Have you seen "The House That Jack Built" Psychological horror from 2018, with Matt Dillion..
Directed/wrote by Lars von Trier and Jenle Hallund, Uma Thurman has a brief cameo as well..
If your into horror, this some pretty disturbing stuff, but clever writing for analyzing..

The rabbit hole to Martyrs, if you wanted to explore, would be the New French Extremity films.

lol wow, this film is part of the banned film list. I'm actually surprised you watched something like this. theres more but dont go down the rabbit hole. Trauma, the Girl next door, I spit on your grave, the Green inferno are dark mentions.

This movie is I Spit on Your Grave-ish meets Terrifier-lite. That's the best way I could sum it up, shock value with a message. Y'all be requesting Terrifier for Halloween but idk after this lmfao.

So.... LOL Ive never seen this movie before. What a wild ride and just.. fascinating (in a weird sense) concept. The main part that truly annoyed me was when she found the hidden area in the cabinet and STILL DIDNT CALL THE COPS?! My goodness, I wanted to scream at the screen lol
I feel like BJ was more freaked out than Asia! hahah The expressions on his face throughout were priceless. Oof.. Im a horror fanatic and felt this one was heavier and more shocking than Terrifier (I dont recommend if gore is a no no)

Director Pascal Laugier uses a unique visual style and pacing that creates an unsettling atmosphere. The cinematography and sound design add emotional depth, making it more than just a series of gruesome scenes. The film elicits a visceral response that goes beyond mere shock value.
I see where you're coming from, but I believe "Martyrs" is more than just torture porn. The film highlights the isolation that can stem from trauma and suffering, while also exploring the potential for connection through shared experiences of pain. It examines how individuals relate to one another in extreme circumstances and raises questions about faith, belief systems, and the lengths people will go to seek answers about the afterlife.
Additionally, it delves into the boundaries of human resilience and the psychological impact of extreme experiences. The film challenges viewers to consider what lies beyond our physical existence, the nature of consciousness, and the purpose of suffering...whether it can lead to enlightenment or a greater sense of connection to others.
Ultimately, I believe "Martyrs" encourages reflection on deeper truths about the human experience, rather than just relying on shock. That said, your point is well taken.

It's a great, and provocative, choice (thanks VIP) - but this is a sadistic, unserious film. It's trussed up with some pseudo-philosophical baggage, and I've read (and written on) Bataille, but it's an excuse for torture porn.

When Lucy escaped, she left that woman behind to die. One interpretation is that the woman haunting her, is that woman: a hallucination of her guilty conscience, haunting her for that choice. Lucy thought she could alleviate her guilt through revenge. There are so many interpretations of this movie, especially regarding the ending. Great reaction!
