew Buckley

I did the same mistake, and could not figure it out even after reading the rules again more than once. Thank you Richard. ... By the way, another thing that ALWAYS confuses me is a given digit that is not inside a circle. I assume it is, and immediately colour it as it an island.

Paolo De Leva

Thanks, Frank! I've completed a few and a bit later on there's some rules stating they can't, so from this you can imply they can where this rule isn't stated. This did remind me of teachers telling you to read the whole exam paper before starting...

Lorraine Blanks

Ah yeah thank you for that! Will make sure to read all the rules for future ones!

Francesca Booer

Ah, now I see it's covered in the first puzzle walkthrough!!

Kim Wheeler

Thanks! I could see that all islands must have one circle, but nothing saying that all circles must be on an island.

Kim Wheeler

As per the rules: every Island contains a single circled cell; from that, yes, you can assume all circles are island cells

Frank Op het Veld

Remember all water must be orthogonally connected...

Richard McDowell

Is it correct to assume that all circled cells are island cells?

Kim Wheeler

We managed to solve Nurikabe Archipelago number-wise, but couldn’t get the colouring for the 1 and 2 in box 4. Did anyone else find the same?

Francesca Booer

I have found that yes, digits can repeat on islands. Enjoy!

Frank Op het Veld

Does anyone know if we are able to repeat digits on islands?

Lorraine Blanks

Like Tamar Holdren said, but you can also click on the title and it'll take you to the post-that's-not-part-of-a-list template, and that'll have the attached files linked.

Jonathan Card

If you can not see the link, be sure to click the cracking the cryptic link under memberships. Then look at this post again for it.

Tamara Holdren

They're linked in the attached PDF (above).

Kappatechy

Where are the puzzles??
