I know I've certainly felt that way with other shows and stories where the character feels too inaccurate, especially in things like book to movie adaptations. It's frustrating when you know how a character is supposed to be but the writing doesn't meet the standards to show it. That being said, I actually find it more immersion breaking when I discount certain parts of a story in favour of purifying certain characters to their intended attributes. Suddenly, the actions characters take don't make sense because we're ignoring that character A did what they did and so characters B, C, and D are now doing things that feel strange in said story. I can suspend my belief that characters are capable of doing stupid/shitty/horrible things because that's just the human condition and we're all capable of being terrible people despite any good intention or heart we have 🤷♂️ So, not only is it easier to believe Sakura is capable of doing bad things, it's more realistic than removing her bad actions from the story and calling them bad writing and having to feel that gap in the overall series as just something to be excused or dismissed. Doing that just cheapens the story to me. I mean, I understand it's not ideal, but neither is feeling angry about Kishi's shortcomings every time she's on screen - at least not to me. I'd rather enjoy the series as it's been made, with the understanding that it's the canon for the anime (the manga is it's own separate canon) than pick it apart and call things inconsistent and blame that on something I can't control or change. Unfortunately, that means Sakura is kind of shitty person canonically, but that's just how the show was written. Like, I would Love to love Sakura, because we see that other characters still do, but the actions she takes in the show just aren't excusable to me 🤷♂️I'm glad that her friends and her family still love her, but I just don't. I suppose, what I'm trying to say is: Taking her out of the context of the show does make her a better person, yes. But you have to take her out of the show to see that. In the show, she is what we see and that's what I think should be considered.

It is unfortunately still canon that she did these stupid things regardless, I'm not trying to say it's not canon. When you want to determine what a character is truly like in canon, though, you have to use a discerning eye since these are fictional characters rather than real people. If a character is established to have certain positive qualities, then they contradict all of those qualities whenever it was convenient for the story, why would I blame the character at that point rather than Kishimoto for their actions? When a character behaves irrationally, there should be an established reason for it but with Sakura there is no sensical reason given. To accept some of what she has done, we as the audience would have to accept that she switches between competent and incompetent on a dime randomly at certain convenient times. That kind of character writing completely breaks immersion for the observant watcher. The rest of the characters in the show do not treat Sakura like she is incompetent or see her that way, even after witnessing everything she has done. You cannot make an argument for everything that took place to make sense canonically as a whole, so imo it is better narratively to ignore certain things even if they are canon for the purposes of accurate in universe character analysis. This is not normally a necessary for character analysis, but Kishimoto is so garbage at writing certain characters during certain scenes that it is needed for characters to make sense or for their behavior to even be possible without some headcanon mental disorder.

I think the main discrepancy between the opinions on Sakura probably stem from what people consider as her 'canon character' in regards to what we see in the show and what we know is a failing of Kishi's writing. For me, I tend to believe that a character is a character despite the failings of their creator. She may be inconsistent because she is poorly written, but she still does the things she does in the story and that ends up as canon - so she by extension is, unfortunately, a pretty shitty person when you compare her to some of her peers. And yes, that is due to Kishi's failings as a writer but the acts still happen and they still influence the series. This isn't to detract from what you've said, btw. I grew up reading naruto and I most definitely remember how smart and kind Sakura is capable of being and I appreciate how much she mellows out in Boruto quite a bit. It's a big contributor on why I don't hate her like I did back then. But, from my viewpoint of 'what happens is canon despite the failures of writing' her positive attributes still came up short in comparison to some of the things she did or said throughout the series. That's not to take away from your appreciation of her, it's just to say that she hasn't won me over and likely never really will, sadly 😂

2024-08-01 04:36:12 +0000 UTC@DiamonDust I disagree, Sakura was only aware of the rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke, and that Naruto took it hard when Sasuke went rogue with Orochimaru. That's all she knew, that Naruto wanted to save him from Orochimaru's grasp and fulfill his promise to her. She had no clue how close their ties had become and how much they cared for each other. She wasn't there when Sasuke acknowledged Naruto as his best friend, and when Naruto said that Sasuke and Iruka were the closest thing to a family to him. And although Sakura is smart, she's not the most emotionally aware amongst the characters in the show, hell, she always perceived Naruto's love as "just a crush" when he deeply cared for her.

I think it would have happened regardless, he was already breaking down mentally before he talked to her. The part that makes it look like it was to make Naruto look good was with Naruto acting all noble and saying "I personally want to save Sasuke" while making it look like Sakura completely gave up. It made Sakura look mentally weak and Naruto mentally strong, when in reality we should have had more of what we saw early shippuden where they were both committed to supporting each other and saving Sasuke AS A TEAM. It just became the Naruto show after this point when it came to the Sasuke plotline with Sakura and Kakashi relying solely on Naruto to save him. Even Itachi had this weird line where he was like "I'll just leave it to you, Naruto" because he somehow thought his words wouldn't reach Sasuke when he was the one who single handedly brought him back from being a murderous psychopath to a semi reasonable person again. If Sasuke hasn't run into Itachi coincidentally and gotten some closure from talking to him he would likely never have been saved. The world probably would have ended, actually, cause he would have just gone to destroy the village without caring about the kage reviving or becoming involved in the war.

