February Patreon reward - "Are You My Mamma?"
Added 2025-02-01 16:00:17 +0000 UTCHello Patreons!
Thank you so much for supporting the channel! As February's reward, we are bringing you "Are You My Mamma?", a collection of sudoku puzzles based on Number Sums, a technique explained in the pack. Each puzzle, when correctly solved, creates a picture, but be warned: some clues in the puzzles are not telling the truth!
PLEASE NOTE: In this pack -
A true clue has all its cells shaded; a clue with all its cells shaded is true. A digit in the bottom right-hand corner of a cell appears as the cell's digits if the cell is shaded; it does not appear as the cell's digit if the cell is not shaded. The 'clues outside the grid' that are always true are the coloured clues.
Here's how to send in your results to Simon and Mark. The answer will be given in the congratulations messages of the puzzles. If you missed the message in any puzzle, just delete a digit and put it back in! You must write your answer as 2 words and send it to https://tinyurl.com/AreYouMyMammaa by 4PM UK time on 20th Feb.
We would like to send so much gratitude to Panthera, theasylm, Alithanna, Jaleb and Clocksmith (the incredible illustrator) for creating this pack, and Casey Coutreau for testing ...
Good luck!
Simon & Mark

My first finished sudoku hunt. It was just accessible enough (I had to restart a few puzzle in the second half). I was able to guess the answer before finishing the puzzles (because I was the correct kind of non-native speaker), but i still pushed through to get all the puzzle, and was finally able too. I really loved the puzzles. Thanks Paint by number institute again. And thanks Sven for those little red digits (next time, i'll try without it).

2025-02-18 12:47:59 +0000 UTCI hope you got it sorted out for Buzzing Along. I finally got to it and worked through the puzzle. The rules are definitely saying that a clue is either entirely shaded or entirely unshaded. If shaded, though, it could be a mix of colors. And FWIW, I had a couple of fails and restarts before getting it to solve.

2025-02-17 20:35:05 +0000 UTCOh, thank you so much. Apparently I was so excited about solving the final puzzle and I did not pay enough attention.
Stefan Nardini
2025-02-16 21:31:44 +0000 UTCThe final puzzle gave you the final letter, and directly instructed you how to get the final answer.

2025-02-16 19:14:47 +0000 UTCI enjoyed the puzzles a lot (though I only realized with the last puzzle that the coloring created pictures on the grid 🙈). This being said, I will probably not be able to participate in the competition. Although I got all the letters, as a non-native speaker I find lt quite difficult to get the correct answer without any other clues. This leaves me a bit frustrated as I put some effort into solving the puzzles in time.
Stefan Nardini
2025-02-16 11:40:32 +0000 UTCWow! What a set of sudoku. I am new to Patreon and wasn’t going to join as I didn’t feel like I was good at solving, however, I’m beyond glad I did. I hope you all are enjoying/enjoyed the pack as much as I have!

2025-02-15 23:53:55 +0000 UTCI have the same problem - Safari can't connect to sudokupad. Luckily I had finished this set and sent in the answer but can't open any of the S's on the You Tube channel.
Laurinda Brown
2025-02-15 12:48:11 +0000 UTCI hope it's fixed soon, it's the first time I've ever had enough spare time to actually sit and give the monthly puzzles a go, it would be a shame to do all but one of them
billy mann
2025-02-15 12:28:06 +0000 UTCYes. Finished puzzle 9 yesterday. Today, I can't open puzzle 10 or any I've previously solved. It says that Sudokupad's DNS address can't be found
Leigh Edworthy
2025-02-15 12:04:34 +0000 UTCIs anybody else having trouble opening any of the puzzles? I was doing puzzle ten yesterday with no problems and today none of them will open

2025-02-15 09:52:41 +0000 UTCIs sudokupad working

2025-02-15 08:50:16 +0000 UTCThanks Tyler!

2025-02-14 23:00:03 +0000 UTCPuzzle 9- buzzing along. Do the rules about shading and unshading cells indicate that if one cell of a clue is unshaded, the entire thing is unshaded, and therefore false. It seems to suggest this way, but doing so has led me the wrong direction multiple times.
Tyler Stauss
2025-02-14 17:54:27 +0000 UTCIt’s is different for every puzzle. Read carefully
Tyler Stauss
2025-02-14 17:52:01 +0000 UTCI think I understand the use of the word "clue" in instructions to mean all the "things" (outside sums, lying clues, renbans, kropkis, etc). So that would mean renbans for example are all or nothing.
Mark Skosich
2025-02-13 21:17:13 +0000 UTCIf part of a grid clue (renban, kropki, etc) is definitely shaded , do we then conclude the entire thing is shaded? Same question for unshaded. I so far have been assuming each thing could be a mix (even though mix means lying).
Mark Skosich
2025-02-13 20:43:41 +0000 UTCThere is also a setting in SudokuPad to give the numbers an "outline" coloring that brightens them up considerably when using black cell color
Mark Skosich
2025-02-13 20:40:21 +0000 UTCNo.

