When we see him at the beginning of the movie, he enters the convenient store to test the Asian guy at the counter-- presenting him with a lottery ticket. The Asian guy fails his test by dismissing him and not even checking the ticket, but Jack Campbell intervenes, and does something completely unexpected which impresses the angel. When the angel finds out that Jack thinks he has a perfect life, he decides to give Jack a "glimpse" of how much richer his life could be.