I think she was probably planning on ignoring the one she wanted most (Sasuke), and just faking it with Naruto until she developed real feelings for him. If she never did develop feelings, then Sakura would not stay with Naruto for both of their sakes. Would that have worked? No, probabaly not. Not because I don't think she could develop feelings for him ever, but I think what would happen is Sasuke would be killed without Naruto's intervention for him and then Sakura would just be traumatized by the whole thing and wouldn't be able to wash away feelings of guilt toward Sasuke's death and deceiving Naruto partially. The relationship built on such a shaky and traumatic foundation would crumble inevitably - or rather Sakura herself would crumble unable to ever forgive herself for letting the one she loved most (romantically) die. Either that or she would just drop the charade once Sasuke dies, which is horrible 💀. I hope Kishimoto is not this demonic to write her to be practically evil. You can justify what she did morally by saying she was forcing HERSELF to give up on Sasuke and choose Naruto as her partner for his sake and lying to herself by saying it's also what she wanted for herself.

Sai just gaslit her with that dumb idea and she believed him. Sakura is not dumb, Kishi just loves to throw her under the bus along with other young female characters.

Every bad quality Sakura has ever displayed deviates from established traits she had like intelligence, kindness, and just being an overall badass. The reason you see these contradictory qualities in Sakura is because Kishimoto sucks so bad at writing young women that he will occassionaly just turn them into emotional wrecks, burdens, and plot devices at any given moment for no good reason when it makes no sense for the character to act so incompetent. Part 2 made me like Sakura's character, and I view the dumb crap Kishi makes her occasionally do as separate from her character since they are not in line with her character at all. In Sand Arc and in Boruto you can see a version of Sakura where all that dumb crap is actually not even present at all for the entire arcs and it's amazing. That is who Sakura actually is as a character when she is not made to do 0 IQ things as a plot device by Kishimoto. If you recall Sakura had the highest testing scores of her entire class and was seemingly the only one in chunin exams who didn't have to cheat for the written test. She is stated and shown to be extremely intelligent.

She definitely has some very good qualities in her strength of mind and she definitely mellows out a lot as an adult so I definitely don't hate her anymore. But I absolutely do not like her and never really have either. People can use the excuse that she's a badly written character and I don't completely disagree because it's clear that Kishi is better at fleshing out his male cast. But: putting the writing skill aside, she's just a shitty person when compared to any of her female peers and always has been. It doesn't matter what the reasons were, this manipulation was a new level of shitty - and maybe I feel that way because I have such a high value on honesty but she really couldn't have picked a worse way to try and go about this. It's also something she keeps doing, manipulating Naruto (and others) in the most dehumanizing ways, and it really solidified my genuine dislike of her character. Again, I'm not saying she doesn't have good qualities, because she does. I'm just saying that her good qualities don't make up for her bad ones, in my eyes. Unfortunately, the Sakura debate has been going on for literal generations at this point, but it is what it is. My two cents is that she's a shitty person but still manages to contribute positively despite it, and that a lot of problems probably could have been solved a lot sooner if she hadn't always been so selfish and proud and condescending 🤷♂️

Naruto was risking a war between the Leaf and the Clouds just for a slim chance of convincing Sasuke, who's already committed tons of crimes at this point. She tried to surpress her feelings for Sasuke and go for the safe choice, which is to entertain Naruto's love for her (which she thought was the reason he was so adamant on pursuing Sasuke). She just didn't take into account that Naruto isn't the same he was when he made his promise to Sakura before the Rescue Mission, he cares to save Sasuke from the hatred he holds onto now. He wishes to solve Jiraiya's question on harboring Peace.

It got me curious so I checked out why he wanted it so badly after seeing him around a while and I can understand his hype. If my word means anything, I would definitely recommend watching Power Arc on stream. Yeah it's a filler but it's got probably the best animation in the entire series. Movie level stuff right there and it does have some mixed canon in some parts. And also It's only 6 episodes long so you could finish the little mini arc in one stream if you wanted. It starts on 290 and ends on 295 so we still got a ways away till then but yeah, it's some good stuff mah boi 🔥

Ino is too loud of a character, Hinata is too safe of a character, and Ten Ten is Ten Ten. But I'm mature enough to know that Kishimoto just....didn't feel the same about Sakura because looking back, I can see all that wasted potential with the character. He really wasn't on shit with this character at all. Her flaws make her real but any real growth she could've had was wasted because Kishi doesn't make lasting, practical use of any of her many self-reflection moments beyond a brief moment in the spotlight. And all of his interviews on her proves this.
