Another Language: Best Video Solution

We get some amazing entries to our competitions but this video solution from Matt Bouyack was, we thought, outstanding.  We're very grateful that Matt has agreed we can share it with you and we certainly recommend it if symmetry and its effects on sudoku are still something of a mystery.

Please remember to drop a comment on the video if you enjoy it.

Well done, Matt! It’s really a video for everyone, beautifully explained

This was great, do we get to read Piatato's / Trevor's anywhere :)

I saved away that list of valid transformations for future use. The explanation of what one can and can't do with relabeling was also valuable. Thank you, Matt. I hope you get a nice prize, or maybe even a piece of cake.

Happy to have the same ideas as Matt, but his explanation is in another division. well done!

that's right, it does assume uniqueness.

100%. The winning video solution does a really good job of introducing more advanced symmetry (including one form I didn’t know about), and showing how it applies to the solve. Very deserving win. Ewen

Sooo ... Symmetry ... doesn't it rely on there being a unique solution? I mean you're saying if there is symmetry and theres just one solution then the solution must obey the symmetry and therefore we can use it to solve ... Which is all well and good BUT you're thereby giving up Simon's idea that you can't use uniqueness to prove to yourself that there is a unique solution you're finding. So whenever you're using symmetry, you're limiting yourself to finding the symmetric solution, but you don't prove that there isn't an asymetric solution.

If anyone is unclear on how symmetry works, this is the video to watch. Matt does a stellar job of making a difficult topic clear.