2025-02-13 14:53:51 +0000 UTCCan a shaded cell be shaded two colours? 🤔🤔

2025-02-13 10:05:35 +0000 UTCLovely and cute pack, just finished it! Thanks very much!

2025-02-13 01:18:46 +0000 UTCGot it now, thanks!

2025-02-12 19:41:44 +0000 UTCThere is a pdf attached to the post you replied to, below the text "Simon & Mark". It's hard to miss so probably the web site didn't work properly for you. Try refreshing the page, using a different browser, opening a private window.

2025-02-12 19:06:23 +0000 UTCHi, I just signed up as a Patron and I can't figure out how to actually start the puzzles. Do I need to be on the Discord server?
William Hummel
2025-02-12 04:46:30 +0000 UTCIf you go in the settings, you can enable a white border on the digits, makes them infinitely easier to see on black. Edit: its called "outline on elements" under "visual" section
Andrei Fierbinteanu
2025-02-11 20:37:08 +0000 UTCI think just split after the last instruction. I googled the two word result and got results for the phrase, so I sent that in.
Robert Gendron
2025-02-10 12:05:45 +0000 UTCI'm also still confused - are we meant to scramble even after following the instructions in the last puzzle? Because I got two words but it's not an intelligible phrase or anything remotely close to what I've heard on CTC.
Whale
2025-02-10 08:20:11 +0000 UTCYou made the same mistake as me. After 10 puzzles I forgot that there are Lying Clues. I don't know why but I was banging my head on that because of it.
Adrian Stubbs
2025-02-10 07:10:32 +0000 UTCI've heard them both say it I think, but more frequently by Mark.
Adrian Stubbs
2025-02-10 07:08:22 +0000 UTCLove that! It’s an amazing Easter egg for someone like me solving later than others but also checking these comments!❤️

2025-02-09 16:09:38 +0000 UTCIs the PDF broken?
Ryan Free
2025-02-07 16:33:37 +0000 UTCIt's the puzzle Mark solved in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa2OFF7-qNE

2025-02-06 23:40:15 +0000 UTCBrilliant pack! Thank you!

2025-02-06 17:38:42 +0000 UTCWe later changed that to a confused bee who thinks he is an elephant
Panthera Cheshire
2025-02-06 13:05:03 +0000 UTCIt's something more often said by Mark than Simon, but Simon has said it in videos too
Panthera Cheshire
2025-02-06 13:03:07 +0000 UTCWhen solving, use grey for black, then switch it when the puzzle is finished
Panthera Cheshire
2025-02-06 13:01:59 +0000 UTCThank you! I must have missed that one.
A.W.
2025-02-06 00:11:27 +0000 UTCNevermind I read the rules more carefully and realized what it was saying
Ian Wallace-Moyer
2025-02-05 22:11:10 +0000 UTCI had this same question and wondered what was happening there
Ian Wallace-Moyer
2025-02-05 22:08:23 +0000 UTCMark solved this in his 1 Feb video so you can get the link there :) be warned - it's harder than the puzzles in the pack!
Nathan Playle
2025-02-05 18:55:53 +0000 UTCNot really bad manners, but all puzzles can (and should?) be solved with only the rules mentioned by the authors. ;-)
Ben Turmes
2025-02-05 13:32:34 +0000 UTCAlso, note to Mark and Simon, in the solution videos. If you have kids, you are under legal obligation to do the animal noises. If Vimes can do it, so can you.
Sébastien lecoq
2025-02-05 08:11:18 +0000 UTCI really need to ask. For a friend... Is it considered bad manner to use what you assume of the picture to help with the solving ?
Sébastien lecoq
2025-02-05 07:32:47 +0000 UTCThe technique I have used is to use the dark gray for the black. You end up with the picture with a similar look, but the numbers are easier to read. I think there may have only been one puzzle where it had dark gray and black together .. and then one of the colors was so minimal, I substituted a color.
Tamara Holdren
2025-02-04 15:27:17 +0000 UTCSame question, I did all the puzzles and submitted answer but nowhere was there a button for a bonus?
Esther
2025-02-04 08:45:14 +0000 UTCWhen Simon shows the solve counts in his videos, there is a bonus puzzle called “No Petting!” listed with 1,000+ solves. Where do I find that? I didn’t see anything in the puzzle pack that mentioned it.
A.W.
2025-02-04 03:58:57 +0000 UTCFrom the notes here I went back to the last solution, but still don't get two words. Perhaps next time.
Gerald Collins
2025-02-04 01:33:21 +0000 UTCThis time only a third of the puzzles contain black colouring; this is a big improvement compared to the previous colouring puzzle set where almost every puzzle had black, so thank you. Of course, I would appreciate more if none of the puzzles had black, because sudokupad has dark blue digits which are very hard to see on dark background. There are other tools like Penpa which allow solvers to change digit colour.
Vedran Kordić
2025-02-04 01:28:27 +0000 UTCI finished last night. And like some others here I have a problem with the final answer. I get noise and one word. I entered what I had. Guess I got it wrong. Ah well.
Gerald Collins
2025-02-04 01:26:23 +0000 UTCThe font has ambiguity. You might be misinterpreting one of the letters.
Tim Hodson
2025-02-03 23:34:59 +0000 UTCAh... thanks, guess I was being dense :) (It's Monday, so I'm allowed!)
Brian Pietsch
2025-02-03 18:48:48 +0000 UTCIt's tricky. You need to look at the post from the "Cracking the Cryptic" memberships on the left sidebar in Patreon. The link doesn;t show up in the normal Home feed with all your memberships. But here it is: https://www.patreon.com/file?h=121168418&m=414461509
David Yingling
2025-02-03 18:47:46 +0000 UTCI may just be being dense here, but where the link to the puzzles?
Brian Pietsch
2025-02-03 18:23:59 +0000 UTCThanks for this new variant. Fun pack to solve. Easy to make a mistake here and there. Concentration is key.
Mario
2025-02-03 08:40:53 +0000 UTCThat was fun, went faster by than a day in Lake Town. Non-spoiler hints: Make absolutely sure to read the rules to the end for each puzzle. The rules for coloring the clues change from puzzle to puzzle! And if you’re stuck, remember: It’s still Sudoku. ;-)
Christian Studer
2025-02-03 05:38:16 +0000 UTCMark uses them more often than Simon.

