I left the clothes descriptions as placeholders because I am awful at describing clothes and even worse at imagining them.

I also needed to do some research about 12th-century fashion. What came up was really interesting, but since this is a game โ€” a fantasy game, no less โ€” I don't want to hold myself to strict standards regarding clothes, armor, hairstyles, and weapons.

This post will focus on the options for a female Romanus. I'll make a separate post about the male wear.

I've decided to only offer two possible dresses for you to wear at the ball. This is because I want the style you pick to actually matter and for characters to react to each style in different ways. Maybe one makes you more respected amongst the 'proper' nobles, while the other makes it easy to seduce or entice some poor fool out of a key or information.

I know that if I offer more than two choices, I'll be overwhelmed. So, the choice will be between a more "risky" dress and a more conservative one. For the conservative, I researched the actual styles worn in the 12th century, which is more historically accurate (I love the looping belt around the waist).

For the risky dress, I compiled dresses with a more lax, fantasy style โ€” mostly using Game of Thrones because the wardrobe of that show was insane. ๐Ÿ˜‹

The Conservative styles can be as such:

And the fantasy styles can be:

Please vote for your two favorite ones! If there's a particular dress or style you love that isn't represented here, please let me know in the comments! โ™ก

when you said risky my mind went immediately to sideless surcotes. they are a bit more modern, 13th century iirc, but they are historically "revealing" outfits that could've been worn to court. by our modern standards they're not the most flattering but definitely something

Sofรญa

Okay but fantasy 3 was a close second.

Rachel Stone

Voted for conservative#2 and fantasy#2 since they actually have quite a similar style, but the fantasy one being just a tad bit more risque.

Now I absolutely want to see what the most ridiculous thing you could smuggle in would be. On the dancefloor with one of the Theers like "is that a battleaxe or are you just happy to see me?"

bubgkes

As someone who mainly plays a male Romanus it would be really cool if a female MC could sneak a weapon into a high-security noble's ball when a man would definitely be checked.

HeraldOfEras

I voted for fantasy #2, it fits the vibes of the universe more, like ike other people said (+ Alicent my beloved ๐Ÿ˜), but I do love dresses without sleeves, much more practical! (also showing off these arms hehehe). Conservative #2 is my favourite, it's so lovely! Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic is a dream โค๏ธ

Lauriane

Oh! I forgot! There's also old movies - the 1968 "The Lion In Winter" or the 1967 "Camelot." Or Zeffirelli's "Romeo and Juliet"?

A sandwich

Yes, that's the problem xD they used to wear armor everywhere. And thank you!!! I'll check them out โค๏ธ

honestly i love all of these!! and the fact that what we are wearing actually matters :โ€™) conservative #1 isnt so popular, but i wanted to give a shout because its so unique, i find it really interesting!! and i agree that the #2 fantasy outfit feels more connected to the conservative options and therefore doesnt feel like romanus is basically showing up naked in the eyes of nobles. but iโ€™d be pretty happy with any of these

mila (yugocar)

iโ€™m surprised conservative 1 wasnโ€™t more popular! it was tough for me between 1 and 3 (the headpiece for 1 is so pretty). as for the risky iโ€™m such a sucker for an open back so margaeryโ€™s has to be my fav :โ€™)

Senna

Wellllll, I don't want to oversell myself, I just like Arthuriana stuff. Paintings of the Medicis might be kind of close to the more Mediterranean vibe. In the realm of Arthuriana, most of the time when men are featured, they're in armor, which is not helpful. But there's John Duncan's "Tristan and Isolde" or John Everett Millais' "A Huguenot" or "The Crown of Love." But all of that is a little more Celtic-inflected.

Tbh they're all pretty, choosing one is hard but it's either fantasy 1 or fantasy 3 because, well. Boobs. Romanus is hot and that fact deserves to be acknowledged ๐Ÿ˜ญ But really, most authors usually give at least a few options (like 5 or more) and while I don't exactly have any problem with it, I'd honestly take 2 options over 10 any day, if it means there will be some reactivity at least ๐Ÿ‘€

Wrap Wrapowy

Conservative option 2... im obsessed...

Reese

That's the one ๐Ÿฅบ do you have any reference paintings for male attires? You seem to know your art ๐Ÿงก

Anathema

Is it Edmund Blair Leighton's "The Accolade"?

A sandwich

A perfect mix of brains and beauty imo. Perfect woman

Rue

It's that curling smile. She's mesmerizing to watch. She was a great Anne Boleyn in the Tudors as well

Anathema

Omg The Lady Sharlott is one of my favorite paintings!! I can't believe I didn't think to look for inspiration in classic art There's another I love that I don't remember the name. She's knighting a soldier, white dress, flowing hair

Anathema

Margaret Tyrell (and Natalie Dormer) is absolute wife. She's my ultimate crush ๐Ÿ˜

shrek4ever

Absolutely. Natalie Dormer played her excellently. ๐Ÿ˜

Rue

It's gorgeous!!! I'm looking at William Morris' "La Belle Iseult," I'm looking at JWW's "The Lady of Shalott," I'm looking at "The Damsel of the Sanct Grael" by Dante Gabriel Rosseti.

A sandwich

She's one of the few characters I liked more in the show than the books. I blame the actress ๐Ÿ˜‹

Anathema

I LOVE that one as well! It seems option 3 is more popular but I think I'll keep the more lax belt and color scheme of the second

Anathema

Oh no. Margaery Tyrell my beloved! My GOT crush will get my vote every time because her wardrobe is flawless

Rue

Please let me live my Pre-Raphaelite John Williams Waterhouse Arthurian dreams with conservative option 2 ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

A sandwich

3 for conservative because you could hide anything in that cloak, a mercenary is always prepared (and pretty ๐Ÿ˜Œ) 1 for fantasy because I'm biased towards the Tyrells LMAO and would ๐Ÿ˜ everytime I saw Margaery, that family was truly serving the realm โœจ

bubgkes

Fantasy 1 because my Romanus is not getting her huge muscles into any garment with sleeves๐Ÿ˜ญ

river

I think out of all the risquรฉ dresses, #2 (Alicentโ€™s green one) is the only one that looks like it belongs in the same universe as the conservative ones
