New Tutorial Prerelease - After Effects FIRE!!!

Hey everyone,

Hope your month is wrapping us nicely! I’ve got a BUNCH of great new textures that I’m processing and will send out shortly… In the meantime, new tutorial ready to go and I’m excited to share!

We’re back in AE for a new spin on a classic effect… FIRE!!! It’s a pretty flexible setup in After Effects - once you get a feel for the project, it allows you to generate fire out of just about anything. Download the project file for the 4k version!

If you have any trouble downloading the project, it can also be found here:

It’s the one called Texturelabs_FireProject.zip.

Let me know what you think and I hope you enjoy!

More shortly!

Sure thing. For a full 6 minutes, I think it’d probably be best to use some expressions on the keyframes if you’re comfortable with that. Here’s a step by step: 1) In the “MAIN COMP” adjust the Composition>Composition Settings to make it 6 minutes long. 2) Drag all the layers out to be the length of the timeline (the precomp layers, we'll deal with in a sec). 3) Select all the layers and use the U key to expose all keyframes. 4) For each layer with keyframes, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac) the blue stopwatch to create an expression. In the expression field for each keyframed value, type the expression: loopOut("offset") 5) Add this expression for every keyframed value (8 of them in the comp). 6) Open the “Precomp - FRACTAL FLAMES” composition, and adjust it to be 6 seconds long. Select the layer, press U to reveal the keyframes, and use the same expression on the 2 keyframed values here too. 7) Open the “BURN THIS - Precomp” composition, and adjust the comp and the layer to be 6 minutes long. 8) Back in the MAIN COMP, don’t forget to drag out the precomp layers to the full 6 minutes. You should have a 6 minute animation! Let me know if you run into any issues….

how to make it longer than 6" and turn it into a full 6 min video. That would be super helpful

I don't understand the question... I'd like to help if you can give me more details :)

how to 60's?

For sure! There's an updated project file here with an alpha channel version: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18-G9y49uYzOKsWk9LZRX4h6b8Iu2tQcR/view?usp=share_link It basically consists of having two similar comps - one with all the fire effects (which will get composited as Add/Screen mode), then another duplicate comp that only treats the original source object with those first effects - some blur and distorted edges. Check it out and see if it helps! For what it's worth... When I was compositing the sword in the into of the video, it helped to look at some real footage of things burning. The interesting thing is how difficult fire is to expose for in-camera, so the image itself is usually super underexposed in order to pick up the color of the fire...

Any way to get this on an alpha channel?