2025-02-02 23:12:14 +0000 UTCIt is definitely something that Mark would say :-)

2025-02-02 22:39:23 +0000 UTCYes.

2025-02-02 20:50:31 +0000 UTCThanks, I read the letter only and missed the instruction there, still never remember hearing those words said in the videos
Robert Gendron
2025-02-02 20:41:44 +0000 UTCRead all of the last congratulation message. I tried to scramble the letters too first but when I read the message again it got a bit easier :-)
Nikamar
2025-02-02 18:57:41 +0000 UTCAm I missing something on the solution phrase? The last 5 characters form a word, but the first 6 are nonsense. I don't see any two words descrambled from the 11 characters that jump out at me as something commonly heard on the channel.
Robert Gendron
2025-02-02 18:29:16 +0000 UTCIs the solution words something that Mark says often? I only watch Simon's videos and I've never heard him say it?
Nikamar
2025-02-02 17:32:16 +0000 UTCYes, took me far too long to figure that out. I don't think it's explicit in the rules? Probably should be.
Erik Hesselink
2025-02-02 16:43:27 +0000 UTCThe order of the colors inside the grid do not necessarily correspond to the order outside the grid
Lisa Mattson
2025-02-02 15:58:04 +0000 UTCAnyone knows if colors appear in the grid in the same order as outside the grid?
Spyros Soldatos
2025-02-02 15:20:18 +0000 UTCYes…but the rules imply that the whole zipper line must be shaded, conflicting with the 39u clue for column 5
B.C. Gio
2025-02-02 12:03:12 +0000 UTCClue in row 9 should be correct. Note that you can use check-sum logic. The orange row totals should have the same sum as the orange column totals
Trevor Tao
2025-02-02 10:36:15 +0000 UTCAm I wrong in thinking the clue in row 9 is not correct - I got the solution…but it is clearly not a zipper line when assuming the outside colors are true?
B.C. Gio
2025-02-02 10:33:32 +0000 UTCYes, exactly
Dragonja
2025-02-02 09:34:12 +0000 UTCBuzzing along - “I’m sorry, I’m not your mamma said the elephant” is the winning message. Uuummmm I think your having an identity crisis of you own, aren’t you a bee? The story confirms - bee. Colour coding suggests probably not elephant.
sara c
2025-02-02 07:13:18 +0000 UTCTook me way too long to discover a fun fact: the last puzzle is broken if you use Renban instead of Zipper Line :-O
Trevor Tao
2025-02-02 06:19:24 +0000 UTCIf there is no number sum clue of a given color (let's say red) outside a row or column, does that guarantee that no cells in that row/column are shaded red?
Cooper Leher
2025-02-02 05:29:50 +0000 UTCI was supposed to do something this afternoon…that didn’t happen…through 9 of the puzzles…this rule set is fun to think around!
B.C. Gio
2025-02-01 23:12:35 +0000 UTCThe first two have opened normally for me.
Brandon
2025-02-01 21:21:25 +0000 UTCIt does not open in the sudokupad in the normal way from the link, but there is a workaround by copying the link and using the import functionality.
