Honestly, it feels like more people misunderstand this show, than there are people who hate Mushoku Tensei. They always comment "just don't take it seriously and you can enjoy it", that's bullshit. There are 2 stories going on in this show. Both are enjoyable. The 1st Story is a gag comedy centered around the Main Character. He lives his entire life taking his cringe chunni persona and mob character cover as seriously as one could. Because Shadow/Cid is oblivious to reality, it allows him to maximally perform this roll in his story. His cringe comes so close to the actual plot, because he actively pursues the most chunni thing he can think of based on whatever is in front of him. This works because the premise of this world is a dark fantasy, the basis for a lot of chunni ideas. An example would be in the scene where he names Alpha, he needs to come up with an evil organization. Because Cults are "evil", he calls it a Cult. He also looks to the bottle of Diablos Whiskey, and since it relates back to the hero story he had just mentioned, so he chooses that name. Also, it sounds cool. The Cult had named the whiskey after Diablos, so it comes full circle and Shadow just happens to be right. The 2nd Story is a serious dark fantasy plot that everyone, but Shadow himself, is aware of. Without Shadow, no one would consider the story a comedy. Even with Shadow involved, every other character takes the plot seriously. So, you can too. You don't need to take Shadow/Cid seriously to take the rest of the show and characters seriously. These 2 stories play off each other. Sometimes the serious plot and actions from characters make Shadow/Cid's comedy and performance even better. Also, Shadow/Cid doing his "bit" can make the serious plotline even more enjoyable.
